Chapter 10: The Truth Daniel Buried

I had spent the entire day discovering that my family had secrets.

But I wasn’t prepared for my brother to become one of them.

Daniel stood in the middle of the room, staring at the floor.

The confident person who had walked into the room that morning was gone.

In his place was someone who looked like he had been carrying a weight too heavy for too long.

I felt my chest tighten.

“What happened the night Dad died?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

He looked up.

His eyes were already full of regret.

“I was there.””

The room went completely silent.

My mother closed her eyes.

Victoria slowly placed her briefcase down.

“You need to tell her.””

I looked between them.

“You were there?””

Daniel nodded.

“I didn’t tell you because I thought I was protecting you.””

A bitter laugh escaped my mouth.

“Everyone in this family uses that excuse.””

His face fell.

“I know.””

For once, he didn’t argue.

He didn’t defend himself.

He just looked broken.

“I was seventeen,” he said quietly.

I sat down because my legs suddenly felt weak.

“Tell me.””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“The night Dad died, he wasn’t supposed to go to the office.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He had planned to stay home. He wanted to talk to us.””

My heart started racing.

“Talk about what?””

Daniel looked at our mother.

She looked away.

“He found out about the money,” Daniel whispered.

I already knew that.

But hearing it from him felt different.

“He confronted Mom that night.””

My mother’s voice was sharp.

“Daniel.””

He ignored her.

“They were arguing.””

Victoria watched him carefully.

“What happened next?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I heard them from upstairs.””

I closed my eyes.

I imagined my father downstairs.

Alone.

Trying to fix another problem.

Trying to save the family again.

“Mom told him she needed more time,” Daniel continued.

“She said she had everything under control.””

“And Dad?””

“He said he couldn’t protect her from the consequences forever.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked at me.

“Then he told her he was going to change the trust.””

My heart stopped.

The trust.

The one my mother tried to alter.

“He was going to remove her control completely.””

My mother suddenly spoke.

“That’s not what happened.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You know it is.””

She became quiet.

I stared at my brother.

“What did you do?””

The question came out softer than I expected.

Daniel looked down.

“I went downstairs.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?””

“Because I wanted them to stop fighting.””

His voice cracked.

“When I got there, Dad was holding the documents.””

“The trust documents?””

He nodded.

“He looked angry. Not at me. At the situation.””

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“He told Mom he was done cleaning up her mistakes.””

I looked at my mother.

She was completely still.

“And then?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Then Mom asked me to help her.””

My stomach dropped.

“Help her?””

“She told me Dad was overreacting.””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“She said if Dad changed everything, our family would fall apart.””

I whispered,

“And you believed her.””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t have to.

I felt something break inside me.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

“You helped her.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know what she was going to do.””

“What did you do?””

“I took the documents.””

The words landed like a punch.

Victoria looked at him.

“You removed the original trust papers.””

Daniel nodded.

“I thought I was giving Mom time to calm down.””

“And Dad?””

Daniel looked away.

“He went after them.””

My heart pounded.

“What do you mean?””

“He left the house.””

The room became colder.

Daniel’s voice barely came out.

“Twenty minutes later, we got the call.””

Nobody moved.

The accident.

My father’s death.

The night I thought was just a terrible tragedy.

There had been so much more.

“You knew,” I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

“I knew I was involved.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

He looked away.

“Yes.””

The word destroyed something inside me.

“You knew.””

“I was scared.””

I stood up.

“You let me spend seven years thinking everything was normal.””

“I was ashamed.””

“You let Mom control everything.””

“I was trying to fix it.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word came out stronger.

“You were trying to avoid facing it.””

Daniel looked like I had slapped him.

Because it was true.

Victoria quietly said,

“There is something else.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She opened another file.

“Your father’s final message.””

I frowned.

“What final message?””

“The one he recorded before leaving the house that night.””

Daniel looked up suddenly.

“What?””

Victoria pulled out a small device.

“He sent it to me because he suspected something might happen.””

My breath caught.

A recording.

My father’s last words.

Victoria pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a familiar voice.

A voice I hadn’t heard in seven years.

“If you’re hearing this, then I was right to be worried.””

My eyes filled instantly.

My father continued.

“I need whoever finds this to understand something.””

A pause.

Then his voice became softer.

“I love my family. Even when they make mistakes.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was crying silently.

“But love does not mean allowing someone to destroy what you built.””

The recording continued.

“There is one person I trusted completely.””

My mother looked nervous.

Then my father said,

“Emily.””

My heart stopped.

“She is the only person who has never asked what she could take.””

The room blurred.

Then came the final sentence.

“If anything happens to me, Emily must know the truth before anyone else.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Until Victoria looked at me and said,

“Emily, your father left you one more thing.””

I wiped my tears.

“What?””

She opened the file.

“A video.””

My hands shook.

“From him?””

Victoria nodded.

“But there’s a reason he never sent it.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

May you like

She stared at the screen.

“Because he recorded it for the day you finally stopped letting them use you.””
