Chapter 14: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t breathe.
My name was on the document.
My handwriting.
My signature.
But I had never seen it before.
Daniel looked over my shoulder.
“Emily?””
I didn’t answer.
Victoria immediately took the papers from my hand.
She examined the signature.
Her expression changed.
“This is wrong.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“This isn’t your signature.””
Relief came for half a second.
Then disappeared.
“Then how is it here?””
Nobody answered.
Michael leaned against the wall.
“Because someone wanted it to look like you approved the changes.””
My mother’s words echoed in my mind.
The wrong daughter.
I looked at Michael.
“Why would someone frame me?””
He didn’t answer.
Daniel looked furious.
“Who?””
Michael looked toward the documents.
“The person who benefited most.””
My stomach tightened.
“My mother?””
Michael said nothing.
That was the problem.
Everyone kept saying things without saying them.
I turned to him.
“You knew all this time.””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing.””
“I was waiting.””
“For what?””
“For your father’s plan to work.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“Explain.””
Michael looked at me.
“Robert knew if he confronted your mother publicly, she would destroy everything trying to protect herself.””
I looked at the papers.
“So he created evidence.””
“Yes.””
“And he involved me?””
Michael nodded.
“Because he knew you would eventually find the truth.””
I shook my head.
“But someone forged my signature.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Michael hesitated.
That hesitation told me more than an answer would have.
“Michael.””
He sighed.
“You need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Your mother wasn’t the only person who wanted control.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel looked confused.
“Then who else?””
Michael looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw pity in his eyes.
Not suspicion.
Not judgment.
Pity.
“Your sister.””
I froze.
“My sister?””
Daniel looked equally confused.
“We don’t have a sister.””
Michael’s face changed.
“You do.””
The air disappeared from the room.
“What are you talking about?””
Michael sat down.
“Before you were born, Robert had another child.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
Michael nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at our mother.
“Mom?””
She was crying.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Crying.
And that terrified me more than anything.
“You knew,” I whispered.
My mother looked at me.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
She couldn’t answer.
“When was the perfect time?””
Her silence broke my heart.
Michael continued.
“Her name is Sarah.””
I shook my head.
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
Victoria looked through the documents.
Then suddenly stopped.
“What?””
She pulled out a page.
“There’s a transfer here.””
Daniel looked.
“To Sarah Carter.””
My blood ran cold.
“She was receiving money?””
Michael nodded.
“Your father supported her.””
“Then why hide her?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“Because of me.””
Everyone looked at her.
She whispered,
“I made him choose.””
The words barely came out.
“I told him if he kept helping her, I would leave.””
I stared at my mother.
“You made him abandon his daughter?””
She cried.
“I was afraid.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice trembled.
“You were afraid of losing control.””
Nobody defended her.
Not even Daniel.
Michael stood.
“Sarah found out about the trust changes.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
“Because someone contacted her.””
“Who?””
He looked at the papers.
“The same person who forged your signature.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Where is Sarah now?””
Michael looked away.
“She’s been looking for answers.””
“And?””
He hesitated.
“She found them.””
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A photo appeared.
A woman standing outside my childhood home.
A woman I had never met.
But somehow I knew.
The next message appeared.
*Emily, I think we need to talk.*
May you like
Then another.
*Because I know who really betrayed Dad.*
