Chapter 11: The Husband’s Hidden Deal

I couldn’t take my eyes off Caden.

Not Landon.

Not my mother.

Only him.

“Why did he choose you?””

Caden didn’t answer.

That was becoming his pattern.

Silence.

Avoidance.

Regret after damage was already done.

“Caden.””

He swallowed.

“I didn’t know what he wanted.””

Landon smiled.

“That’s not true.””

“Shut up,” Caden said.

The anger in his voice surprised me.

Because for once, it wasn’t directed at me.

It was directed at Landon.

I stepped between them.

“No more secrets.””

Caden closed his eyes.

Then he finally spoke.

“Before we got married, Landon approached me.””

My chest tightened.

“Before?””

He nodded.

“Two years before.””

I felt dizzy.

We had been married for four years.

“You knew him before?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“He contacted me through a business event.””

I looked at Landon.

“And you?””

Landon didn’t deny it.

“I was investigating.””

“Investigating what?””

He looked at me.

“Your marriage.””

My stomach turned.

“You investigated me?””

“I needed to know if you had weaknesses.””

The honesty was horrifying.

“And you found one.””

His eyes moved to Caden.

Caden looked ashamed.

“What did he promise you?””

I asked quietly.

Caden looked at the floor.

“Nothing.””

“Don’t lie.””

His shoulders dropped.

“He said he could help me build my own company.””

I stared at him.

“So you listened.””

“Yes.””

“Because you wanted money.””

“No.””

His answer came quickly.

“I wanted respect.””

That stopped me.

Caden looked at me.

“I was always the poor kid in the room. Everyone around you had power, connections, wealth.””

“That doesn’t excuse this.””

“I know.””

His voice broke.

“I thought I could prove myself.””

I looked at him.

“You tried to prove yourself by taking from me.””

He had no defense.

Landon interrupted.

“This is exactly what I predicted.””

I turned.

“What?””

He smiled.

“You married someone who wanted what your family had.””

Caden stepped forward.

“You manipulated me.””

Landon laughed.

“No. I gave you an opportunity.””

“You lied.””

“I told you enough truth.””

The argument became background noise.

Because suddenly I understood something.

Landon didn’t create greed.

He searched for it.

He found people with insecurity.

People who wanted more.

Then he used them.

I looked at Caden.

“Did you ever plan to tell me?””

He was silent.

That was enough.

I nodded slowly.

“Leave.””

His face fell.

“Emma.””

“Leave.””

“I can help stop him.””

“You already helped him start.””

He looked broken.

But I couldn’t let guilt replace judgment.

A few minutes later, Caden walked out.

Landon watched him leave.

“You’re making a mistake.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I picked up the folder.

“I’m removing one.””

His expression darkened.

“You think you’ve won?””

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“I think I finally know who I’m fighting.””

He smiled.

“Then you should know something.””

“What?””

“Your grandfather wasn’t the only person who left instructions.””

My blood ran cold.

“What are you talking about?””

Landon leaned closer.

“Your father left something too.””

My mother suddenly stood.

“Don’t.””

Landon looked at her.

“You knew.””

My mother’s face changed.

“You knew he would find out eventually.””

I looked between them.

“What did my father leave?””

Neither answered.

Then Landon smiled.

“A recording.””

The room went silent.

“Where?””

He stepped back.

“Somewhere only you can access.””

I stared at him.

“Why tell me?””

“Because when you hear it, you’ll finally understand.””

“Understand what?””

His expression became unreadable.

“That your father wasn’t the villain your family made him out to be.””

Then he walked away.

Leaving me with a question that had haunted my family for years.

May you like

Was my father really the betrayer?

Or had someone rewritten the story?
