Chapter 9: The Truth About the New House
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Vanessa stood beside the dining table, holding her purse.
Rachel sat with her hands folded.
Margaret looked as though someone had taken the air out of the room.
I finally broke the silence.
"You're buying a house in California?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"It's not what you think.""
"Then explain it.""
She looked toward her attorney.
He quietly closed his notebook.
Vanessa took a breath.
"I was considering options.""
"Options for what?""
"For Mason's future.""
I shook my head.
"Why California?""
Rachel answered before Vanessa could.
"Because Mason's biological father has been considering relocating there for work.""
I turned toward Vanessa.
"Eric?""
She nodded reluctantly.
"He received a job opportunity near San Diego.""
"And you decided to move there?""
"I was thinking about it.""
"With Mason?""
"Yes.""
I stared at her.
"And Lily?""
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
"I thought she could stay with Rachel temporarily.""
Rachel immediately shook her head.
"That's not what I agreed to.""
Vanessa looked frustrated.
"Rachel, please.""
"No. You told me Mason wanted to spend more time with Eric. You said you wanted to make that possible.""
"That's true.""
"But you never told me you were planning to leave Daniel.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Leave me?""
She didn't answer.
My stomach tightened.
I hadn't even considered that the relocation plan might involve more than separating Lily from the family.
Vanessa sat down slowly.
"I thought if Mason had a chance to rebuild his relationship with Eric, it would help him.""
"Then why didn't you discuss that with me?""
"Because you would have said no.""
"To moving across the country without discussing it? Absolutely.""
She looked up.
"That's exactly why I didn't tell you.""
Her words landed like a slap.
I pulled out the chair opposite her.
"So you planned everything in secret because you knew I wouldn't agree?""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"I wanted to avoid another fight.""
Rachel shook her head.
"You weren't avoiding a fight. You were creating a whole new life behind his back.""
Vanessa's voice rose.
"You don't understand what it's like to watch your son struggle.""
Margaret finally spoke.
"And what about your daughter?""
Vanessa turned.
"I love Lily.""
"Then why are you treating her like a suitcase you can leave with somebody else?""
Vanessa began crying again.
I watched her carefully.
There was something I still didn't understand.
"Did Eric actually agree to this plan?""
Vanessa looked down.
"Not exactly.""
"What does that mean?""
Rachel opened her folder.
"He told me he wanted to spend more time with Mason, but he never offered to take Mason away from Daniel's household permanently.""
I leaned forward.
"Did he know about the house?""
Rachel shook her head.
"Not until recently.""
Vanessa looked furious.
"Why are you making this worse?""
Rachel met her eyes.
"Because you've already made it bad enough.""
I turned to Vanessa.
"Did you tell Eric that I was emotionally unstable? That I couldn't provide a stable home for Lily?""
She didn't answer.
I knew.
The answer was written across her face.
Rebecca placed her pen on the table.
"Mrs. Carter, we need to be clear about something. Any proposed move involving either child needs to be addressed through appropriate legal channels. A family disagreement does not give either parent the right to make unilateral decisions about a child's residence.""
Vanessa's attorney nodded.
"That's correct.""
For the first time that evening, Vanessa seemed to realize that her plan wasn't going to unfold as easily as she'd imagined.
But then she said something that changed the direction of the conversation.
"I didn't plan to abandon Lily.""
I stared at her.
"Then what did you plan?""
She looked directly at me.
"I wanted to take Mason to California for a fresh start. I thought Lily could stay with Rachel for a while, and after things settled down, we'd figure out what happened next.""
"Without me?""
"I thought you'd eventually understand.""
I leaned back.
"Vanessa, you were going to leave the state with one child, arrange for the other to live with your sister, and expect me to accept it afterward?""
She covered her face.
"I was overwhelmed.""
"Then you should have asked for help.""
"I did ask for help!""
"No. You asked people to help you carry out a decision you had already made.""
Rachel nodded slowly.
"That's exactly what happened.""
Vanessa looked at her sister.
"I thought you were on my side.""
Rachel's eyes filled.
"I am on your side. But I'm also on Lily's side. And I'm on Mason's side. I'm not going to help you hurt either child.""
The meeting ended shortly afterward.
Rebecca advised me not to make any agreements that evening. She would coordinate directly with Vanessa's attorney and address the proposed relocation through the proper process.
As I walked toward my car, Rachel followed me.
"Daniel?""
I turned.
She looked exhausted.
"I'm sorry.""
I nodded.
"Thank you for telling the truth.""
Rachel hesitated.
"There's one more thing.""
I stopped.
"What?""
She lowered her voice.
"Vanessa told me that Mason had been asking to live with his father for months. But I spoke to Eric yesterday.""
"And?""
"He said Mason never asked to move.""
I frowned.
"What?""
Rachel shook her head.
"Eric told me Mason had actually asked him whether he could spend more time with him while staying with you and Lily.""
I stared at her.
"So Vanessa invented the idea that Mason wanted to leave?""
"It seems that way.""
I looked down.
That was the part that hurt most.
She hadn't only manipulated Lily's feelings.
She'd manipulated Mason's relationship with his father, too.
When I arrived home, the house was quiet.
The living room lights were on.
Mason was sitting on the couch.
Lily was asleep beside him, her pink rabbit tucked under her arm.
He looked up.
"How did it go?""
I sat in the armchair.
"Your mother has been considering moving to California.""
Mason's face changed.
"With me?""
I nodded.
"She was planning to take you there.""
He looked down.
"Without Lily?""
"Yes.""
He stared at the floor.
"Why?""
I took a breath.
"She thought it would give you a fresh start with your biological father.""
Mason shook his head.
"I never asked for that.""
"I know.""
He looked toward Lily.
"She thinks she isn't wanted.""
I didn't respond.
Mason rubbed his eyes.
"I don't want to be the reason she feels that way.""
I moved closer.
"You're not the reason. None of this is your fault.""
He nodded.
Then he asked quietly:
"Can I tell you something I haven't told Mom?""
"Of course.""
"When Dad started calling again, I told him I wanted to see him. But I also told him I didn't want to leave you and Lily.""
I listened.
"He said that was okay. He said I didn't have to choose.""
Mason swallowed.
"But Mom kept saying I'd have a better life if I lived with him. She said I could have my own room, my own space, and more attention.""
He looked at me.
"Then she started saying Lily was the reason I couldn't have those things.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Did you believe her?""
"For a little while.""
His voice cracked.
"Sometimes I wished Lily would stop following me around. Then I felt terrible because she's just a kid.""
I put my hand on his shoulder.
"You're allowed to want your own space. You're allowed to get annoyed. None of that means your sister doesn't belong here.""
Mason nodded.
Then he glanced at the sleeping girl beside him.
"She's my sister.""
"Yes, she is.""
He carefully pulled a blanket over her.
A few minutes later, Lily stirred.
"Daddy?""
I moved beside her.
"Hey, sweetheart.""
She rubbed her eyes.
"Did you talk to Mommy?""
"I did.""
"Am I going to California?""
I looked at Mason.
Then back at Lily.
"Nothing has been decided, sweetheart. But you don't have to worry about being sent somewhere because you think you've done something wrong.""
She sat up.
"Can I stay here?""
I kissed her forehead.
"That's what we're working toward.""
She looked at Mason.
"Are you still going to Hawaii?""
Mason shook his head.
"Not without you.""
Lily smiled faintly.
Then she reached for her rabbit.
"I want to sleep in your room tonight, Daddy.""
"Of course.""
I carried her upstairs.
After tucking her into bed, I sat beside her until she fell asleep.
Her breathing became slow and steady.
Her tiny hand remained wrapped around my finger.
I thought about all the things she'd heard.
All the times she'd apologized for asking questions.
All the times she'd offered to be quieter, smaller, easier.
I promised myself she would never again have to earn her place in our family.
At 10:43 p.m., my phone rang.
It was Eric.
"Daniel, I'm sorry to call this late.""
"What's going on?""
"I just spoke to Mason.""
I glanced at Lily.
"Is everything okay?""
"Yes. But I think you need to know something about the California property.""
I walked into the hallway and closed the bedroom door gently.
"What about it?""
Eric hesitated.
"Vanessa asked me to sign a document stating that I intended to become Mason's primary caregiver if she relocated.""
I leaned against the wall.
"Did you sign it?""
"No.""
"Why?""
"Because I never agreed to that.""
I exhaled.
"Thank you.""
Then Eric said:
"There's something else. Vanessa told me the house was already purchased.""
I froze.
"Purchased?""
"Yes. She said she'd made the down payment and that the closing was scheduled for next week.""
My stomach tightened.
"With what money?""
"I assumed it was her savings.""
I closed my eyes.
The twenty-eight thousand dollars.
The relocation budget.
The secret account.
Suddenly, the pieces were beginning to fit together.
Then Eric added:
"Daniel, I found out who actually signed the purchase agreement.""
I waited.
"It wasn't Vanessa.""
My blood ran cold.
"Who was it?""
Eric's answer came quietly.
"Your name is on the paperwork.""
I stared at the wall.
"What?""
"She told the seller you had agreed to purchase the property together.""
I couldn't breathe.
I had never seen the house.
I'd never spoken to the seller.
I'd never signed a purchase agreement.
But apparently, someone had used my name to secure a property in California.
And when I checked my email, there was a new notification.
*Electronic signature confirmation — California property purchase.*
The document showed my name.
My email address.
And a signature I had never made.
I opened the attachment.
At the bottom was the date of the transaction.
Six weeks earlier.
I stared at it.
Then I noticed the final page.
A section titled *Source of Funds* listed the account number from which the deposit had been transferred.
It was our joint savings account.
And beside the transfer authorization was Vanessa's signature.
I immediately forwarded everything to Rebecca.
Her reply arrived less than a minute later.
Daniel, do not confront her until we have reviewed this. This may be much more serious than a custody disagreement.
Then another message appeared.
We need to know whether the electronic signature was authorized, and we need to preserve the original records.
I looked through the bedroom doorway at Lily.
She was asleep, completely unaware that her mother had apparently used my identity to purchase a house while planning to send her across the country.
I had spent eleven years believing I knew the woman I married.
Now I wasn't even sure I knew how much of our life together had been real.
And the next morning, Vanessa sent me one message.
We need to talk. I think it's time you heard my side of everything.
Attached was a photograph.
It showed a California house with a white front porch, a small backyard, and two bedrooms.
On the back of the photograph, Vanessa had written:
*"A fresh start for Mason and me.""*
There was no mention of Lily.
There was no mention of me.
And beneath the photograph was one final sentence:
The moving truck is booked for Monday.
May you like
I looked at the calendar.
Monday was three days away.
