Chapter 2: The Secret Vanessa Kept
Vanessa stared at me with the phone still pressed against her ear.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she slowly lowered it.
“Marcus, you’re misunderstanding.””
I walked toward the counter.
“I heard Claire’s sister’s name.””
Her face hardened.
“You were listening?””
“No. I was walking into my own kitchen.””
She looked away.
“That’s not what you think.””
I had heard that sentence too many times in my life.
Usually, it came right before someone admitted they had done exactly what I thought.
“Then tell me what I should think,” I said.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You’re acting like I’m some kind of villain.””
I looked at her.
“I saw my daughter crying at breakfast.””
“She was upset.””
“She was afraid.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Maya is sensitive.””
That word bothered me.
People used it when they wanted to make a child’s pain seem inconvenient.
I walked away before I said something I would regret.
But I couldn’t sleep that night.
Every memory I had ignored started returning.
The times Maya stopped joining family movie nights.
The times she ate dinner alone because Vanessa said she was “too dramatic.””
The way Maya always asked permission before doing anything in her own house.
The next morning, I made breakfast myself.
Maya walked into the kitchen and stopped.
“Daddy?””
I smiled.
“Pancakes.””
She looked at the table.
“And I can sit there?””
I looked at the chair beside me.
“Of course you can.””
She hesitated.
“Even if Vanessa gets mad?””
The question broke something inside me.
“Sweetheart, you never need permission to sit with your family.””
She sat down slowly.
For a few minutes, she looked happy.
Then Ethan entered.
He looked between us.
“Can I sit too?””
I smiled.
“Of course.””
Ethan sat beside Maya.
He was quiet for a while before speaking.
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
“Why does Vanessa get angry at Maya so much?””
The room became silent.
I looked at my son.
“You’ve noticed?””
Ethan nodded.
“She thinks I don’t hear things, but I do.””
Maya looked at him.
“You knew?””
Ethan lowered his head.
“I didn’t know what to do.””
That was the moment I realized both of my children had been carrying something they shouldn’t have had to carry.
Later that afternoon, I confronted Vanessa again.
This time, I recorded nothing and shouted nothing.
I simply asked questions.
“Why did you contact Claire’s sister?””
Vanessa sat on the couch.
“Because she knows Maya better than you think.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means Claire wasn’t perfect.””
I froze.
“Don’t bring Claire into this.””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“You put Claire on a pedestal. Everyone does. But you don’t know everything about your first marriage.””
I stared at her.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa smiled slightly.
A smile that made me uncomfortable.
“She never told you why she was struggling before she died.””
My heart dropped.
Claire had been sick for months.
I knew she had been exhausted. I knew she had been scared.
But there were things I never knew.
“What did you hear?”” I asked.
Vanessa stood.
“Maybe you should ask her sister.””
That night, I called Claire’s sister, Rachel.
She answered after three rings.
“Marcus?””
“Rachel, I need to ask you something.””
There was a pause.
“Is this about Vanessa?””
I sat up.
“How did you know?””
Rachel sighed.
“Because she called me yesterday.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What did she ask you?””
Another pause.
Then Rachel said something I never expected.
“She wanted me to tell you that Claire never wanted Maya.””
I felt like the air disappeared from the room.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“Claire loved Maya.””
“I know.””
“Then why would Vanessa say that?””
Rachel’s voice became quiet.
“Because she doesn’t know the truth.””
I stood.
“What truth?””
Rachel hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“The day Claire died, she left a letter for Maya. A letter Vanessa has been trying to find for years.””
My heart started racing.
“Where is it?””
Rachel took a breath.
“Marcus, before I tell you, you need to understand something. That letter could destroy Vanessa’s entire story.””
I looked toward the hallway.
Toward Maya’s bedroom.
“What story?””
Rachel answered softly.
“The story that Maya was the reason Claire’s life fell apart.””
The call ended.
But I didn’t move.
Because suddenly I understood.
Vanessa wasn’t just being cruel.
May you like
She was trying to rewrite my daughter’s entire life.
And somewhere in my house, there was a letter that could reveal why.
