Chapter 8: The Day Everything Finally Came Out

The next morning, Vanessa announced that we were leaving for Hawaii in four days.

She made the announcement over breakfast as if she were discussing the weather.

"I've confirmed the airport transportation," she said, spreading butter over her toast.

"We'll leave at six.""

I looked up.

"Who's going?""

Vanessa didn't meet my eyes.

"Me, you, and Mason.""

"And Lily?""

"Rachel will pick her up tomorrow.""

I put down my fork.

"That's not happening.""

Vanessa sighed.

"Daniel, we've discussed this.""

"No. You've announced it. That's different.""

Mason pushed his cereal bowl away.

"I'm not going.""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"Excuse me?""

"I said I'm not going to Hawaii if Lily can't come.""

She stared at him.

"You've been looking forward to this trip for months.""

"I thought Lily was coming.""

"She's staying with family.""

"Then I want to stay with family too.""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"You're being manipulated.""

Mason stood.

"I'm fifteen, Mom. I can think for myself.""

He walked away.

Vanessa turned toward me.

"This is because of you.""

I remained calm.

"No, Vanessa. This is because the children are finally hearing the truth.""

She grabbed her purse.

"I'm going to work.""

Before leaving, she pointed at me.

"Do not contact Rachel or my mother about this again.""

I raised an eyebrow.

"Why?""

"Because they're my family.""

I looked at her.

"Lily is your family too.""

She slammed the door.

An hour later, Rebecca called.

"Daniel, I have an update.""

I stepped into my office.

"What happened?""

"Vanessa's attorney contacted me. She's requesting that you sign a voluntary temporary placement agreement before the vacation.""

"Why?""

"She claims it would avoid conflict and give Lily time to adjust to her aunt's home.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Absolutely not.""

"I agree that you shouldn't sign anything without advice. But I want you to know there's another issue.""

"What?""

"Vanessa has submitted a statement alleging that you have been emotionally intimidating her and creating conflict in the household.""

I went still.

"What?""

"She says you've been pressuring Mason to reject her parenting decisions.""

I stared at the wall.

"That's completely false.""

"I know. But we need to respond carefully.""

Rebecca explained that Vanessa had also included selected recordings of arguments from our home.

I remembered the video Mason had shown me.

I wondered what else she had recorded.

"Daniel, do you have any evidence of your regular involvement with Lily?""

"School records, medical appointments, dance classes, messages with teachers. Everything.""

"Good. Gather it. We also need statements from people who can describe your parenting without becoming involved in the conflict.""

I agreed.

Then Rebecca said:

"One more thing. Vanessa's lawyer has asked whether you would agree to attend a family meeting this evening.""

"With whom?""

"Vanessa, her attorney, Rachel, and Margaret.""

I hesitated.

"Will the children be there?""

"They shouldn't be involved in an adult legal discussion.""

I agreed to attend.

That evening, I arrived at Margaret's house at seven.

Vanessa was already seated at the dining table.

Rachel sat beside her.

I'd met Rachel several times over the years. She was forty-two, divorced, and lived in San Diego.

She had always been friendly with Lily.

But now she looked uncomfortable.

Rebecca sat across from Vanessa.

A second attorney was beside her.

Margaret stood near the kitchen.

Nobody smiled.

Vanessa began.

"Thank you for coming. I want us to remember that this is about what's best for Lily.""

I looked at her.

"Then let's start with why you're planning to move her to California.""

Rachel shifted in her chair.

Vanessa answered.

"Because I believe she would benefit from a quieter environment.""

Rachel cleared her throat.

"Actually, Vanessa, I need to clarify something.""

Vanessa turned.

"Rachel, please.""

"No. I think we need to be honest.""

Rachel looked at me.

"Your wife told me that you had already agreed to the arrangement.""

I stared at her.

"I never agreed.""

Rachel nodded.

"That's what I suspected.""

Vanessa's face reddened.

"Why would you say that?""

"Because Daniel called me last week, and he sounded completely unaware of everything.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That was a misunderstanding.""

Rachel placed a folder on the table.

"And I want to be clear about something else. I never agreed to take Lily permanently.""

The room went silent.

Vanessa stared at her sister.

"What are you talking about?""

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

"You told me Lily needed a temporary place to stay while you and Daniel worked things out. You said she would visit me for a few weeks.""

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"That's what I meant.""

Rachel opened the folder.

"Then why did you send me a six-month relocation budget?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Rachel pulled out a printed email.

"You also sent me a school registration form and asked me to confirm that Lily would be living at my address until the following summer.""

I watched Vanessa's expression change.

"Rachel, you're misunderstanding the paperwork.""

"No, I'm not.""

Rachel's voice trembled.

"You asked me to prepare a room for a little girl who doesn't even know she's supposed to move here. You told me she would adjust after a few weeks.""

Vanessa leaned forward.

"I was trying to make this easier.""

Rachel shook her head.

"For whom?""

Nobody spoke.

Then Margaret placed another document on the table.

"I think everyone needs to see this.""

It was a copy of the email Vanessa had sent her weeks earlier.

The same one where Vanessa had written that Lily should not know the real reason for the vacation.

Margaret looked at her daughter.

"You told me to lie to my granddaughter.""

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"Mom, please don't.""

"You asked me to tell an eight-year-old that she wasn't going because her brother deserved a special trip.""

"I was trying to protect her.""

Margaret's voice cracked.

"Protect her from what? Being loved?""

Vanessa stood abruptly.

"That's enough!""

Rebecca remained seated.

"Mrs. Carter, I think we should continue calmly.""

Vanessa pointed at Rachel.

"You were supposed to help me!""

Rachel looked at her sister.

"I agreed to help Lily. Not help you remove her from your home.""

Vanessa turned toward me.

"Daniel, you have no idea what I've been dealing with.""

I stood.

"Then tell me. Tell everyone. What exactly did Lily do to deserve this?""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

For a moment, I thought she might finally answer honestly.

Instead, she said:

"Nothing. That's the problem.""

I frowned.

"What?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"She has you. She has your attention every second of every day. She has a father who would move mountains for her.""

I stared at her.

"She's eight.""

"And Mason has nobody!""

Rachel shook her head.

"Vanessa, that's not true.""

Vanessa ignored her.

"His father disappeared. You became his father, but you always had Lily. I wanted one thing that was just for Mason.""

I looked at her.

"So you decided to make Lily feel unwanted?""

"I never wanted her to feel that way.""

"But you knew she would.""

Vanessa began crying.

"I thought she would understand.""

Margaret sat down.

"She's a child, Vanessa. She thought she had to stop asking questions to earn her place in this family.""

Vanessa covered her face.

For a moment, the room was silent.

Then Rebecca spoke.

"There's another matter we need to address.""

She opened her briefcase and removed the financial records.

"Daniel has identified a transfer of twenty-eight thousand dollars from the joint savings account to an individual account in Vanessa's name.""

Vanessa lowered her hands.

"That money was used for family expenses.""

Rebecca looked at the records.

"The transfer occurred before the vacation was booked.""

Vanessa didn't respond.

"There's also a projected relocation budget totaling thirty-four thousand dollars.""

Rachel looked up.

"Thirty-four thousand?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Rebecca continued.

"We need a complete accounting of those funds.""

Vanessa stood.

"I don't have to answer these questions.""

Her attorney leaned toward her and whispered something.

She shook her head.

Then she turned toward me.

"Daniel, I made a mistake. I know that. But you need to understand that I was trying to do something good for Mason.""

I looked at her.

"Then why did you lie to everyone?""

She had no answer.

Just then, my phone vibrated.

It was a message from Mason.

Dad, Lily wants to talk to Mom. She heard us arguing yesterday, and she's been crying. Can you please come home?

I looked at Vanessa.

"She's waiting for you.""

Vanessa picked up her purse.

"I'll go.""

But before we could leave, Rachel spoke.

"Vanessa, there's something else you need to tell Daniel.""

Vanessa stopped.

"What now?""

Rachel looked directly at her sister.

"You never told him why you needed the money transferred before the vacation.""

Vanessa's face drained of color.

Rachel continued.

"Tell him about the house.""

I frowned.

"What house?""

Rachel looked at me.

"Vanessa has been making arrangements to purchase a property in California.""

I stared at my wife.

She looked away.

Rachel's voice softened.

"Daniel, the property isn't for Lily.""

I felt the room tilt.

"Then who is it for?""

May you like

Rachel hesitated.

"For Vanessa and Mason.""
