Chapter 4: The Name on the Agreement

I stared at the photograph on my phone until the screen went dark.

Mason Reed.

My fifteen-year-old stepson.

The boy whose first baseball glove I'd bought. The boy I'd driven through three winters of early-morning soccer practices. The boy who once told me I was the closest thing he'd ever had to a father.

Now his name was written beside a section titled Proposed Guardian on a document concerning my eight-year-old daughter.

I looked toward the kitchen.

Lily was still decorating cookies with Grandma Margaret, humming softly as she sprinkled chocolate chips over the dough.

I couldn't let her see my face.

I stepped outside and called Claire Bennett.

She answered almost immediately.

"Mr. Carter?""

"Yes. I received your message. I need you to explain why my stepson's name is on a guardianship agreement.""

There was a pause.

"Before I discuss the details, I need to clarify that the document you received is a preliminary proposal. It hasn't been executed.""

"Why is Mason listed?""

"Your wife indicated that she wanted him involved in Lily's care if the proposed arrangement moved forward.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"He's fifteen.""

"I'm aware.""

"He's a child himself. How can he be responsible for another child?""

"That's one of the concerns I raised with your wife.""

I closed my eyes.

"Who prepared this document?""

"I did, based on information Vanessa provided. However, I did not recommend appointing Mason as a legal guardian. The language in the draft reflects a family-support proposal, not an approved guardianship.""

"Did Vanessa tell you I agreed to send Lily away?""

Another pause.

"She told me you were aware of the possibility and that you were having difficulty accepting it.""

I almost laughed.

"That's an interesting way of describing someone who has never agreed to it.""

"Mr. Carter, I understand you're upset. But I would strongly advise you to seek independent legal representation before signing anything.""

"I won't be signing anything.""

"Good. Also, I recommend that you preserve all communications related to this matter.""

I thanked her and ended the call.

For several minutes, I stood in Margaret's garden, listening to the wind move through the trees.

Then I noticed something else in the photograph Claire had sent.

At the bottom of the agreement was a date.

It had been prepared nearly two months earlier.

Two months.

Vanessa had been planning this before she ever mentioned Hawaii.

I walked back inside.

Margaret was wiping flour from Lily's cheeks.

"Everything okay, sweetheart?"" she asked.

I forced a smile.

"Yeah. Just handling something.""

Lily held up another cookie.

"This one's shaped like a butterfly!""

I kissed her forehead.

"Beautiful.""

She studied my face.

"Daddy, are you sad?""

I crouched beside her.

"Just thinking about something. I'm okay.""

She touched my cheek with her flour-covered finger.

"Don't worry. I can help you.""

That little sentence nearly destroyed me.

I hugged her before she could notice my eyes filling.

Later that afternoon, I drove Lily home.

Vanessa's car was already in the driveway.

Mason was sitting on the front steps, wearing headphones.

He looked up when we approached.

"Hey, Lily.""

"Hi, Mason!""

She ran inside to show her mother the cookies.

Mason stayed outside.

I sat beside him.

"Can we talk?""

He pulled one headphone away.

"Sure.""

I looked at him carefully.

"Do you know anything about your mother making arrangements for Lily to stay with Grandma?""

His face changed.

"What?""

"She's been talking to a lawyer.""

Mason looked toward the front door.

"I don't know.""

"Your name was included in a document.""

He frowned.

"What document?""

I showed him the photograph.

He stared at it.

Then he pushed the phone away.

"What the hell?""

I rarely heard him swear, and the anger in his voice surprised me.

"Did your mother ever talk to you about becoming responsible for Lily?""

"No!""

"Did she say anything about Lily moving away?""

Mason shook his head.

"She said we were going to Hawaii because I needed some time with her. That's all.""

I watched his face.

He didn't look guilty.

He looked confused.

"Why would my name be there?"" he whispered.

"I was hoping you could tell me.""

He stood and began pacing.

"That's messed up.""

"Mason—"

"No, seriously. I don't want Lily to move away.""

I felt something loosen in my chest.

He looked at me.

"She annoys me sometimes. She's my little sister. That's what little sisters do.""

I almost smiled.

"Fair enough.""

He kicked a small stone off the step.

"Mom told me Grandma was going to watch Lily while we were in Hawaii. She said you agreed.""

"I didn't.""

Mason looked at me.

"She said you wanted some time alone.""

I stared at him.

There it was.

Another lie.

Before I could respond, the front door opened.

Vanessa stood there.

"Mason, what are you doing?""

"Talking to Daniel.""

"I can see that. Come inside.""

Mason didn't move.

"Mom, why is my name on a document about Lily?""

Vanessa's expression went rigid.

She looked at me.

"You showed him that?""

"He deserves to know why his name is being used.""

Vanessa stepped onto the porch.

"Mason, we discussed giving Lily a little space. That's all.""

"No, we didn't.""

"Sweetheart, you're misunderstanding.""

"You put my name on a paper saying I should look after her?""

Vanessa sighed.

"It was just a suggestion.""

Mason shook his head.

"I'm fifteen. I can't even drive.""

"I know that.""

"Then why would you write that?""

Vanessa reached for his shoulder.

He stepped away.

"Don't make this bigger than it is.""

Mason's voice cracked.

"You're making it bigger than it is!""

He walked past her and disappeared inside.

Vanessa turned toward me.

"You've completely poisoned him against me.""

I stood.

"No. He's asking questions because you put his name on something he never agreed to.""

She folded her arms.

"You had no right to involve him.""

"You involved him when you put his name on that agreement.""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"We need to talk privately.""

"Fine. Let's talk.""

She opened the door and stepped aside.

Inside, Lily was sitting on the living room rug, arranging her cookies on a plate.

"Mommy! Look what Grandma and I made!""

Vanessa barely glanced at them.

"That's nice, sweetheart.""

Lily's smile disappeared.

I noticed.

So did Vanessa.

But she said nothing.

I waited until Lily went upstairs before following Vanessa into the kitchen.

She poured herself a glass of water.

"Daniel, this family cannot continue like this.""

"What does that mean?""

"It means we need a different arrangement.""

"For whom?""

"For everyone.""

I placed my phone on the counter.

"Did you tell Claire that I agreed to send Lily away?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

"Did you tell her I was too busy to care for my own daughter?""

"I told her what I believed was happening.""

"You lied.""

Her eyes flashed.

"Watch your mouth.""

I leaned forward.

"Did you tell her that Mason was willing to become responsible for Lily?""

Vanessa set down her glass.

"I thought it would make things easier.""

"Did you ask him?""

"He understands more than you think.""

"No, Vanessa. He's fifteen. He understands that his mother is planning a vacation without his sister.""

She shook her head.

"You've always been threatened by my relationship with Mason.""

I stared at her.

"Is that really what you believe?""

Before she could answer, Mason appeared in the doorway.

"Mom?""

Vanessa turned.

"What?""

He held up his phone.

"There's something you need to explain.""

His face was pale.

"Why did you tell Dad that my biological father agreed to take Lily away if I didn't?""

Vanessa's glass slipped from her hand.

May you like

It shattered against the kitchen floor.

And for the first time since this nightmare began, my wife looked genuinely afraid.
