Chapter 3: What My Wife Had Been Planning

I didn't sleep.

I spent the rest of the night staring at the ceiling, replaying Margaret's words.

Vanessa had been talking to a lawyer.

And Lily was the reason.

At six in the morning, I walked into the kitchen and found Vanessa making coffee.

She looked completely normal.

Her hair was tied back. Her makeup was done. Her suitcase stood near the door.

She was humming.

As if nothing had happened.

"Morning," she said.

I leaned against the counter.

"Where are you going?""

"To pick up a few things.""

"You're meeting someone?""

She glanced at me.

"Why?""

"Because Margaret called me last night.""

Her hand stopped over the coffee machine.

"What did she say?""

"She told me you've been speaking to a lawyer.""

Vanessa slowly placed her mug on the counter.

"Your mother-in-law has a habit of interfering.""

"Is it true?""

She picked up her phone.

"Daniel, I don't want to have this conversation before breakfast.""

"Then have it now.""

She looked directly at me.

"I consulted an attorney about some family matters. That's not a crime.""

"What family matters?""

"Things that concern the children.""

I stepped closer.

"Which child?""

Her jaw tightened.

"Both.""

"Then why is Lily being left out of this vacation?""

Vanessa took a long breath.

"Because I need to make a decision about what's best for everyone.""

I stared at her.

"You're talking about sending Lily away?""

She immediately looked offended.

"Don't twist my words.""

"Then tell me what they mean.""

She grabbed her keys.

"Ask your lawyer friend if you're so interested.""

And she walked out.

I stood there for several seconds.

Then I went upstairs to wake Lily.

She was already awake.

Her pink rabbit sat beside her pillow, and her suitcase was now completely empty.

"Good morning, princess.""

"Good morning, Daddy.""

I sat on the edge of her bed.

"Would you like to visit Grandma with me today?""

Her face brightened.

"Is Mommy coming?""

I hesitated.

"Not this time.""

Her smile faded.

"Oh.""

I brushed a strand of hair from her forehead.

"Grandma wants to see you.""

Lily nodded.

"Can I bring my drawing?""

"Of course.""

She reached into her bedside drawer and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

It showed three people standing beside a blue ocean.

A tall man.

A woman with long brown hair.

And a little girl wearing a yellow dress.

At the top, she'd written:

*MY FAMILY IN HAWAII.*

I felt my chest tighten.

"That's beautiful, sweetheart.""

She smiled weakly.

"I made it for Mommy.""

I folded the drawing carefully and put it in my pocket.

"Let's go show Grandma.""

Margaret lived twenty minutes away in a small house with white shutters and a garden full of hydrangeas.

When we arrived, she opened the door before I could knock.

Her eyes went straight to Lily.

"Oh, my baby!""

She hugged her granddaughter tightly.

"Grandma!""

Margaret kissed Lily's forehead.

"Come inside, sweetheart. I made pancakes.""

Lily ran toward the kitchen.

Margaret watched her disappear.

Then she turned to me.

"We need to talk.""

We sat at her dining table.

Margaret placed a thick envelope between us.

"I found these in Vanessa's car yesterday. She left her travel folder at my house when she came to discuss Lily's arrangements.""

I opened it.

Inside were printed emails, legal appointment notes, and a document with the heading:

*Proposed Temporary Guardianship Agreement.*

My stomach dropped.

I read the first page.

Vanessa had been exploring the possibility of sending Lily to live with Margaret for an extended period.

Not a weekend.

Not a week.

Several months.

The document listed reasons.

Child's adjustment difficulties.

Conflicting household priorities.

Need to provide stability for older sibling.

I looked up.

"She wants Lily to live here?""

Margaret nodded.

"She asked me to consider taking her until the end of the school year.""

I gripped the papers.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't know how serious she was until yesterday.""

Margaret reached for my hand.

"Daniel, she told me you were overwhelmed with work. She said Lily was becoming too dependent on you and that sending her here would give you time to focus on your marriage.""

I felt sick.

"That's a lie.""

"I know.""

"Did she tell you I agreed?""

Margaret nodded.

"She said you were considering it.""

I stood so quickly my chair scraped against the floor.

"I never agreed to anything.""

Margaret's eyes filled.

"I know, sweetheart. That's why I refused.""

I looked down at the document again.

There was a section describing Lily's current living situation.

It claimed that Vanessa was her primary caregiver and that I had limited availability due to work.

I almost laughed.

I was the one who took Lily to school every morning. I cooked dinner when Vanessa worked late. I attended parent-teacher conferences, took her to dance class, and sat beside her whenever she had nightmares.

Vanessa knew all of that.

She was deliberately building a story that made me look absent.

"Did she say why she wanted this?"" I asked.

Margaret hesitated.

"She said Mason was struggling.""

"With what?""

"With sharing the household. With having a younger child around.""

I shook my head.

"Mason has never told me that.""

Margaret lowered her voice.

"There's something else.""

I looked at her.

"Tell me.""

"Vanessa told me that if Lily stayed with me, she could finally give Mason the attention he needed without constantly managing conflict between the children.""

I looked toward the kitchen.

Lily was laughing at something on television.

Her little voice floated through the house.

I couldn't understand how her mother could hear that laugh and still consider her an inconvenience.

Then Margaret opened another envelope.

"This is the part I think you need to see.""

She handed me a printed email.

It was from Vanessa to a woman named Claire Bennett.

The subject line read:

*"Hawaii and the new arrangement.""*

I began reading.

Claire, I need to finalize the details before we leave.

Once Daniel sees how peaceful the trip is without Lily, he'll understand why this arrangement is necessary.

I also want Mason to get used to being the only child in the household when we travel.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

There's another reason I want this settled before school starts. Mason's father has offered to take a more active role in his life, but only if I can show that I'm giving Mason a stable environment. He doesn't want Lily's situation complicating things.

I read it again.

Mason's biological father.

The man who had barely contacted him in years.

Suddenly, the vacation wasn't about giving Mason special attention.

Vanessa was trying to prove that she could build a household centered around him, one that would satisfy his father and strengthen her position in whatever arrangement they were discussing.

And she was willing to push Lily out of that household to make it happen.

"Does Mason know?"" I asked.

Margaret shook her head.

"I don't think so.""

I stared at the email.

"Who is Claire Bennett?""

"An attorney Vanessa mentioned. I believe she handles family arrangements.""

I looked at the signature.

There was a phone number.

I took a photograph of the document.

Then I heard Lily calling.

"Daddy! Grandma says I can help make cookies!""

I folded the papers and put them back into the envelope.

"Coming, sweetheart!""

Before standing, I looked at Margaret.

"Thank you for refusing.""

She squeezed my arm.

"Daniel, there's something I need you to understand. Vanessa told me yesterday that if you refused to cooperate, she would make sure you couldn't stop the arrangement.""

My blood ran cold.

"What does that mean?""

Margaret looked toward the kitchen to make sure Lily couldn't hear.

"She said she had already spoken to someone about your work schedule and your financial situation.""

I stared at her.

"She's trying to use my job against me?""

Margaret nodded slowly.

"She believes she can convince people that Lily would be better off with me.""

I felt the room tilt.

For the first time, I understood that this wasn't simply a disagreement about a vacation.

My wife had been preparing a case against me.

And she had been doing it while smiling at our daughter, helping her pack a suitcase, and pretending everything was normal.

I stood and walked into the kitchen.

Lily was sitting at the table with flour on her nose.

"Look, Daddy!""

She held up a cookie shaped like a heart.

"It's for you.""

I smiled, though my eyes burned.

"That's the best cookie I've ever seen.""

She giggled.

Then she reached into her pocket and pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

"I made another picture for Mommy.""

I unfolded it.

This one showed a little girl standing beside a house.

Above the house were the words:

*I WILL BE GOOD SO MOMMY WILL WANT ME.*

I couldn't breathe.

I crouched beside her chair.

"Lily, sweetheart, look at me.""

She did.

"You don't have to be good enough for Mommy to love you.""

Her lower lip trembled.

"But I can try harder.""

I pulled her into my arms.

"No. You don't have to try harder. You are already enough.""

She held onto my neck.

And in that moment, I knew I couldn't stay silent anymore.

I would confront Vanessa.

I would protect my daughter.

But before I could do either, my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number appeared on the screen.

Daniel, this is Claire Bennett. Vanessa asked me to contact you regarding Lily's proposed living arrangements.

A second message followed.

There is one important detail you should know before you speak with your wife.

Then came a photograph of a document.

It was a draft agreement bearing Vanessa's signature.

And beside the section titled *Proposed Guardian*, there was a name I never expected to see.

Not Margaret's.

Not a relative's.

*Mason Reed.*

I stared at the screen.

My fifteen-year-old stepson was listed as the person Vanessa wanted to become responsible for my eight-year-old daughter.

May you like

And suddenly, I had a terrifying question of my own.

*Had Vanessa already convinced Mason that his little sister was something he needed to get rid of?*
