Chapter 5: The Mother-In-Law’s Plan
Nobody spoke after my attorney’s words.
Bonnie’s face turned pale.
Only for a second.
Then the anger returned.
“You’re trying to frame me.””
I looked at her.
“No one mentioned framing.””
Her mouth closed.
A mistake.
A small one.
But I saw it.
Caden noticed too.
“Mom?””
Bonnie looked at him.
“Don’t look at me like that.””
“Did you sign something?””
She crossed her arms.
“I signed what your wife should have signed.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Bonnie stepped forward.
“It means someone needed to think about the future.””
I stared at her.
“You mean my future?””
“Our family’s future.””
I almost couldn’t believe her.
“Our family?””
“Yes,” she snapped.
“You think you’re the only one who matters because you have money?””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I think I matter because I’m a person.””
She rolled her eyes.
“You always had this attitude.””
“My attitude?””
“Yes. You hid your wealth. You made us feel small.””
I looked around the mansion.
The mansion she had just entered without permission.
The mansion where she had ordered my injured mother around.
“You made yourself feel small.””
Her expression turned cold.
“You don’t know what it’s like to struggle.””
I stared at her.
“You’re right.””
For a moment, she looked satisfied.
Then I continued.
“I don’t know what it’s like to manipulate someone’s trust and call it survival.””
Caden stepped forward.
“Enough.””
I looked at him.
“No. I want to hear everything.””
He looked exhausted.
“Emma…”
“Did you know?””
His eyes dropped.
That was the answer.
My chest tightened.
“How long?””
“I didn’t know the details.””
“Caden.””
He sighed.
“My mother told me there was an investment opportunity.””
I laughed quietly.
“An investment opportunity involving my properties.””
“I thought it was temporary.””
“Temporary?””
“Yes. She said we could use the assets as collateral.””
My voice became colder.
“You tried to use my properties as collateral without telling me.””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
He had no answer.
Bonnie interrupted.
“You’re acting like we stole from you.””
I looked at her.
“You attempted to transfer ownership.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“We were protecting what would eventually belong to Caden.””
The words froze me.
“Eventually?””
Bonnie didn’t realize she had revealed too much.
She continued.
“He’s your husband. Your estate would become his.””
I looked at Caden.
“Is that what you believed?””
He stayed silent.
That silence was louder than anything.
My heart broke.
Not because of the money.
Never because of the money.
Because I finally saw the truth.
Caden didn’t love my life.
He loved the life he thought he could inherit.
I walked toward the kitchen.
My mother followed.
“Emma, where are you going?””
“To make sure this ends.””
I opened a cabinet and removed a small black box.
Caden watched.
“What is that?””
I placed it on the table.
“The reason you never understood me.””
Inside were old documents.
Not property records.
Not financial statements.
Something more personal.
A letter from my grandfather.
I opened it.
“My grandfather built this company from nothing,” I said.
Bonnie looked uninterested.
Until I continued.
“He also created one rule.””
I looked directly at Caden.
“The person who inherits everything must never allow greed to control them.””
Nobody moved.
My grandfather had added a condition to my inheritance.
One that almost nobody knew.
If I ever married someone who attempted to exploit my family’s assets, the trust would immediately freeze.
Caden’s expression changed.
“What?””
I closed the box.
“That means you didn’t just betray me.””
I looked at Bonnie.
“You destroyed your own plan.””
Bonnie suddenly looked afraid.
“You’re lying.””
“No.””
I picked up my phone.
“I’m calling the trustee.””
Caden stepped forward.
“Emma, wait.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His voice lowered.
“Because there’s something you don’t know.””
The room went quiet.
“What?””
He looked at Bonnie.
Then back at me.
“My mother didn’t start this.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“Then who did?””
Caden hesitated.
May you like
And the answer shocked me.
“Someone inside your company.””
