Chapter 4: The Name Hidden In The Receipts
For three seconds, nobody moved.
My mother’s words hung in the room like smoke.
“The money didn’t come from your sister,” she repeated.
Her eyes stayed fixed on me.
“It came from someone who was never supposed to be involved.””
I felt a strange coldness spread through my body.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Because suddenly, every strange thing from the past few months started lining up.
The rushed decisions.
The secret phone calls.
The way my mother always changed the subject whenever I asked about the wedding budget.
The way Daniel avoided conversations about money.
I looked at the folder in my hand.
“Open the receipts,” I said.
My mother’s expression changed.
“No.””
Just one word.
But it told me everything.
Daniel looked between us.
“Mom, what is she talking about?””
My mother stepped forward.
“Nothing.””
I laughed quietly.
“Nothing?””
I placed the folder on the table and opened it.
“You destroyed my clothes because you didn’t want me embarrassing the family.””
I pulled out the first payment record.
“You lied about who paid for the wedding.””
I pulled out another.
“You let everyone believe Daniel and Chloe had everything under control.””
Then I looked directly at her.
“So tell us the truth.””
My mother’s face tightened.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked away.
That was the first time in my entire life I saw my mother run out of excuses.
Chloe crossed her arms.
“I’m confused.””
She looked at Daniel.
“You told me your parents had savings.””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“I thought they did.””
My mother immediately turned toward him.
“Daniel, don’t start blaming me.””
The room erupted.
“Blaming you?”” Chloe said.
“You lied to me,” Daniel replied.
“I protected you,” my mother snapped.
I froze.
Protected him.
That was always her favorite excuse.
She never admitted control.
She called it protection.
She never admitted manipulation.
She called it love.
I looked at my brother.
“Protected him from what?””
My mother didn’t answer.
Daniel stared at her.
“Mom.””
She sighed.
Then she sat down.
For the first time, she looked older.
“I borrowed money.””
Nobody spoke.
“How much?”” Daniel asked.
She hesitated.
“Enough.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked at me.
“I borrowed from your father’s old business account.””
My stomach dropped.
My father’s old business account.
The account he had left behind after he passed away.
The account that was supposed to be divided between us.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“You used Dad’s money?””
My mother shook her head quickly.
“I was going to replace it.””
“With what?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
Because we all knew.
She had no plan.
The wedding was never just a wedding.
It was a performance.
A beautiful illusion built on borrowed money.
And somehow, I had been the one holding the illusion together.
Chloe picked up another document from the table.
“This says the initial deposit came from an account ending in 4821.””
She looked at me.
“Is that yours?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
Her expression changed.
“You paid after she used your father’s money?””
I swallowed.
“I didn’t know.””
That was the part that hurt.
Not just that my mother used my money.
Not just that she destroyed my clothes.
But that she had allowed me to believe I was helping.
When really, she had been covering holes in a sinking ship.
Daniel stood up.
“Mom, how long?””
My mother looked confused.
“How long what?””
“How long were you planning to hide this?””
She looked toward the floor.
“Until after the wedding.””
“Why?””
“Because once everyone saw how beautiful it was, nobody would care.””
The words were so cold that even Chloe stepped back.
Nobody would care.
That was her entire plan.
Create a perfect day.
Hide the disaster underneath.
I closed the folder.
“So that’s it.””
My mother looked at me.
“What?””
“You didn’t cut my clothes because you were worried about photos.””
Her face changed.
“You cut my clothes because you thought you could control me.””
Silence.
Daniel looked at our mother.
“Is that true?””
She didn’t respond.
And somehow, that was the answer.
A knock suddenly came from the front door.
Everyone turned.
My mother frowned.
“Who is that?””
Nobody moved.
Then the door opened.
A man in a dark suit stood there holding a large envelope.
He looked around the room.
“Is this the Carter family residence?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Yes. Who are you?””
The man looked at the papers in his hand.
Then he looked directly at me.
“Are you Emily Carter?””
I nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
He handed me the envelope.
“I was instructed to deliver this personally.””
My heart started beating faster.
“By who?””
The man hesitated.
Then he said a name I hadn’t heard in years.
“Your father.””
My fingers tightened around the envelope.
May you like
Because my father had been gone for seven years.
And yet someone had just delivered a message from him.
