Chapter 10: The Man Who Knew Everything

The sound of Landon’s voice behind the door sent a cold wave through the entire house.

For twenty years, that voice had represented safety.

Trust.

Family.

Now it sounded like a warning.

My mother gripped my hand.

“Don’t let him know you’re afraid.””

I looked at her.

“Mom, why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with regret.

“Because I thought keeping you away from the past would keep you safe.””

I stared at the door.

“But the past found me anyway.””

The doorbell rang again.

This time, longer.

Landon knew we were inside.

He wanted us to know he was waiting.

Caden stepped forward.

“I’ll open it.””

I stopped him.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Emma—”

“This is my house.””

My voice was calm.

“But more importantly, this is my family.””

I walked toward the door.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

When I opened it, Landon stood there.

He looked exactly the same as he always had.

Perfect suit.

Silver hair.

Calm expression.

The kind of person everyone trusted immediately.

That was what made him dangerous.

“Emma,” he said warmly.

I stared at him.

“Landon.””

His eyes moved past me.

He saw my mother.

Then Caden.

Then the security cameras.

A small smile appeared.

“Looks like things have changed.””

“You know why I’m here.””

He sighed.

“I know you’re angry.””

“Angry?””

I almost laughed.

“You threatened my son.””

His expression changed slightly.

“I never threatened Donovan.””

“You sent someone a picture of him.””

For the first time, his calm mask cracked.

Only for a second.

Then it returned.

“I think someone has been manipulating you.””

I stared at him.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to listen.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“I spent years listening to people I trusted. Look where that got me.””

Landon looked disappointed.

“Your grandfather would have wanted you to understand the bigger picture.””

“Don’t use his name.””

His expression became colder.

“Your grandfather made mistakes.””

“My grandfather protected his family.””

“Your grandfather destroyed mine.””

There it was.

The anger beneath the surface.

Finally.

The truth.

“You’re Richard Vale’s son.””

The silence confirmed it.

Landon looked at my mother.

“So she told you.””

My mother stepped forward.

“You should have stayed away.””

He smiled sadly.

“Alexis, after all these years, you still think you can protect her.””

My fingers curled.

“What did you do?””

Landon looked at me.

“I corrected an injustice.””

“You forged documents.””

“I exposed a system built on favoritism.””

“You tried to steal from my child.””

His face tightened.

“Your child inherited everything because of a name.””

I stepped closer.

“Donovan inherited because he is my son.””

“And because your grandfather decided my family deserved nothing.””

I shook my head.

“You’re blaming a three-year-old for something that happened before he was born?””

Landon looked away.

For a moment, I saw something human.

Pain.

Then it disappeared.

“I didn’t come here to argue.””

“Then why?””

He reached into his briefcase.

My security team immediately moved closer.

Landon slowly removed a folder.

“I came to show you the truth.””

He placed it on the table.

Inside were old financial documents.

My father’s signature.

My grandfather’s company records.

And evidence of missing money.

My hands trembled.

“Where did you get these?””

“From the archives.””

“Those were private.””

“Your family built an empire on secrets.””

I looked through the pages.

Some of the information was real.

Numbers.

Transfers.

Dates.

But something felt wrong.

“You altered these.””

His expression didn’t change.

“You want to believe that.””

“No.””

I looked up.

“I know that.””

For the first time, he looked surprised.

Because he realized something.

I wasn’t the same person who trusted him blindly.

“What did you do with Caden?”” I asked.

His eyes moved toward my husband.

Caden stiffened.

“I didn’t do anything.””

Landon smiled.

“Interesting.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Landon looked at Caden.

“You never told her?””

Caden’s face changed.

I turned toward him.

“Told me what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Landon spoke.

“Ask your husband why I chose him.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Caden.

His face had gone pale.

“Caden?””

He looked away.

And that was when I realized.

May you like

There was another secret.

One he had been carrying.
