Chapter 18: Daniel’s Final Warning

We sat in the office for nearly a minute without moving.

The video remained paused.

Daniel’s face frozen on the screen.

A memory trapped in pixels.

A husband.

A father.

A man who had been gone for years.

But somehow, he was still protecting us.

Marcus looked at me.

“Were you ever going to tell me?””

The question hurt.

Not because it was unfair.

Because it was fair.

I sat down slowly.

“I don’t know.””

He looked surprised.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

I looked at Daniel’s image.

“Because I hoped you would never need to know.””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“I thought you didn’t trust me.””

“I trusted you.””

“Then why?””

I took a breath.

“Because I didn’t trust the world around you.””

He didn’t answer.

Richard stepped back.

“I think you both need to watch this.””

Nobody argued.

I pressed play.

Daniel appeared again.

His voice filled the room.

“Marcus.””

My son stared.

“If you are seeing this, something has gone wrong.””

Daniel paused.

“I want you to know something first.””

He smiled slightly.

“Your mother loves you more than anything in this world.””

Marcus looked down.

Daniel continued.

“She will make decisions you don’t understand.””

Another pause.

“She will let you be angry with her.””

My chest tightened.

“But she will never stop fighting for you.””

Marcus wiped his face.

Daniel continued.

“The reason I created this message is because I discovered something.””

The screen flickered.

“Someone close to our family has been manipulating Marcus.””

Marcus looked at me.

Daniel said the words next.

“Not because Marcus is weak.””

A pause.

“Because Marcus is valuable.””

The room went silent.

Daniel continued.

“I discovered a hidden financial network connected to people who target family businesses.””

Richard leaned closer.

“This matches the investigation.””

Daniel continued.

“David Carter is involved.””

My heart sank.

“But he is not the beginning.””

A chill moved through me.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“The person who introduced David into our world was someone I trusted.””

Marcus whispered:

“Thomas.””

But Daniel shook his head on the screen.

“Not Thomas.””

Everyone froze.

The video continued.

“Thomas made mistakes. He was manipulated. But he was not the architect.””

I felt my breath stop.

Then Daniel said:

“The person behind this has access to our family history, our finances, and our private information.””

He looked serious.

“Someone who knows exactly where to hurt us.””

The screen paused briefly.

Then Daniel said:

“Evelyn.””

My heart stopped.

Marcus looked at me.

Daniel continued.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

I leaned forward.

“This person will try to make you doubt your own judgment.””

Daniel’s expression softened.

“Evelyn, I know you.””

I felt tears forming.

“You will want to protect everyone. You will carry blame that does not belong to you.””

A pause.

“But you must remember something.””

The video became clearer.

“The person attacking us is not trying to steal the company.””

Everyone waited.

“They are trying to erase the family that built it.””

The screen went black.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then the video restarted automatically.

A second file.

One we hadn’t seen.

Daniel appeared again.

But this time, he looked worried.

“Evelyn, if you are watching this second message, then the first warning was not enough.””

My blood ran cold.

He looked directly at the camera.

“I need you to know the final truth.””

Marcus leaned forward.

Daniel took a breath.

“The person who started this plan…”

The video glitched.

The audio broke.

Then came back.

“…is someone you believe is gone.””

I stared at the screen.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“Someone from our past.””

The image distorted again.

The final words came through clearly.

“Someone who should have never returned.””

Then the video ended.

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked confused.

“Who is he talking about?””

I didn’t answer.

Because there was only one person from our past who fit those words.

Someone everyone thought was gone.

Someone Daniel had mentioned only once.

Someone whose name I hadn’t heard in twenty years.

Richard looked at me.

“Mrs. Anderson?””

I whispered the name.

And the moment I said it…

Marcus’s face changed.

Because he knew the name too.

“The man who disappeared after Dad died.””

I nodded.

The man Daniel once called his greatest mistake.

The man we believed was gone forever.

My first husband’s old business partner.

The man who started the original company with Daniel.

The man everyone thought had vanished.

“Victor Hale.””

May you like

And somewhere, after all these years…

Victor Hale was back.
