Chapter 3: The Document Hidden in My Home

The silence after Bonnie’s words felt heavier than any argument.

I looked directly at Caden.

“What did you sign?””

He didn’t answer.

That was worse than a lie.

“Caden.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“It’s not what you think.””

I walked closer.

“Then explain it.””

Bonnie immediately stepped between us.

“Don’t attack him.””

I turned toward her.

“Move.””

Something in my voice made her stop.

For once, Bonnie didn’t have a response.

Caden looked uncomfortable.

“I thought it was just paperwork.””

“What paperwork?””

He hesitated.

“A property agreement.””

My heart sank.

“You signed a property agreement involving my company?””

“I didn’t know it was your company.””

“That’s exactly the problem.””

He looked frustrated.

“Emma, I was trying to help my family.””

I stared at him.

“You were trying to help your family by signing documents connected to my assets without asking me?””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it like?””

He had no answer.

My mother watched quietly from the chair.

I could see the disappointment on her face.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

That hurt more.

I walked upstairs.

“Emma, where are you going?”” Caden asked.

“To find out how much you’ve been hiding from me.””

The master bedroom was exactly how I had left it that morning.

Except now it felt unfamiliar.

I opened my desk drawer.

Inside were important documents, including copies of every major agreement connected to my properties.

I pulled out the folder.

Caden appeared at the doorway.

“Emma, please.””

I didn’t look up.

“How long?””

“What?””

“How long have you and your mother been discussing my properties?””

His silence answered.

I opened the folder.

The first document was missing.

My eyes narrowed.

“Where is the ownership transfer form?””

Caden’s face changed.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I moved some papers because Bonnie wanted to organize the house.””

I looked at him slowly.

“Bonnie had access to my office?””

“She was helping.””

I laughed once.

A cold, humorless sound.

“She was helping herself.””

Downstairs, Bonnie shouted.

“I can hear you accusing me!””

I walked back down.

She stood near the staircase, angry.

“You always thought you were better than us,” she said.

I stared at her.

“No. I thought my husband loved me.””

Her expression hardened.

“You kept secrets too.””

“Yes,” I replied.

“I kept my wealth private because I wanted a marriage built on trust.””

“And we trusted you.””

“No. You trusted what you thought I had.””

That sentence hit harder than I expected.

Caden looked between us.

“Enough.””

I turned to him.

“No. Not enough.””

I held up the folder.

“Something is missing.””

His face became pale.

“What?””

“The ownership transfer form.””

Bonnie suddenly became very quiet.

Too quiet.

I noticed.

And so did Caden.

“Mom?”” he asked.

She looked away.

“What?””

“Do you know where it is?””

“No.””

But her voice came too quickly.

I walked toward her.

“Bonnie.””

She stepped back.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

I watched her carefully.

Then my phone rang.

The number on the screen was from my company’s legal department.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?””

The attorney’s voice was tense.

“Emma, we found something unusual.””

I turned away from everyone.

“What happened?””

“There was an attempted filing this afternoon.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Filed by who?””

A pause.

Then the answer came.

“Your husband.””

I looked across the room at Caden.

He looked terrified.

The attorney continued.

“And Emma…”

“What?””

“The person who submitted the documents claimed you had already approved the transfer.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I knew I hadn’t.

Then the attorney said the one thing that made the entire room disappear.

“The documents were signed with a copy of your identity verification.””

I slowly lowered the phone.

Caden stared at me.

Bonnie stopped breathing.

May you like

And I realized this was no longer about disrespect.

Someone had tried to steal my entire life.
