Chapter 18: The Third Child

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

The idea was impossible.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another person connected to my father.

It felt like our family had been built on hidden rooms, and every door we opened revealed another hallway.

Daniel finally whispered,

“Is she lying?””

Nobody answered.

Because we all wanted to believe she was.

But too many lies had already been revealed.

Victoria immediately started searching through the files.

“Your father would have documented this.””

Sarah looked hurt.

“Why would he hide another child?””

I looked at her.

The pain in her face was familiar.

Because she had spent her whole life asking the same question.

Victoria stopped.

She pulled out a document.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

She looked confused.

“This isn’t possible.””

I walked closer.

“What did you find?””

She handed me the paper.

A birth record.

A name.

My hands shook.

Because the name was not familiar.

But the date was.

The child was born before me.

Before Daniel.

Before Sarah.

Victoria looked at me.

“Your father knew.””

I stared at the document.

“But he never mentioned her.””

“Maybe he didn’t know at first.””

I looked at the signature.

My father’s.

A legal acknowledgment.

He knew.

A painful thought entered my mind.

My father had loved three children.

And I spent my entire life believing I was the only daughter.

Sarah sat down.

“I thought I was the secret.””

Her voice broke.

Now there was someone else.

Daniel looked lost.

“Who is she?””

Victoria looked at the document.

“Her name is Ava.””

The name felt strange.

Ava.

A person who existed somewhere.

A person who had been missing from our lives.

I looked at the phone.

Linda knew.

Michael knew.

My mother knew.

Everyone knew except us.

I felt anger rising.

Not because Ava existed.

Because everyone kept making choices for us.

Everyone decided what truths we could handle.

What pain we deserved.

My mother called.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

There was silence.

Then her voice.

“Emily…”

“Where are you?””

“I can explain.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“You can tell the truth.””

Another silence.

Finally she whispered an address.

We drove there.

A small apartment across town.

When we arrived, my mother was sitting inside.

Linda was gone.

My mother looked exhausted.

Older.

Smaller.

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

“Where is Linda?””

“She left.””

“What does she want?””

My mother looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

I laughed quietly.

“That’s your favorite sentence.””

She looked down.

“She wanted the documents.””

“Why?””

“Because they prove everything.””

I stepped closer.

“Everything about what?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered,

“Your father’s first family.””

The words felt strange.

First family.

“What does that mean?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Before me, your father was married.””

Nobody spoke.

Sarah looked shocked.

“What?””

My mother nodded.

“Her name was Rebecca.””

I felt dizzy.

Another woman.

Another life.

Another secret.

“And Ava?””

My mother nodded.

“His first daughter.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew about all of them?””

My mother started crying.

“Yes.””

“Why hide it?””

Her voice broke.

“Because I was afraid.””

I looked at her.

“Afraid of what?””

“That you would all leave me.””

The answer was so small.

So human.

But it didn’t erase what she had done.

My mother looked at me.

“Your father loved all of you.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“But he loved honesty more.””

I looked away.

Because that sounded like something he would say.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

A photo.

A woman standing outside my father’s grave.

Underneath it were words.

*I’m Ava.*

May you like

Another message appeared.

*And I know who killed your father’s trust before he died.*
