Chapter 6: The Betrayal Before The Wedding

The room went silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

My mother’s hand slowly dropped from the doorknob.

Daniel looked confused.

“Stealing?””

I held the phone tighter.

“Rachel, what do you mean?””

The woman on the other end sounded careful.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t discuss details without confirming your identity first.””

I looked around the room.

My mother’s face had lost all color.

That was enough confirmation for me.

“What do you need?””

“I need you to come to my office.””

“When?””

“As soon as possible.””

I looked at the wedding disaster surrounding me.

The canceled vendors.

The ruined plans.

The family that had spent years pretending I was the problem.

“Today.””

Rachel hesitated.

“Emily, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“Your father left instructions that this information should only be revealed if you were ever placed in a situation where your family tried to financially control you.””

My heart stopped.

My father predicted this.

Not the wedding.

Not the exact situation.

But the pattern.

I ended the call slowly.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel finally said,

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“Is it true?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You believe her over me?””

Daniel looked hurt.

“I asked if it’s true.””

My mother looked away.

That was when I knew.

Not everything.

But enough.

I picked up my folder.

“I’m going to meet Rachel.””

My mother stepped forward.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“No?””

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

I smiled sadly.

“That’s the first honest thing you’ve said.””

She flinched.

Daniel looked between us.

“I’m coming with you.””

I didn’t expect that.

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because I think I need to hear the truth too.””

For the first time in years, my brother wasn’t asking me to fix something.

He was admitting he didn’t know.

And somehow, that mattered.

The drive to Rachel’s office was quiet.

Daniel kept his hands on the steering wheel.

After twenty minutes, he finally spoke.

“I should have noticed.””

I looked out the window.

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I should have seen what Mom was doing.””

“Yes.””

He sighed.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology was small.

Late.

But real.

I didn’t forgive him immediately.

Some wounds don’t disappear because someone finally says the right words.

But I heard him.

Rachel’s office was in an old brick building downtown.

She was waiting for us.

The moment she saw me, she stood.

“You look exactly like your father.””

I smiled faintly.

“Everyone says that.””

She gestured toward the chairs.

“Please sit.””

She opened a file.

Inside were bank records.

Documents.

Copies of signatures.

I recognized my mother’s handwriting immediately.

Rachel placed one paper in front of me.

“Your father started investigating six months before he died.””

I looked at the document.

Transfers.

Withdrawals.

Numbers.

A pattern.

“What is this?””

Rachel folded her hands.

“Your mother had been transferring money from the business account into personal accounts.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“How much?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Over several years?””

She paused.

“Nearly two hundred thousand dollars.””

My brother went pale.

“No.””

I stared at the documents.

The wedding.

The lies.

The money.

Suddenly, everything looked different.

My mother hadn’t just created a fake wedding.

She had spent years creating a fake reality.

Rachel continued.

“Your father confronted her.””

I looked up.

“What happened?””

“She promised to repay everything.””

“Did she?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

I looked down.

My father knew.

He knew my mother was taking from the family.

He knew Daniel was being protected.

He knew I would eventually be the one expected to carry the consequences.

Rachel handed me another envelope.

“This was his final instruction.””

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then you have reached the moment I feared most.

The moment when everyone expects you to sacrifice yourself because you are the responsible one.

I swallowed.

The next line made my hands shake.

But you need to know something.

You are not the family’s emergency plan.

You are not their replacement parent.

You are my daughter.

And you deserve to build a life where you are loved, not used.

I closed my eyes.

Then Rachel spoke softly.

“There’s one more thing.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“Your father didn’t leave the account only for you.””

My eyebrows furrowed.

“What do you mean?””

She pushed another document across the table.

“The account had one condition.””

I read the sentence.

And my heart dropped.

Because my father had left me the money…

But only if I uncovered the truth about what happened to his estate.

Rachel looked at me.

“Emily, your father believed someone would try to take everything from you.””

She paused.

“And he left you a way to stop them.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then at the documents.

Then back at Rachel.

“Who?””

Rachel’s expression turned serious.

“The person who convinced your father he could trust them most.””

I held my breath.

“Who was it?””

May you like

Rachel slowly answered.

“Your mother.””
