Chapter 19: The Last Betrayal

For three days, I searched for the person who opened the door for Landon.

The police investigation moved quickly.

The financial records were frozen.

The forged documents were exposed.

The attempted transfer of Donovan’s trust was officially stopped.

Landon Pierce was no longer the untouchable advisor everyone trusted.

But one question remained.

Who helped him?

Because Landon had not escaped.

He had been invited in.

And whoever did it knew our security systems, our schedules, and our family history.

I sat in my office surrounded by reports.

My mother sat across from me.

My father stood near the window.

Caden sat quietly in the corner.

None of us spoke.

For once, silence didn’t mean secrets.

It meant we were thinking.

Then Jonathan walked in.

“Emma.””

I looked up.

“Tell me you found something.””

He placed a folder on my desk.

“I did.””

My heart tightened.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

“Jonathan.””

He opened the folder.

Inside was a security report.

A single name appeared.

I stared.

“No.””

My father moved closer.

“What is it?””

I pushed the folder toward him.

He read the name.

His face changed.

Because he knew too.

Caden stood.

“Who?””

I looked at him.

“The person who helped Landon.””

I swallowed.

“Your mother.””

The room went silent.

Caden looked like someone had hit him.

“No.””

Jonathan spoke carefully.

“We traced the access code used to bypass the security system. The code was created through Bonnie’s account.””

Caden shook his head.

“She wouldn’t.””

I looked at him.

“Wouldn’t what?””

He couldn’t answer.

Because he knew.

Bonnie had already shown us who she was.

She had lied.

Manipulated.

Used people.

But this was different.

This was betrayal on another level.

“She hated me,” I said quietly.

Caden looked down.

“She loved you.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“She loved what she thought you could become.””

He closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

A few hours later, we found Bonnie.

She wasn’t hiding.

She was sitting at a small café across town, drinking coffee like nothing had happened.

When she saw us approach, she sighed.

“I knew this day would come.””

I sat across from her.

“Why?””

She looked away.

“Because I was tired.””

“Tired of what?””

“Being invisible.””

I almost laughed.

“You betrayed everyone because you felt invisible?””

She looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I leaned forward.

“I understand perfectly.””

Her expression hardened.

“You had everything.””

I shook my head.

“No. I had responsibilities.””

She looked down.

“My whole life, I watched people like your family have doors opened for them.””

“And you wanted one.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

She continued.

“When Landon approached me, he promised Caden would finally have what he deserved.””

I looked at Caden.

His face was full of disappointment.

“He used you.””

Bonnie nodded.

“I know.””

“Then why continue?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because by the time I realized what he was doing, I was already trapped.””

“How?””

She reached into her purse.

She placed a small flash drive on the table.

“He recorded everything.””

I looked at it.

“What’s on this?””

“Proof.””

She pushed it toward me.

“Proof that Landon planned everything.””

Caden stared at his mother.

“Why are you giving this to her?””

Bonnie looked at him.

“Because I finally realized something.””

“What?””

“That I spent my whole life trying to take from someone else…”

She looked at me.

“…and I destroyed my own family doing it.””

I picked up the flash drive.

“Why should I trust you?””

“You shouldn’t.””

Her answer was immediate.

“But you should listen.””

That night, we opened the files.

There were recordings.

Messages.

Plans.

Dates.

Everything.

Then we found the final recording.

Landon’s voice filled the room.

“If Bonnie succeeds, the Carter family collapses.””

A pause.

Then:

“And if she fails, she takes the blame.””

My eyes widened.

He never planned to help her.

He planned to sacrifice her.

Caden looked devastated.

“She was just another piece.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

The recording continued.

Then Landon said something that made everyone freeze.

“But the real threat is Emma.””

I stared at the screen.

“Why?””

His answer came.

“Because she still believes people can change.””

The recording ended.

I sat there quietly.

Because for the first time, I understood.

Landon’s greatest weapon wasn’t money.

It wasn’t documents.

It wasn’t manipulation.

It was convincing everyone that trust was weakness.

But he was wrong.

Trust wasn’t weakness.

May you like

Blind trust was.

And I had finally learned the difference.
