Chapter 10: The Witness Nobody Knew
For the first time in years, I questioned a memory I thought I could trust.
The night Maya was born.
The night Claire almost died.
The night Vanessa disappeared.
I had always believed the story.
A storm.
A delayed ambulance.
A terrible coincidence.
But now Vanessa had planted a new question in my mind.
Someone else was there.
Someone who knew the truth.
I sat in my car outside my house, staring at the darkness through the windshield.
My phone remained in my hand.
I wanted to call Vanessa back.
I wanted answers.
But I knew her.
Or at least, I thought I knew her.
She never gave answers.
She gave pieces.
Enough to make people doubt.
Enough to make them chase the truth she controlled.
I called Rachel.
She answered immediately.
“Did Vanessa say something?””
I looked at the house.
“Yes.””
“What?””
I swallowed.
“She said someone else was there the night Claire gave birth.””
Rachel went quiet.
Then I heard her whisper:
“Oh no.””
My heart sank.
“You know who?””
“No.””
But her voice told me she was hiding something.
“Rachel.””
A long pause.
“Marcus, there was someone.””
I sat up.
“Who?””
“An old neighbor.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Claire didn’t want anyone involved.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Rachel sighed.
“Her name was Helen.””
I wrote it down.
“Where can I find her?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Marcus…”
“Please.””
Another pause.
Then she gave me an address.
The next morning, I drove to a small house outside town.
The woman who answered the door looked older than I expected.
But her eyes were sharp.
When I said Claire’s name, her face changed.
“I wondered when you would come.””
That sentence made my stomach tighten.
“You knew I would?””
Helen stepped aside.
“Your wife always believed the truth would find you eventually.””
I walked inside.
The house smelled like old books and coffee.
There were photographs everywhere.
Families.
Holidays.
Memories.
Then I saw one picture on the wall.
Claire.
Vanessa.
Helen.
All three together.
“You knew Vanessa too?””
Helen nodded.
“She was different back then.””
“Different how?””
“Angry.””
I looked at her.
“Angry at Claire?””
Helen looked down.
“Angry at the world.””
I sat across from her.
“I need to know what happened that night.””
Helen’s hands tightened around her cup.
“I was outside when I heard Claire screaming.””
My chest tightened.
“She was alone?””
“Yes.””
“Where was Vanessa?””
Helen looked at me.
“That’s the part nobody wanted to believe.””
I leaned forward.
“What did you see?””
Helen took a breath.
“Vanessa was there.””
My heart stopped.
“But she told everyone she wasn’t.””
Helen nodded.
“She arrived before me.””
The room felt smaller.
“What happened?””
Helen looked away.
“Claire was scared.””
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa was angry.””
I clenched my jaw.
“What did she say?””
Helen’s voice became quieter.
“She told Claire that she always got everything.””
I felt sick.
“Even her baby?””
Helen nodded.
“She said Claire didn’t deserve another chance at happiness.””
I closed my eyes.
Ten years.
Ten years my daughter had been living with someone who hated her before she even knew her.
“But why didn’t you tell me?””
Helen looked ashamed.
“Because Vanessa begged me not to.””
“And you believed her?””
“No.””
Her answer surprised me.
“Then why?””
Helen reached into a drawer.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“Because she threatened to destroy my family.””
I stared at the envelope.
“What is that?””
“Something Claire gave me.””
I took it.
My hands shook.
“Why didn’t you give this to me before?””
Helen looked at me.
“Because Claire told me only to give it to you when Maya needed protection.””
I opened it.
Inside was a short note.
Marcus, if Helen gives you this, it means Vanessa has stopped pretending.
I read the next line.
There is one more person involved. Someone Vanessa convinced to help her.
I looked up.
“One more person?””
Helen nodded.
“I never knew who.””
Then my phone rang.
The school.
Again.
My heart dropped.
I answered.
“Hello?””
The principal’s voice sounded nervous.
“Mr. Carter, you need to come here immediately.””
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then:
“Someone filed a complaint against you.””
I frowned.
“Against me?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
May you like
The principal lowered his voice.
“Vanessa.””
