Chapter 3: The Secret Behind The Invitations

The living room became completely silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that comes right before something breaks.

Daniel stared at Chloe.

“Chloe, calm down.””

But she wasn’t looking at him anymore.

She was looking at the papers in her hands.

The truth was sitting right there in black and white.

My name.

My credit card number.

My signatures.

Every payment.

Every deposit.

Every promise that someone would “pay me back later.””

My mother stepped forward.

“This doesn’t change anything.””

I looked at her.

“It changes everything.””

She shook her head.

“You’re still trying to embarrass your brother.””

I laughed quietly.

“Embarrass him?””

I pointed at the folder.

“I spent months protecting him.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Can we not do this today?””

I turned toward him.

“Today?””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“Daniel, your wedding was supposed to happen today because I spent every night making sure it could.””

He looked uncomfortable.

But not guilty enough.

That was the part I couldn’t understand.

I had expected anger.

I had expected my mother to attack me.

But I had secretly hoped my brother would finally see what happened.

Instead, he was worried about the inconvenience.

Chloe threw the papers onto the table.

“You said your parents paid.””

Daniel swallowed.

“My mom handled the payments.””

Everyone looked at my mother.

She immediately pointed at me.

“She offered to help.””

I stared at her.

“I offered to help. I didn’t offer to be used.””

My mother’s face hardened.

“You always exaggerate.””

I stepped closer.

“Do you know what I remember?””

Nobody answered.

“I remember waking up at 2 a.m. because the florist called about a missing order.””

I looked at Daniel.

“I remember sitting in my car outside the venue because you forgot the final payment deadline.””

Then I looked at Chloe.

“I remember you telling me, ‘You’re lucky you get to be part of something this beautiful.’”

Her face changed slightly.

Because she remembered.

“I remember all of it,” I said.

Daniel sat down slowly.

For the first time, he looked lost.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

I stared at him.

“Because I thought you cared enough to notice.””

That sentence hit him.

His eyes dropped.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then my mother’s phone rang.

She answered.

“Hello?””

Her expression changed immediately.

“What?””

She walked toward the kitchen.

“What do you mean the photographer won’t come?””

I exchanged a glance with Daniel.

The photographer.

Another payment made by me.

Another thing they assumed would magically happen.

My mother returned moments later.

“They canceled.””

Chloe looked terrified.

“The flowers?””

My mother checked her phone.

“They canceled too.””

Daniel stood up.

“You canceled everything?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I picked up my folder.

“I stopped paying for something I was never allowed to be part of.””

Nobody had anything to say.

Then Chloe grabbed her phone and started scrolling through messages.

Her face became more confused.

“Wait.””

“What?”” Daniel asked.

She looked at him.

“The wedding invitations.””

“What about them?””

She turned the screen toward him.

“I didn’t order these.””

Daniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Chloe’s voice became quieter.

“The invitations were sent under your mother’s name.””

My mother froze.

I noticed it immediately.

A tiny reaction.

A flicker of fear.

“What does that mean?”” Daniel asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Chloe looked at me.

“Did you know about this?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My mother suddenly grabbed her purse.

“We need to talk privately.””

That was when I knew.

The wedding wasn’t the only thing she had been hiding.

There was something else.

Something she was desperate to keep buried.

Daniel blocked the doorway.

“No.””

He looked at our mother.

“Not this time.””

My mother’s face went pale.

“Daniel…”

He held up the invitation.

“Why were these sent from your name?””

The room went silent again.

Then my mother whispered the words that changed everything.

“Because if people knew who really paid for this wedding…”

She stopped.

Her eyes moved toward me.

And for the first time all morning, she looked afraid.

“Because the money didn’t come from your sister.””

May you like

She looked at me.

“It came from someone who was never supposed to be involved.””
