Chapter 6: The Man Who Finally Told the Truth

The following morning, I received a phone call from a man I hadn't spoken to in nearly four years.

His name was Eric Reed.

Mason's biological father.

I answered while standing in the garage.

"Hello?""

"Daniel?""

"Yes.""

"It's Eric. I know this is unexpected.""

I leaned against the workbench.

"What do you want?""

"I need to talk to you about Vanessa.""

I almost laughed.

"That's becoming a popular subject.""

Eric sounded uncomfortable.

"I know. Look, I don't want to make things worse. But I saw something last night that I think you should know.""

"What?""

"Vanessa told me you've agreed to let Lily stay with Margaret.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why does everyone believe that except me?""

"That's why I'm calling.""

I waited.

Eric continued.

"She said the arrangement was already decided. She told me you were supportive because you wanted more time to focus on Mason.""

"That's a lie.""

"I figured.""

"Why?""

"Because Mason called me.""

I straightened.

"When?""

"Last night. He was upset. He asked whether I'd told Vanessa that Lily couldn't be part of our family.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What did you tell him?""

"I told him no.""

Eric paused.

"Daniel, I need you to understand something. I haven't asked Vanessa to send Lily away. I haven't asked for Mason to become an only child. I haven't even discussed guardianship with her.""

"Then why is she saying you did?""

"Because I made a different suggestion.""

I waited.

"About six weeks ago, Vanessa contacted me. She said Mason was struggling with our relationship and wanted more time with me. I agreed that we should try to rebuild things.""

"That's reasonable.""

"She then asked whether I would consider taking Mason for part of the summer.""

I nodded slowly.

"Would you?""

"Yes. He's my son. Of course I would.""

"Then what happened?""

Eric exhaled.

"She started talking about how much easier things would be if Mason didn't have to share attention with Lily. She said Mason deserved to experience what it was like to have both parents focused entirely on him.""

I looked toward the garage door.

"She wanted Lily gone.""

"That's what it sounded like.""

"Did you agree?""

"No. I told her I wasn't interested in creating a situation where Mason felt he had to reject his sister to spend time with me.""

I rubbed my face.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"At first, I thought it was just an awkward conversation. I didn't realize she'd started preparing documents.""

I was silent.

Then Eric said something unexpected.

"There's another reason I'm concerned.""

"What?""

"Vanessa asked me to provide a written statement saying Mason was experiencing emotional distress because of Lily.""

My blood ran cold.

"What did you say?""

"I refused.""

"Did she explain why she needed it?""

"She said it would help establish that a temporary separation was in Mason's best interests.""

I stared at the concrete floor.

She wasn't simply trying to make Lily stay with Grandma.

She was trying to create a narrative.

One where Mason was the struggling child, Lily was the source of the problem, and Vanessa was the parent making difficult but necessary decisions.

"Eric, would you be willing to tell this to my attorney?""

"Yes.""

I wasn't expecting that answer.

"Why?""

"Because I owe Mason more than disappearing from his life whenever things get complicated.""

His voice softened.

"And I don't want him growing up believing that loving his sister means losing his father.""

I swallowed.

"Thank you.""

We ended the call.

I stood in the garage for another minute.

Then I heard the front door open.

Mason walked into the garage.

"Was that Dad?""

I nodded.

He looked uncomfortable.

"Did he say anything bad about me?""

"No, buddy. Quite the opposite.""

Mason leaned against the wall.

"He called me last night too.""

"What did you talk about?""

He looked down at his sneakers.

"He said he didn't want me to choose between him and Lily.""

I nodded.

"He's right.""

Mason rubbed his palms together.

"I know I haven't always been nice to her.""

"Nobody's perfect.""

"Sometimes I get annoyed when she follows me around.""

"That's normal.""

"But I don't want her to leave.""

I put a hand on his shoulder.

"You don't have to prove that to anyone.""

Mason looked at me.

"Do you think Mom really wants her gone?""

I struggled to answer.

"I think your mother has convinced herself that she's doing what's best. But that doesn't make what she's doing right.""

Mason nodded slowly.

Then he said, "I want to help.""

I studied him.

"How?""

He looked toward the house.

"There's something else you should know.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

"Mom has been asking me to record Lily.""

"Record her doing what?""

"Whenever she gets upset.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"She says it's so she can understand her behavior.""

I stared at him.

"How long has this been happening?""

"A few weeks.""

"Did she tell you to record anything specific?""

Mason hesitated.

"She told me that if Lily had a tantrum, I should make sure I got it on video.""

I felt sick.

"Did you?""

He nodded.

"Once.""

I waited.

"Mom was talking to Grandma on speakerphone. Lily came downstairs crying because she couldn't find her favorite stuffed animal. Mom told her to stop being dramatic.""

Mason swallowed.

"I recorded it because Mom asked me to. But afterward, Lily saw my phone and asked if I was making fun of her.""

His eyes filled.

"I felt horrible.""

I squeezed his shoulder.

"Where's the video?""

"On my phone.""

"Can I see it?""

He nodded and handed it over.

The video was short.

Lily stood in the living room, tears rolling down her cheeks.

"Mommy, I can't find Bunny.""

Vanessa was sitting on the couch.

"Then look properly.""

"I did.""

"You're always making a big deal out of nothing.""

Lily wiped her nose.

"But Bunny helps me sleep.""

Vanessa sighed.

"You're eight years old. You need to stop acting like a baby.""

The video ended.

I stared at the screen.

It wasn't dramatic.

There was no screaming.

No tantrum.

Just a little girl asking for comfort and being told she was too much trouble.

Mason took his phone back.

"There's another video.""

He opened a second recording.

This one was from the previous weekend.

Vanessa was on the phone in the kitchen.

Her voice was clear.

"Once the Hawaii trip is over, things will be different. Daniel will have to accept that Lily can't remain the center of this household.""

Then she laughed.

"And honestly, Mason deserves to be the child everyone worries about for once.""

The recording ended.

I felt cold.

Mason looked at me.

"I didn't know she was saying things like that.""

I put the phone down.

"Thank you for showing me.""

He nodded.

"Please don't tell Mom I recorded her.""

"I won't.""

We walked inside together.

Lily was sitting at the dining table drawing.

She looked up.

"Mason! Look!""

She held up a picture of two people holding hands beside a plane.

"That's us going to Hawaii!""

Mason looked at the picture.

Then he crouched beside her.

"That's awesome, squirt.""

Lily smiled.

"Do you think we'll sit together?""

"Definitely.""

I watched them for a moment.

Then my phone vibrated.

It was an email from Claire Bennett.

The subject line read:

*URGENT — DOCUMENTS RECEIVED FROM VANESSA CARTER.*

I opened it.

There were three attachments.

The first was the proposed temporary placement agreement.

The second was a financial statement.

The third was a letter addressed to a family court mediator.

I opened the letter.

My hands went numb.

Vanessa had written that I was emotionally attached to Lily to an unhealthy degree, that my relationship with her interfered with Mason's stability, and that I was unwilling to recognize the damage being caused to my stepson.

But the final paragraph was worse.

If Daniel refuses to cooperate with the proposed arrangement, I am prepared to pursue primary custody of Lily and request that his parenting time be restricted until he demonstrates that he can prioritize her emotional needs over his personal attachment.

I read it twice.

She was threatening to take my daughter from me while claiming she was protecting her.

Then I noticed a handwritten note attached to the final page.

It was addressed to Claire.

Please file this before November 10. I need the arrangement finalized before Daniel discovers what happened to the savings account.

I froze.

What happened to the savings account?

I immediately called our bank.

After verifying my identity, the representative placed me on hold.

A few minutes later, she returned.

"Mr. Carter, I can confirm that a transfer was made from your joint savings account three days ago.""

"How much?""

"Twenty-eight thousand dollars.""

"Where did it go?""

She hesitated.

"To an account ending in 4812.""

"Whose account?""

"According to the transfer record, the receiving account belongs to Vanessa Carter.""

I closed my eyes.

"Can you tell me when that account was opened?""

"One moment.""

I heard typing.

Then the representative said something that made my entire body go cold.

"Mr. Carter, that account was opened under your wife's name approximately six months ago.""

Six months.

Vanessa had been preparing for this long before Hawaii.

And as I looked at the date of the first transfer, I realized something even more disturbing.

The money hadn't been moved to pay for the vacation.

It had been transferred weeks before she'd even booked it.

I hung up and called Claire.

"There's been a financial transfer from our joint account. I need to know what Vanessa is planning.""

Claire was quiet for a moment.

Then she said:

"Daniel, I think you need to sit down.""

"What?""

"The documents Vanessa submitted include a proposed relocation plan.""

I gripped the phone.

"Relocation where?""

"That's the part I didn't want to tell you over email.""

My heart began pounding.

"Claire, tell me.""

She lowered her voice.

"Vanessa isn't planning to leave Lily with Margaret indefinitely.""

I stared at the wall.

"Then where?""

"She's proposing that Lily move out of state after the Hawaii vacation, with a person named in the financial documents as her temporary caregiver.""

I felt my blood turn cold.

"Who?""

Claire paused.

Then she gave me the name.

*"Vanessa's sister, Rachel. She lives in California.""*

I looked toward the living room.

Lily was showing Mason her drawing again.

Neither child knew what was coming.

And I suddenly understood why Vanessa had been so determined to keep Lily away from Hawaii.

May you like

She hadn't planned to bring her daughter home after the vacation.

She had planned to leave the trip with a family that no longer included her.
