Chapter 14: The Fall of the Man Who Controlled Everything
For the first time, David Carter looked powerless.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Powerless.
Marcus noticed immediately.
“What account?””
David didn’t answer.
“David.””
Still nothing.
Richard looked at me.
“I think we need to know.””
David’s attorney stepped forward.
“Your Honor, this is irrelevant.””
The judge looked at him.
“Is it?””
The attorney stopped.
Because everyone knew.
If David’s personal accounts were frozen during a hearing about financial fraud, it was absolutely relevant.
Richard turned to David.
“Who froze the account?””
David stared at him.
“You already know.””
Richard didn’t smile.
“No. I want you to say it.””
David looked at me.
And something about that look bothered me.
It wasn’t hatred.
It was disappointment.
As if he believed I had beaten him unfairly.
“You planned this.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The backup.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
David laughed.
“You always were careful.””
“I was prepared.””
“For me?””
“No.””
I looked at Marcus.
“For life.””
The judge interrupted.
“Mr. Carter, answer the question.””
David looked away.
Finally, he said:
“The federal investigators.””
The room erupted.
Marcus stared.
“Federal investigators?””
David closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
I felt a chill.
This was bigger than our family.
Bigger than our company.
Richard leaned closer.
“Mrs. Anderson, did you know?””
“No.””
And I meant it.
I knew David was dangerous.
I didn’t know he was already under investigation.
The judge turned to David.
“Are you currently under investigation for financial crimes?””
David’s attorney objected.
“Your Honor—”
The judge raised a hand.
“Mr. Carter?””
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
Marcus looked sick.
“How long?””
David didn’t answer.
“How long?””
“Two years.””
The words landed like a punch.
Two years.
While Marcus trusted him.
While Claire prepared a wedding.
While I wondered why my son was changing.
David had been living a double life.
The judge reviewed the documents.
“Miss Brooks, does your evidence relate to these investigations?””
Natalie stood.
“Yes.””
She opened another file.
“David created fake investment opportunities using other people’s money.””
She looked at Marcus.
“He needed access to a wealthy family with legitimate assets.””
Marcus understood immediately.
“Me.””
Natalie nodded.
“Yes.””
David looked at her.
“You’re enjoying this?””
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
“I’m fixing what I helped break.””
That answer surprised me.
She wasn’t asking for forgiveness.
She was accepting responsibility.
The judge looked at Richard.
“Does your client wish to continue the ownership dispute?””
Richard looked at me.
Then at Marcus.
I knew the answer before he spoke.
“No, Your Honor.””
The judge nodded.
“Then the emergency petition is dismissed.””
A wave of relief moved through the courtroom.
But it wasn’t over.
Not for me.
Not for Marcus.
Because there was still one person I needed to understand.
Claire.
She sat quietly at the back.
No tears.
No excuses.
Just watching.
After the hearing ended, Marcus approached her.
I stayed back.
This was something he needed to do alone.
“I need to ask you something.””
Claire looked up.
“I know.””
“Did you ever love me?””
Her eyes filled.
“I did.””
Marcus looked away.
“But not enough.””
She didn’t argue.
That was the most honest thing she had said.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing everything.””
Marcus laughed sadly.
“You mean money.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I mean security.””
He looked at her.
“That doesn’t make it okay.””
“I know.””
A long silence passed.
Then Marcus asked:
“When did it become a plan?””
Claire looked down.
“When David told me your mother would never accept me.””
I watched Marcus’s expression.
“Why?””
“Because he said she would always see me as someone chasing your money.””
I almost laughed.
Because that was the cruelest part.
David had convinced everyone of the exact thing he was doing.
Claire continued.
“He said if I wanted a future with you, I had to protect us.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You didn’t protect us.””
“I know.””
“You destroyed us.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
For a moment, I saw the woman she could have been without David’s influence.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
A message from Richard.
My heart stopped.
Because the message contained a photograph.
A photograph taken inside my company headquarters.
The caption said:
*We found the person who helped David access the files.*
I opened the image.
And my hands went cold.
Because standing beside David in the photo…
Was someone I knew.
May you like
Someone I trusted.
Someone who had been with our family for twenty years.
