Chapter 15: The Sister I Never Knew

I stared at the photograph.

The woman looked nothing like me.

At least, not at first glance.

She had darker hair.

Sharper features.

A completely different life written across her face.

But there was something familiar.

The eyes.

My father’s eyes.

Daniel saw the picture.

“Is that her?””

I nodded.

“Sarah.””

Nobody spoke.

My entire life, I believed I was an only child.

I believed my family was complicated because of my mother, my brother, and our history.

I never imagined there was another person connected to everything.

A person my father loved.

A person my mother erased.

I replied to the message.

*Where are you?*

The response came immediately.

*The old park near your father’s office. Ten minutes.*

Daniel stood.

“I’m coming.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because I owe you the truth.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because maybe everyone in my family owed me something.

But only a few were willing to admit it.

The park was almost empty.

The sun was setting.

And sitting on a bench near the old fountain was the woman from the photo.

Sarah.

She stood when she saw us.

Her eyes immediately found mine.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered,

“You look just like him.””

My throat tightened.

“So do you.””

A sad smile appeared.

“I’ve been waiting years to hear someone say that.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I’m Daniel.””

Sarah nodded.

“I know.””

He froze.

“You know?””

She looked at him.

“I know everything about your family.””

The words were sharp.

Not angry.

Just tired.

We sat down.

Sarah looked at me.

“Your father loved you.””

I swallowed.

“I know.””

She smiled sadly.

“Do you?””

The question hurt.

Because suddenly, I wondered.

Sarah continued.

“He talked about you all the time.””

I looked down.

“He never talked about you.””

Her face changed.

“I know.””

The sadness in those two words was worse than anger.

“He wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

Sarah looked away.

“Because your mother made sure he couldn’t.””

I felt the anger rise again.

“How?””

Sarah took a deep breath.

“She told him if he supported me publicly, she would make sure everyone knew my existence.””

I frowned.

“But why was that a threat?””

Sarah looked at me.

“Because your father was afraid of hurting you.””

I didn’t understand.

“Me?””

She nodded.

“She convinced him that the truth would destroy your childhood.””

I felt tears forming.

“So he chose silence.””

“Yes.””

I looked away.

Another secret.

Another decision made for me.

Everyone kept saying they protected me.

Nobody ever asked what I wanted.

Sarah reached into her bag.

She pulled out an envelope.

“My father gave me this before he died.””

My heart stopped.

Another letter.

“What is it?””

“He told me not to open it unless something happened.””

“What something?””

Sarah looked directly at me.

“Unless your mother tried to take control of everything.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

My father’s handwriting.

Again.

Emily,

If you are reading Sarah’s letter, then the truth has finally reached you.

I stopped.

Sarah watched my reaction.

My father continued.

There are things I failed to tell both of my daughters because I was afraid my choices would hurt you.

My daughters.

The words broke something inside me.

He had two daughters.

Not one.

I continued reading.

But silence is sometimes more painful than truth.

My mother’s face appeared in my mind.

The wedding.

The clothes.

The lies.

The control.

Then came the sentence that made me freeze.

The person who altered the trust documents was not your mother.

I looked up.

Sarah was watching me.

Daniel leaned closer.

I kept reading.

Your mother helped hide the truth, but she did not create the betrayal.

My hands started shaking.

The final line was underlined.

The person responsible is someone you both trusted.

Someone who knew exactly how to make my family turn against itself.

I looked at Sarah.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“I was hoping you knew.””

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time from Victoria.

Three words.

*I found the evidence.*

Then another message appeared.

*It was inside your father’s old office.*

My heart raced.

Because I knew what came next.

The truth had been hidden for seven years.

May you like

And now, finally…

Someone had found the missing piece.
