Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the Folder
I walked back toward the church slowly.
Not because I was afraid.
Because after everything that had happened, I knew the truth rarely arrived gently.
The wedding guests watched me enter.
The same people who had looked away when Marcus pushed me out were now staring as I crossed the aisle.
No one whispered this time.
No one laughed.
The silence was heavier.
Marcus stood near the altar, still holding his phone. His face looked different now.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Confused.
And for the first time in months, he looked like the little boy who used to run to me when he was scared.
“Mom,” he said.
I stopped a few feet away.
“What did you find?””
He glanced at Claire.
She immediately looked away.
That tiny movement told me everything.
People can control their words.
They can practice their excuses.
But their eyes always reveal the truth first.
Marcus held out the folder.
“This was in our wedding documents.””
I took it from him.
The cover was simple.
A cream-colored folder with Claire’s initials printed in gold.
I opened it.
The first few pages were wedding contracts, venue agreements, and guest information.
Then I saw it.
My name.
Not handwritten.
Typed.
At the top of a document.
I read the title.
“Financial Investigation Report.””
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“What is this?””
Marcus swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
I flipped through the pages.
My bank accounts.
My company.
My properties.
My personal history.
Someone had been investigating me.
Not as a mother.
As a target.
I looked at Claire.
She stepped back.
“Explain.””
Her face turned pale.
“Mrs. Anderson, I think there’s been a misunderstanding.””
I almost laughed.
A misunderstanding.
That was the word people used when they wanted to make betrayal sound smaller.
“A misunderstanding?”” I repeated.
“Yes.””
She forced a smile.
“Someone must have put that there.””
I looked down at the document again.
“Your initials are on the folder.””
Her mouth opened.
Then closed.
Marcus looked at her.
“Claire?””
She immediately reached for his hand.
“Marcus, please. Don’t let her manipulate you.””
I stared at her.
“Manipulate him?””
“Yes.””
Her voice became sharper.
“You’ve always controlled him.””
The guests shifted uncomfortably.
I looked at Marcus.
“You believe that?””
He didn’t answer.
And that hurt more than anything.
Not because I expected him to defend me.
Because I realized he had spent months believing the worst version of me.
I turned another page.
Then I saw something that made my heart stop.
A payment record.
A large transfer.
From an account I didn’t recognize.
To a private consulting firm.
The description was clear.
“Asset review and acquisition preparation.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Did you know about this?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Claire stepped forward.
“You’re twisting things.””
“Am I?””
“Yes. You’re making me look guilty because you’re angry.””
I looked at her calmly.
“I’m not angry.””
She seemed surprised.
“I’m disappointed.””
Marcus looked down.
That word affected him.
Because he knew disappointment from me had always been worse than anger.
I closed the folder.
“Marcus, who introduced you to Claire?””
He frowned.
“What?””
“Who introduced you?””
“My friend David.””
“And who introduced David to your company?””
Marcus hesitated.
“I did.””
I nodded.
There it was.
The missing piece.
Months earlier, Marcus had brought a new consultant into the business.
A man named David who claimed he could help expand the company.
I had warned Marcus to be careful.
He told me I was old-fashioned.
Now I wondered if David had been the beginning of everything.
“Where is David today?”” I asked.
Marcus looked around.
His expression changed.
“He was supposed to be here.””
“Was?””
Marcus checked his phone.
His face became pale again.
“What?””
“He’s not answering.””
Claire’s eyes moved toward the church entrance.
Just for a second.
But I noticed.
“Claire,” I said.
She froze.
“Where is David?””
“I don’t know.””
“You looked at the door.””
“No, I didn’t.””
Marcus stepped between us.
“Mom.””
I looked at my son.
“He’s involved.””
“You don’t know that.””
“No,” I said quietly.
“But I know something.””
“What?””
I held up the folder.
“Someone wanted you to hate me before you discovered the truth.””
Marcus looked at Claire.
And for the first time, doubt entered his eyes.
Then his phone vibrated.
He looked down.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
From David.
Marcus’s face changed completely.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
He slowly turned the phone around.
May you like
The message was only six words.
“Your mother found out. Leave now.””
