Chapter 7: The Plan to Send My Daughter Away
"California?""
I repeated the word because my brain refused to accept it.
Claire Bennett remained silent for a moment.
"Yes. Rachel Carter. Your wife's sister. The proposed arrangement states that Lily would temporarily reside with her while Vanessa and Mason traveled between states for family reasons.""
"Family reasons? What family reasons?""
"That's not specified.""
I gripped the edge of the kitchen counter.
"Does Rachel know about this?""
"According to the documents, she has agreed in principle to provide temporary accommodation.""
I felt sick.
Rachel lived nearly two thousand miles away. Lily had visited her only twice, both times for short family gatherings. She barely knew the woman.
"Claire, my daughter has a school, friends, dance classes, and a home. Vanessa cannot simply decide to ship her across the country.""
"I understand. But I strongly recommend that you speak with an independent family attorney immediately. Don't sign anything, and preserve every communication.""
"I will.""
"And Daniel?""
"Yes?""
"There's a section in the financial statement you should examine carefully. It appears Vanessa has been planning this relocation for longer than the other documents suggest.""
I opened the attachment again.
At the bottom of the financial statement was a projected expense schedule.
Airfare.
Furniture.
School registration.
A six-month rental deposit.
And beside the total was a handwritten note:
Rachel — initial relocation expenses.
I stared at the amount.
Thirty-four thousand dollars.
Vanessa hadn't simply moved our savings.
She had budgeted for a new life for Lily somewhere else.
I ended the call and stood motionless.
Then I heard a small voice behind me.
"Daddy?""
I turned.
Lily was holding her drawing.
"Can I show you something?""
I quickly locked my phone.
"Of course.""
She climbed onto a chair and placed the drawing on the counter.
It showed our house, a blue car, and four people standing in the front yard.
Me.
Vanessa.
Mason.
Lily.
Above us, she'd written:
*OUR FOREVER HOME.*
I swallowed.
"That's wonderful, sweetheart.""
She pointed at the picture.
"That's where we'll all be when I come back from Grandma's.""
I knelt beside her.
"What do you mean?""
She shrugged.
"Mommy said maybe I could visit Grandma for a while. She said Aunt Rachel might have a special room for me too.""
My stomach tightened.
"When did Mommy tell you that?""
"Yesterday.""
"Did she say you were moving?""
Lily shook her head.
"She said it was a surprise.""
I looked into her eyes.
"Do you want to live with Aunt Rachel?""
Her little face crumpled.
"I don't know. I don't want to leave you.""
I pulled her into my arms.
"You're not going anywhere without us talking about it first.""
She pressed her face against my chest.
"Promise?""
"Promise.""
That afternoon, I contacted an independent family attorney named Rebecca Collins.
She had been recommended by a colleague and agreed to meet me the following morning.
I brought everything.
The emails.
The proposed agreement.
The financial transfers.
Mason's recordings.
And the messages from Eric.
Rebecca spent nearly an hour reviewing the documents.
Then she removed her glasses.
"Daniel, this is serious.""
"I know.""
"Has Vanessa filed anything formally?""
"Not that I know of.""
"Good. We need to establish exactly what has been submitted and whether any temporary orders exist. Until we know that, don't assume a proposed document has legal effect.""
I nodded.
"What should I do about Lily?""
"Maintain her normal routine. Keep communication with your wife calm and documented. Don't involve the children in the legal dispute.""
I looked down at the photograph of the relocation budget.
"How can someone plan to move a child across the country without discussing it with the other parent?""
Rebecca studied me.
"People sometimes convince themselves that their intentions justify their methods. Our job is to focus on the facts and Lily's welfare.""
She turned another page.
"There's something else. This financial account Vanessa opened may matter, but we need the complete transaction history. Don't access anything you're not authorized to access. Request records through the proper channels.""
I agreed.
Before I left, Rebecca asked one question.
"Does Lily know anything about this?""
"She knows her mother doesn't want her on the vacation. She knows she might stay with Grandma.""
Rebecca's expression softened.
"Then the most important thing you can do right now is make sure she doesn't feel responsible.""
I nodded.
That evening, I returned home to find Vanessa sitting at the dining table with a printed itinerary.
She looked up.
"Where have you been?""
"Meeting a lawyer.""
Her expression hardened.
"You hired a lawyer?""
"Yes.""
She pushed the itinerary toward me.
"Good. Then perhaps someone can explain to you why this family needs a fresh start.""
I didn't sit down.
"Where is Lily supposed to go after Hawaii?""
Vanessa stared at me.
"She's staying with Rachel temporarily.""
"Did you tell her that?""
"She's aware.""
"She's eight, Vanessa. She doesn't understand what you're planning.""
Vanessa folded her hands.
"Rachel has a beautiful home. She has more time. Lily would have her own bedroom.""
"She has a bedroom here.""
"She needs a different environment.""
"Why?""
Vanessa sighed.
"Because this household has become unbearable.""
I looked at her.
"Because Lily asks for attention?""
"Because you refuse to see how much this affects Mason.""
"Then let's ask Mason.""
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"Leave him out of this.""
"You already put his name on the agreement.""
She stood.
"Daniel, I'm trying to save my relationship with my son.""
"By sacrificing your daughter?""
"Don't use that word.""
"Then stop behaving as though Lily is something you can trade away.""
Vanessa grabbed the itinerary.
"You don't understand what I've had to deal with.""
I remained quiet.
She continued.
"Do you know what it's like to have one child constantly demanding attention while the other feels invisible?""
I shook my head.
"No. Because I don't believe one child has to disappear for the other to feel loved.""
Vanessa looked away.
Then she said something I hadn't expected.
"Rachel thinks this is the best solution too.""
I stared at her.
"Have you told Rachel everything?""
"Of course.""
"Have you told her you used our savings without my agreement?""
Her expression changed.
"That money was for the children.""
"Then why did you transfer it into an account only you control?""
She didn't answer.
A door opened upstairs.
Mason appeared at the top of the staircase.
"Mom?""
Vanessa turned.
"What?""
"Is Lily really moving to California?""
Vanessa's shoulders dropped.
"Mason, not now.""
"Just answer me.""
She looked at him.
"It's temporary.""
"How temporary?""
"Until things settle down.""
Mason descended the stairs.
"What if she doesn't want to go?""
Vanessa sighed.
"She'll adjust.""
He stared at her.
"Did you ask her?""
"She's too young to understand.""
Mason shook his head.
"That's what you keep saying whenever you don't want to listen to her.""
Vanessa's face reddened.
"Go to your room.""
"No.""
"Mason!""
He looked at her with tears in his eyes.
"If Lily goes, I don't want to go to Hawaii.""
Vanessa went completely still.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then she picked up her phone.
"Fine. We'll discuss this later.""
She walked into the bedroom and closed the door.
Mason stood in the hallway.
I put a hand on his shoulder.
"You okay?""
He shook his head.
"I think Mom's going to hate me.""
I looked at him.
"Your job isn't to make your mother happy by agreeing with something that's wrong.""
He nodded.
Then he asked quietly:
"Can I tell you something else?""
"Of course.""
He glanced toward the bedroom door.
"I found another email.""
My stomach tightened.
"What email?""
"Mom sent it to Aunt Rachel yesterday.""
He unlocked his phone.
"She said the Hawaii trip was supposed to be the last normal family vacation before everything changed.""
He showed me the message.
I read it.
Once we return, Daniel will have no choice but to accept the arrangement. I've already spoken to the school in California, and Rachel has agreed to help. The only thing left is getting the paperwork finalized.
Then came another paragraph.
I don't want Lily to know the move is permanent until we're ready. If she knows too early, Daniel will interfere.
I looked up.
"Mason, where did you find this?""
"On the tablet.""
I read the final line again.
And then I noticed the date.
The email had been sent three days earlier.
Vanessa hadn't just planned to send Lily away.
She had planned to keep it secret until the last possible moment.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Rebecca appeared.
Daniel, I reviewed the public filing records. Vanessa has requested an emergency consultation regarding relocation and temporary custody. We need to speak immediately.
I looked toward the bedroom door.
Vanessa was still inside.
May you like
And for the first time, I realized that the Hawaii departure date wasn't just a vacation deadline.
It was a countdown.
