Chapter 12: The Recording From My Father
I spent the next hour searching through everything my grandfather had left behind.
Documents.
Letters.
Old photographs.
Nothing.
My father’s name appeared everywhere.
But the truth didn’t.
My mother sat quietly at the dining table.
She looked exhausted.
“Mom.””
She looked up.
“Yes?””
“Did Dad steal from the company?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t know anymore.””
That answer hurt.
Because my mother always knew everything.
Except this.
“What do you mean?””
She looked down.
“I believed what your grandfather told me.””
“But?””
“But after he died, I found things that didn’t make sense.””
“Like what?””
“Your father’s final emails.””
I froze.
“You have them?””
She nodded.
“In a box.””
She stood slowly and walked toward a cabinet.
From inside, she pulled out an old wooden box.
The edges were worn.
The lock was broken.
“I should have given this to you years ago.””
Inside were letters.
Photos.
And a small digital recorder.
My hands shook.
“What is this?””
“Your father left it for you.””
I looked at her.
“When?””
“The night before he died.””
My heart stopped.
“You told me he didn’t leave anything.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at the recorder.
“Of what you would discover.””
I picked it up.
There was only one button.
Play.
I pressed it.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
My father’s voice.
“Emma.””
I covered my mouth.
I hadn’t heard him in years.
The recording continued.
“If you’re hearing this, something went wrong.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“I need you to know one thing.””
A pause.
“I never betrayed your family.””
I looked at my mother.
She was crying.
My father continued.
“Richard Vale’s son is not who he claims to be.””
My breath stopped.
“Landon has spent years building a plan.””
The room became silent.
“He wants revenge against your grandfather.””
I listened carefully.
“He knows about the trust. He knows about the properties. He knows about Donovan.””
My hand tightened around the recorder.
“He will use people close to you.””
A pause.
“He will make them believe they are choosing power.””
My eyes closed.
Caden.
Bonnie.
Everyone.
My father’s voice became weaker.
“Emma, if you are listening to this, trust your instincts.””
Static interrupted.
Then his final words came.
“Your greatest danger will not come from your enemies.””
A long pause.
“It will come from the people who think they deserve what belongs to you.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Jonathan.
I answered.
“Emma.””
His voice sounded urgent.
“What happened?””
“We found something in Landon’s company records.””
“What?””
“A hidden account.””
My heart raced.
“How does that help us?””
“Because it contains payments.””
“To who?””
A pause.
Then:
“To Bonnie.””
I looked at my mother.
My blood went cold.
Jonathan continued.
“But Emma…”
“What?””
“There’s another payment.””
“From who?””
His voice dropped.
“From someone inside your family.””
I slowly lowered the phone.
The recording.
The messages.
The betrayal.
Everything connected.
But the one question remained.
May you like
Who else had been helping Landon?
And why did they want my family destroyed?
