Chapter 8: The Bride’s Secret

Nobody spoke.

Claire stood near the church doors, one hand gripping her purse.

The woman who had walked in expecting to become part of my family now looked like someone trying to escape a crime scene.

Marcus stared at her.

“What did you just say?””

Claire looked at him.

“I said David isn’t the only person who lied.””

His face hardened.

“Who else?””

She looked at me.

And for the first time since I met her, I saw fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“I didn’t know everything.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

“No, Marcus. Listen.””

He turned away.

“You already told me enough.””

“Please.””

The desperation in her voice made everyone uncomfortable.

Even David looked irritated.

That caught my attention.

Because David was supposed to be the one controlling the situation.

But Claire was making him nervous.

“Claire,” I said.

She looked at me.

“Start talking.””

She swallowed.

“I met David before I met Marcus.””

The church erupted with whispers.

Marcus looked like someone had physically struck him.

“What?””

She closed her eyes.

“Three years ago.””

“Three years?””

“Yes.””

He stared at her.

“How?””

Claire hesitated.

Then she said:

“He was helping me after my father’s business failed.””

I watched Marcus carefully.

He was hurt.

Not angry.

Not yet.

“Helping you?””

“Yes.””

David interrupted.

“Claire.””

She ignored him.

“He told me he had connections. He said he could help me rebuild my life.””

Marcus looked at David.

“And?””

Claire looked down.

“And later, he told me about you.””

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Marcus whispered:

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know anymore.””

That answer was honest.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Marcus walked closer.

“Did you love me?””

She opened her mouth.

No words came.

That was the answer.

He stepped back.

I had seen my son angry.

I had seen him arrogant.

But I had never seen him this broken.

David finally spoke.

“She’s emotional. Don’t let her manipulate you.””

I looked at him.

The irony was almost unbelievable.

Marcus turned toward David.

“You planned this from the beginning.””

David shrugged.

“I planned an opportunity.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You planned my life.””

David’s expression hardened.

“You had everything handed to you.””

“That doesn’t mean you get to steal it.””

David stepped closer.

“You think your mother is different?””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

David pointed at me.

“She controlled every part of your life too.””

I felt the words hit.

Because that was the lie that had worked.

Not because it was true.

Because it was close enough to something Marcus had felt.

Parents make mistakes.

I had made them.

I had protected Marcus so much that maybe I forgot to teach him how to stand alone.

I looked at my son.

“Marcus.””

He looked at me.

“I know I made mistakes.””

His expression changed.

“I know I tried to protect you from every difficult thing.””

I took a breath.

“But I never tried to own you.””

The church became silent.

“I gave you everything because I loved you.””

Marcus looked away.

David interrupted.

“Beautiful speech.””

I ignored him.

“But love does not mean giving someone permission to destroy what others built.””

Marcus lowered his head.

A tear fell.

Only one.

Then he wiped it away.

David noticed.

And his expression changed.

He knew something had shifted.

Marcus was no longer fighting me.

He was standing beside me.

“Where is the original lawsuit?”” Marcus asked.

David looked confused.

“What?””

“The real documents.””

David said nothing.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You didn’t file this just electronically. There are originals.””

His confidence returned slightly.

“Why would I tell you?””

“Because you made one mistake.””

David smiled.

“And what was that?””

Marcus looked at Claire.

Then at him.

“You underestimated my mother.””

I felt something I hadn’t felt in months.

Not victory.

Hope.

David’s phone suddenly rang.

He looked down.

The screen changed his expression instantly.

“What happened?”” Claire asked.

David didn’t answer.

He walked away from everyone and answered.

We watched his face.

The arrogance disappeared.

After a few seconds, he ended the call.

Marcus noticed.

“What was that?””

David looked at him.

Then at me.

His voice was quieter.

“The court accepted the emergency hearing.””

My stomach tightened.

Richard immediately spoke through the phone.

“Mrs. Anderson, we have a problem.””

“What?””

“The hearing is in one hour.””

I looked at the clock.

One hour.

David smiled again.

Because he thought time was on his side.

But he didn’t know something.

I had spent thirty-five years building a company.

May you like

And I had spent the last six months preparing for betrayal.

The only question was whether my preparation would be enough.
