Chapter 5: The Son She Tried to Use

Nobody moved.

A thin stream of water spread across the kitchen tiles, mixing with the broken pieces of glass.

Vanessa stared at Mason.

"What did you just say?""

Mason held his phone tightly.

"I found the message.""

Vanessa took a step toward him.

"Give me that.""

"No.""

"Mason, give me your phone.""

"No! Just answer me.""

His voice trembled.

I had never seen him look at his mother like that.

"What did you tell Dad about Lily?""

Vanessa glanced at me.

"Daniel, this is between Mason and me.""

I shook my head.

"Not anymore.""

Mason unlocked his phone and held up the screen.

"I was looking for the hotel confirmation because I wanted to check the snorkeling schedule. Your email was still open on the tablet.""

Vanessa's face turned pale.

He continued.

"I saw a conversation with my dad.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Your biological father?""

Mason nodded.

"Mom's been talking to him.""

Vanessa tried to take the phone again.

"You're reading private conversations. That's inappropriate.""

Mason pulled it away.

"Why did you tell him Lily wouldn't be living with us anymore?""

Vanessa's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

I looked at Mason.

"What did the message say?""

He swallowed.

Then he read aloud.

"Mom wrote, 'Once Lily is staying with Margaret, things will be simpler. You won't have to worry about her affecting your relationship with Mason. I'll have more time to focus on him.''"

The room became painfully quiet.

Mason looked at his mother.

"Why would you tell Dad that?""

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

"Your father has concerns about the environment you're growing up in.""

"What environment?""

"He's worried about the tension between you and Lily.""

Mason let out a disbelieving laugh.

"We argue about the TV remote!""

"That's not all.""

"Then what?""

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

"You're old enough to understand that your sister needs a lot of attention. Your father wants you to have a more stable relationship with him, and I need to show him that I'm putting your needs first.""

Mason looked at me.

Then at his mother.

"So you want Lily gone because Dad doesn't like her?""

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

"That's not what I said.""

"But that's what you wrote.""

I watched him struggle to process it.

For years, Mason had carried the pain of having a father who rarely showed up.

He'd never talked about it much.

But I knew how deeply it affected him.

Now Vanessa was using that wound to make him believe he had to choose between having a relationship with his father and keeping his sister.

"Mason," I said quietly, "you don't have to choose.""

He looked at me.

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Don't interfere.""

"I'm not interfering. I'm telling him the truth.""

She pointed toward the stairs.

"Both of you need to stop treating me like I'm the villain here.""

Mason's eyes filled.

"Mom, did you tell Dad that Lily would be sent away permanently?""

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

"That was a possibility.""

"Did you tell him I wanted that?""

"No.""

"Then why did you put my name on the agreement?""

She looked away.

And that was answer enough.

Mason dropped his phone onto the counter.

"I don't want to go to Hawaii anymore.""

Vanessa's expression changed immediately.

"Don't be ridiculous.""

"I'm serious.""

"You've been looking forward to this trip for months.""

"I thought it was a family vacation!""

"It is.""

"No, it's not!""

His voice broke.

"You're making Lily think nobody wants her.""

Vanessa stared at him.

For a moment, I thought she might finally understand what she'd done.

Instead, she said something that made my blood boil.

"Mason, you have no idea how difficult it is to keep this household functioning when everything revolves around an eight-year-old.""

Mason stepped backward.

"She's my sister.""

"She's not your responsibility.""

"Then stop making her sound like she's a problem!""

He turned and walked upstairs.

Vanessa watched him go.

Then she looked at me.

"Are you happy now?""

I stared at her.

"How could you ask me that?""

"You've turned my son against me.""

"No, Vanessa. You used your son to justify hurting your daughter.""

She grabbed a dish towel and began wiping the spilled water.

"I was trying to fix this family.""

"By sending Lily away?""

"By giving Mason the stability he needs!""

I lowered my voice.

"Do you hear yourself?""

She threw the towel onto the counter.

"You're impossible.""

I walked out of the kitchen.

At the bottom of the stairs, I heard a quiet voice.

"Daddy?""

I turned.

Lily stood in the hallway holding her pink rabbit.

Her eyes moved between us.

"Is Mason mad because of me?""

My heart sank.

I crouched immediately.

"No, sweetheart.""

"But he shouted.""

"He was upset about something the grown-ups were discussing.""

"Did I make Mommy angry again?""

I took her hands.

"Listen to me, Lily. You didn't do anything wrong. Not today.

Not yesterday. Not ever.""

She studied my face.

"Promise?""

"Promise.""

She nodded, but her little shoulders remained tense.

Then she whispered, "Can I go see Mason?""

"Of course.""

She climbed the stairs slowly.

A few seconds later, I heard her knock on his bedroom door.

"Mason?""

Silence.

Then his voice.

"Yeah?""

"Are you okay?""

The door opened.

I watched from the bottom of the staircase as Mason crouched in front of her.

"I'm okay, squirt.""

"Are you mad at me?""

His face crumpled.

"No.""

"Because I can stay with Grandma if you want.""

Mason pulled her into a hug.

"Don't say that.""

"But Mommy said—"

"Mommy was wrong.""

Lily blinked.

Mason wiped a tear from her cheek.

"You're my sister. I don't want you going anywhere.""

I turned away.

I didn't want either child to see me crying.

That evening, I made dinner.

Vanessa stayed in the bedroom.

Mason helped Lily set the table.

He even let her choose the movie.

For a little while, the house felt almost normal.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID showed Claire Bennett.

I stepped onto the back porch.

"Hello?""

"Mr. Carter, I'm calling because Vanessa contacted me again.""

"What now?""

"She wants to accelerate the proposed arrangement.""

I gripped the railing.

"What arrangement?""

"The temporary placement for Lily. She says there has been a disagreement between you and the children, and she believes the situation is becoming unstable.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"She's lying.""

"I'm not making any conclusions. But I received another document from her this afternoon.""

"What document?""

"A statement describing your involvement in Lily's daily care.""

I frowned.

"What's wrong with it?""

"Several things. Most importantly, it claims that you've agreed to travel to Hawaii while Lily remains with her grandmother, and that you're comfortable with Vanessa making the necessary arrangements.""

I closed my eyes.

"That's completely false.""

"I suspected as much.""

"Did she submit it anywhere?""

"Not yet. But she wants me to prepare the final paperwork before the family leaves for Hawaii.""

I looked through the glass doors.

Inside, Mason was helping Lily cut her chicken into small pieces.

They were laughing.

I couldn't imagine how Vanessa could look at them and still believe separating them was the solution.

"Claire, I need you to send me everything Vanessa has submitted.""

"I can send you the documents relating to your proposed arrangement. You'll need your own attorney to advise you on your rights.""

"Understood.""

She hesitated.

"There's one more thing.""

"What?""

"Vanessa mentioned a financial concern. She said the Hawaii vacation was being paid for through a family account that she controls.""

I frowned.

"What family account?""

"She said the funds were intended for a property purchase, but she had permission to use them for travel.""

I went still.

The property purchase.

Vanessa and I had been saving for years to buy a small beach house in North Carolina.

We'd planned to use it as a family retreat.

The money sat in an account we both contributed to.

"How much did she spend?""

Claire read from her notes.

"Approximately twenty-eight thousand dollars, including the resort, flights, and private excursions.""

My stomach dropped.

Twenty-eight thousand dollars.

I had no idea she'd spent that much.

"Thank you, Claire.""

After the call, I went inside.

Vanessa was standing in the hallway.

She must have heard enough to know what the conversation was about.

"Who was that?""

"Your attorney.""

She crossed her arms.

"Why are you speaking to my attorney?""

"Because she's preparing documents about my daughter.""

"Our daughter.""

I stared at her.

"Then why are you trying to send her away?""

Vanessa looked toward the dining room.

"Keep your voice down.""

"Did you spend twenty-eight thousand dollars from our property savings on Hawaii?""

Her face changed.

"That money was for the family.""

"That money was for our future.""

"This trip is part of our future.""

"Without Lily?""

She didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"You're going to cancel the vacation.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"You don't get to tell me what to do.""

I looked at her for a long moment.

Then I said, "You're right. I can't control you. But you don't get to use my money, my signature, or my daughter's future without my consent.""

Her phone buzzed.

She looked down.

I saw a message preview.

*From: Mason's Dad.*

I need to speak to Daniel. There's something Vanessa hasn't told him.

Vanessa quickly turned the screen away.

May you like

But I had already read it.

And I knew the next conversation would change everything.
