Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Lies

The church doors slammed open.

Everyone turned.

But no one walked in.

Marcus stood frozen, staring at his phone.

The message from David remained on the screen.

Your mother found out. Leave now.

Three words kept repeating in my mind.

Found out what?

Because that was the question that mattered.

I had spent months defending myself against accusations I didn’t understand.

Marcus believed I was trying to control him.

Claire believed I was trying to steal their future.

But now I realized something.

They weren’t afraid of me.

They were afraid of what I might discover.

“Marcus,” I said softly.

He looked at me.

“What?””

“Call him.””

“I already did.””

“And?””

“Straight to voicemail.””

I nodded.

“Again.””

He pressed the call button.

The church filled with silence as the phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then voicemail.

Marcus lowered the phone.

“He’s gone.””

Claire crossed her arms.

“This proves nothing.””

Everyone looked at her.

She noticed.

Her confidence weakened.

“I mean… David could be anywhere.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did he warn you?””

Her face changed.

“I didn’t say he warned me.””

“You just did.””

She went silent.

Marcus stared at her.

“Claire.””

She turned toward him.

“Please don’t do this here.””

“Do what?””

“Question me like I’m a criminal.””

The irony was almost impossible to ignore.

She had spent months convincing him I was one.

Now she was upset because someone questioned her.

Marcus walked away from the altar.

The guests watched every step.

“Tell me the truth.””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I love you.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It is.””

“No, it isn’t.””

His voice cracked.

“Did you know about the investigation?””

She looked down.

That was enough.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Oh my God.””

I watched my son realize the truth piece by piece.

It wasn’t one huge moment.

It was a thousand small ones.

Every conversation.

Every warning.

Every time he chose to believe someone else.

“Marcus,” Claire whispered.

He stepped back.

“How long?””

She didn’t answer.

“How long have you been looking into my mother?””

“I was protecting us.””

“No.””

Her eyes widened.

“No?””

“You were protecting yourself.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Claire looked around at the guests.

Then lowered her voice.

“I knew your mother would never willingly hand over control.””

I stared at her.

Hand over control?

That was what this had always been about.

Not family.

Not love.

Control.

“What did you plan to do?”” Marcus asked.

Claire wiped her tears.

“I planned to make sure you had what was already yours.””

Marcus laughed once.

A painful sound.

“Mine?””

“Yes.””

“My mother built that company.””

“She built it for you.””

“No.””

He looked at her.

“She built it because she worked for it.””

Claire became quiet.

Then her expression hardened.

“You’re choosing her?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was when Claire reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I guess there’s no reason to hide this anymore.””

My stomach tightened.

“What is that?””

She looked at me.

“A backup plan.””

Marcus took the envelope from her.

He opened it.

Inside was a document.

He read the first line.

Then the second.

Then his face went completely blank.

“What is this?””

Claire didn’t respond.

“Claire.””

Her voice became almost a whisper.

“It’s insurance.””

Marcus handed me the paper.

I read it.

And I felt something colder than anger.

The document was dated three months earlier.

It was an agreement between Claire and David.

A private agreement.

A percentage split.

If Marcus gained control of the family assets, Claire would receive ownership shares.

But that wasn’t the worst part.

At the bottom of the page was another signature.

A signature I recognized.

My son’s.

Marcus looked confused.

“I never signed this.””

I stared at the paper.

Then at him.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

I pointed to the signature.

“This isn’t yours.””

His face changed.

“Then whose is it?””

Before I could answer, a man’s voice came from the back of the church.

“Mine.””

Everyone turned.

A figure stood in the doorway.

May you like

David.

And he was smiling.
