Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Betrayal

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

I stared at Caden.

“Someone inside my company?””

He nodded slowly.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“Then tell me what you do know.””

He looked nervous.

Not like someone caught lying.

Like someone afraid of what would happen next.

“Six months ago, my mother was contacted by someone.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

Bonnie immediately looked at him.

“Caden.””

He ignored her.

“They knew about your properties. They knew about your inheritance. They knew you kept your finances private.””

I felt a chill.

Very few people knew those details.

“Who gave them that information?””

“I don’t know.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

I studied his face.

For the first time that night, I wasn’t sure if I was looking at a liar.

Or someone who had been used.

But that didn’t erase what he had done.

“You still signed.””

His shoulders dropped.

“I know.””

“You still let my mother suffer.””

His eyes filled with shame.

“I know.””

“You still stood beside your mother while she treated my family like servants.””

“I know.””

The room became quiet.

Then my mother spoke.

“Emma.””

I looked at her.

She gently touched my arm.

“Don’t let anger make you forget who you are.””

Her words stopped me.

Because she was right.

I didn’t want revenge.

I wanted the truth.

I picked up my phone.

“I’m calling the trustee.””

Caden looked alarmed.

“Emma.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“That decision was made long before tonight.””

I dialed.

After three rings, someone answered.

“Ms. Carter.””

“Jonathan, I need you to activate the emergency review clause.””

Silence.

Then:

“Is there a reason?””

I looked at Caden.

At Bonnie.

At the people who had broken my trust.

“Yes.””

My voice lowered.

“My husband and mother-in-law attempted to transfer ownership of protected assets.””

Jonathan immediately became serious.

“I’ll begin the process.””

“Also,” I added, “I need a full audit of internal access records.””

Caden looked confused.

“Why?””

I ended the call.

Then I answered.

“Because whoever helped you knew things only employees should know.””

Bonnie suddenly stood.

“This is insane.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

I pointed toward the door.

“This is accountability.””

She grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving.””

“Good.””

She stopped.

She clearly expected me to beg.

I didn’t.

“Emma, after everything, you’re just throwing family away?””

I looked at her.

“You threw away family when you made my injured mother cook for you.””

Her face hardened.

“You’ll regret this.””

I smiled sadly.

“No.””

I looked toward my mother.

“I regret not seeing it sooner.””

Bonnie left.

The front door closed.

For the first time all night, the house was quiet.

Then Caden spoke.

“Emma.””

I didn’t answer.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

The apology sounded real.

But real apologies didn’t erase real damage.

“I need you to leave.””

His face fell.

“Tonight?””

“Yes.””

“Where am I supposed to go?””

I looked at him.

“That’s the first time tonight you’ve asked what happens to you.””

He looked down.

I walked toward the door.

Caden grabbed his jacket.

Before leaving, he stopped.

“There’s one more thing.””

I waited.

“The person who contacted my mother…”

He hesitated.

“They knew something else.””

“What?””

His voice dropped.

“They knew about Donovan.””

My heart stopped.

“What does my son have to do with this?””

Caden looked terrified.

“They weren’t only trying to take your properties.””

He swallowed.

“They were trying to take control of your entire family.””

And then my phone buzzed.

A new message appeared.

Unknown number.

May you like

Only five words.

*I know what you inherited.*
