Chapter 11: The Secret My Husband Left Behind

The hearing was temporarily paused while the court reviewed the new evidence.

But the damage was already done.

Everyone in that room knew David Carter wasn’t just a man involved in a family dispute.

He was someone who had spent years creating them.

Marcus sat beside me in the hallway.

Neither of us spoke.

Until finally he said:

“Mom.””

I looked at him.

“I should have listened.””

I looked down.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I need to say this.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“I thought you were trying to control me.””

I stayed quiet.

“I thought you didn’t believe in me.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because every time I wanted something, you warned me.””

I nodded slowly.

“Because I was afraid.””

He looked surprised.

“Afraid?””

“Yes.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Of losing you.””

The words surprised both of us.

Marcus looked away.

“My whole life, I tried to protect you from making mistakes.””

“I know.””

“But maybe I protected you too much.””

He swallowed.

“I wanted to prove I wasn’t just your son.””

I understood then.

The thing David exploited wasn’t greed.

It was insecurity.

Marcus wanted to feel worthy.

David simply gave him a dangerous way to prove it.

Richard approached us.

“We need to talk.””

I stood.

“What happened?””

He lowered his voice.

“Natalie’s evidence helped us, but there’s still a problem.””

“What problem?””

“The court documents.””

“What about them?””

“They were signed with Marcus’s identity.””

“But they’re fake.””

“Yes.””

“Then why is it a problem?””

Richard looked at Marcus.

“Because whoever created them had access to something only family members should have.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“Your father’s private archive.””

My heart stopped.

Daniel’s archive.

Nobody knew about that.

Except…

I looked at Marcus.

He looked confused.

“I don’t know what that is.””

I believed him.

Daniel had created the archive after building the company. It contained private records, legal plans, and family agreements.

Only one person besides me knew about it.

My husband’s attorney.

And he had passed away years ago.

“Richard,” I said.

“What?””

“Who accessed it?””

He hesitated.

“We’re still investigating.””

“That means you have a suspicion.””

Richard looked away.

That told me everything.

“Who?””

He sighed.

“Your son.””

Marcus stood immediately.

“What?””

“Not you personally.””

Richard explained.

“Someone accessed the archive using your old employee credentials.””

Marcus looked confused.

“I haven’t worked in that department for years.””

“I know.””

I stared at the floor.

Someone had used Marcus’s identity.

Again.

But this time, they weren’t just attacking my company.

They were reaching into Daniel’s final protections.

My husband had always been careful.

He knew people changed.

He knew money could reveal the worst in someone.

But he never imagined our own child would be manipulated into destroying himself.

A security officer approached.

“Mrs. Anderson?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

“You need to come with me.””

“Why?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“There’s been a development.””

Richard stepped forward.

“What development?””

The officer handed him a tablet.

Richard read it.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I took the tablet.

On the screen was a security report.

Access log.

Date.

Time.

User.

I stared.

The name listed there was impossible.

Because the person who accessed Daniel’s archive wasn’t Marcus.

It wasn’t David.

It wasn’t Claire.

It was me.

My own account.

My own authorization.

I looked at Richard.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“Someone used my identity.””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at the screen.

“Mom…”

I looked at my son.

And for the first time that day, I felt something close to fear.

Because whoever was behind this wasn’t just copying documents.

They weren’t just creating fake signatures.

They knew exactly how to make it look like we betrayed ourselves.

The courtroom doors opened.

A clerk stepped out.

“Mrs. Anderson?””

“Yes?””

“The judge is ready to continue.””

I handed the tablet back.

As we walked inside, Richard leaned toward me.

“Be careful.””

“Why?””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Because whoever did this knows your family better than David does.””

I looked across the courtroom.

David was watching me.

But he wasn’t smiling anymore.

May you like

Because he knew something too.

The real enemy had just entered the game.
