Chapter 17: The Choice Vanessa Made

Vanessa sat down.

For the first time since I met her, she looked small.

Not powerful.

Not controlling.

Just broken.

But I couldn’t forget what she had done.

Pain didn’t erase cruelty.

“You knew Claire’s letter existed,” I said.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“You knew she knew.””

Still nothing.

Rachel looked at her.

“Tell him.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

“You think telling him changes anything?””

“Yes.””

Rachel’s voice was firm.

“Because Maya deserves the truth.””

Vanessa looked upstairs.

At the room where my daughter slept.

Then she spoke.

“I was pregnant before Claire.””

The room stayed quiet.

“I thought everything was finally going right.””

Her fingers trembled.

“I had a husband. A baby. A future.””

She looked at me.

“Then I lost everything.””

I said nothing.

“Claire got pregnant after me.””

Rachel nodded.

“And you blamed her.””

Vanessa looked away.

“At first, no.””

Her voice became softer.

“I was happy for her.””

A bitter smile appeared.

“Then I saw her holding Maya.””

I felt anger.

“Your grief turned into hatred.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“My grief turned into obsession.””

That honesty surprised me.

She continued.

“I wanted someone to blame.””

“And you chose Claire.””

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Because Claire was the only person who still had the life I lost.””

I stared at her.

“You destroyed an innocent child because you were jealous.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

The admission didn’t comfort me.

It made me angrier.

“Then why?””

She looked up.

“Because when I saw Maya, I saw everything I would never have.””

I stepped closer.

“She was a child.””

“I know.””

“You made a child pay for your pain.””

“I know.””

The room went quiet.

Then Rachel spoke.

“But that’s not the whole truth.””

I looked at her.

“What else?””

Rachel looked at Vanessa.

“The night your baby died wasn’t Claire’s fault.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I know.””

I froze.

“You knew?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I knew.””

“Then why did you spend years blaming her?””

Because she didn’t answer immediately, I understood.

The truth was worse.

“Because it was easier.””

My chest tightened.

“Easier?””

“Yes.””

She wiped her face.

“It was easier to hate Claire than admit I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I left my baby alone.””

Silence.

“I was angry. I had been fighting with my husband. I went to Claire’s house because I wanted someone to understand.””

Her voice shook.

“But Claire was in labor.””

I listened.

“She begged me to call an ambulance.””

My hands clenched.

“And?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I didn’t.””

The words felt like a punch.

“Why?””

“Because I was angry.””

She started crying.

“For five minutes, I walked away.””

Five minutes.

Five minutes that changed everything.

“I thought I would come back.””

She covered her face.

“When I returned, Claire was gone.””

I stared at her.

“And your baby?””

Her voice broke.

“My baby didn’t survive.””

The room was silent.

Then I heard footsteps.

Maya stood at the top of the stairs.

She had heard everything.

My heart dropped.

“Maya…”

She looked at Vanessa.

“You hated me because your baby died?””

Vanessa froze.

“No.””

But Maya shook her head.

“You did.””

Her voice trembled.

“You made me feel like I did something wrong.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

Maya looked away.

“I don’t want your apology.””

Those words hurt.

Because they came from a child who had been forced to become stronger than she should have been.

Maya walked toward me.

I wrapped my arm around her.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

I almost ignored it.

But something told me to answer.

I put it on speaker.

His voice came through.

“Marcus.””

“What?””

“You need to listen carefully.””

I said nothing.

“I found something.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“The custody case was never Vanessa’s idea.””

I looked at Rachel.

Then Vanessa.

“Whose was it?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“It came from someone who has been controlling Vanessa from the beginning.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Daniel whispered:

“Your father.””

May you like

I froze.

Because my father had been dead for three years.
