Chapter 9: The Battle Begins

The courthouse was only twenty minutes away.

But it felt like the longest drive of my life.

Marcus sat beside me in the back seat.

Neither of us spoke at first.

The silence wasn’t uncomfortable.

It was unfamiliar.

For months, we had filled every conversation with arguments.

Now there was nothing left to fight about.

Only the truth.

Finally, Marcus spoke.

“Mom.””

I looked at him.

“Yes?””

“I’m sorry.””

Two words.

Simple.

But they carried everything.

The church.

The wedding.

The humiliation.

The months of believing lies.

I looked out the window.

“I know.””

His eyes lowered.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””

“I know.””

“I mean it.””

I turned toward him.

“Marcus.””

He looked at me.

“You hurt me.””

His face fell.

“But you’re still my son.””

A tear appeared in his eyes.

He looked away quickly.

The driver pulled up to the courthouse.

Richard was already waiting outside.

He walked toward us with a stack of documents.

“We’re running out of time.””

I stepped out.

“What do we have?””

He handed me a folder.

“The lawsuit claims Marcus authorized the transfer dispute.””

“That’s false.””

“Yes.””

“Can we prove it?””

Richard looked serious.

“Maybe.””

“Maybe?””

“The signature is fake. But whoever created it was careful.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Can they prove I didn’t sign it?””

Richard looked at him.

“That depends.””

“On what?””

“Whether we can find the original evidence.””

I frowned.

“What evidence?””

Richard opened the folder.

“The device.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What device?””

“The computer used to create the documents.””

My heart sank.

“You think they kept it?””

“They had to.””

“Why?””

“Because the lawsuit was filed too quickly. They needed templates, files, records.””

Richard looked toward the courthouse.

“Someone inside their operation has the evidence.””

We entered the building.

The hallway was crowded.

Lawyers.

Reporters.

People moving quickly.

And then I saw him.

David.

Standing near the courtroom doors.

Confident again.

Beside him was Claire.

She looked exhausted.

When she saw me, she looked away.

David smiled.

“Mrs. Anderson.””

I ignored him.

He stepped closer.

“You really came.””

“Yes.””

“I thought you might surrender.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t know me very well.””

He smiled.

“No. But I know people.””

He leaned closer.

“And people break.””

I looked at Marcus.

Then back at him.

“Sometimes.””

I paused.

“But sometimes they rebuild.””

The courtroom doors opened.

“Everyone inside.””

We entered.

The judge took his seat.

The hearing began.

David’s attorney spoke first.

“Your Honor, this case concerns a disputed transfer of significant family assets.””

Richard stood.

“My client disputes the validity of the claim.””

The judge looked at the documents.

“Mr. Anderson, did you authorize this lawsuit?””

Marcus stood.

“No, Your Honor.””

The opposing attorney smiled.

“Convenient.””

Marcus looked at him.

“It’s the truth.””

The attorney presented the recording.

“This evidence suggests otherwise.””

The fake recording played.

The courtroom listened.

My son’s fake voice filled the room.

When it ended, everyone looked at Marcus.

The judge asked:

“Mr. Anderson, can you explain this?””

Before Marcus could answer, Richard stood.

“Yes, Your Honor.””

He walked forward.

“We can.””

Everyone turned.

Richard held up a small envelope.

The room became silent.

“What is that?”” the judge asked.

Richard looked at me.

Then at Marcus.

Then he answered.

“Evidence that proves my client’s son was framed.””

David’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Because he recognized the envelope.

And he knew exactly what was inside.

The judge leaned forward.

“Where did you get this?””

Richard opened it.

“From someone who finally decided to tell the truth.””

The courtroom doors opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Everyone turned.

Including Claire.

Her face went completely pale.

Because the woman walking in wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone from David’s past.

May you like

Someone who knew every secret he had tried to bury.

And she was carrying the one thing that could destroy him forever.
