Chapter 9: The Last Person I Expected
The name on Marcus’s phone was Linda Carter.
Daniel’s mother.
For several seconds, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.
Linda had been sitting at our anniversary party.
She had watched the car video play.
She had watched me discover the affair.
She had stood quietly while Daniel’s lies collapsed around him.
And she had known.
I slowly turned toward her.
“You?””
Linda’s face changed.
“Emily, please.””
That word again.
Please.
Everyone wanted mercy after they had already taken mine.
I pointed at Marcus’s phone.
“Why did Daniel send you that money?””
Linda looked at her son.
Daniel shook his head.
“Mom, don’t.””
Something inside me went completely still.
“No,” I said.
“She’s going to answer.””
Linda sat down.
For the first time since I met her seven years earlier, she looked old.
Not polished.
Not controlled.
Just tired.
“Daniel came to me months ago,” she said.
“And?””
“He told me the business was collapsing.””
Marcus folded his arms.
“That’s not all he told you.””
Linda looked at him.
“No.””
She turned back to me.
“He said there could be investigations.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did you do?””
“I helped him.””
“By taking his money?””
Linda flinched.
“He said it needed to be somewhere safe.””
I stared at her.
“Safe from whom?””
She didn’t answer.
Marcus did.
“From you.””
The room went silent.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“That wasn’t the reason.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Then tell her the reason.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
I waited.
Finally, Linda whispered, “He was afraid you would freeze the accounts if you discovered what he had done.””
I laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“So while I was planning our anniversary, the two of you were planning how to hide money from me?””
Linda’s eyes filled with tears.
“I thought I was protecting my son.””
“You were.””
I looked directly at her.
“You just didn’t care what happened to me.””
Linda lowered her head.
Daniel came toward me.
“Emily, I was going to put everything back.””
“When?””
He stopped.
“After you blamed me?””
His face changed.
I looked at Marcus.
“You said Daniel needed someone to take the blame.””
Marcus nodded.
Then he opened the folder to another page.
“Your signature wasn’t the only thing copied.””
He slid the document toward me.
My name appeared repeatedly.
Authorizations.
Guarantees.
Financial approvals.
Documents I had never seen.
My hands went cold.
Marcus pointed at the dates.
“If the company’s creditors came after him, these records would make it look like you knew about the transfers.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You were going to make me responsible.””
“No.””
His answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“That was never the plan.””
“Then why is my name here?””
“I panicked.””
“You forged my approval because you panicked?””
“I thought I could fix everything before anyone found out.””
I stared at him.
“And if you couldn’t?””
Daniel said nothing.
There it was.
The truth.
He had never needed to consciously decide to destroy me.
He only needed to save himself first.
Whatever happened to me afterward was acceptable collateral.
Sophia began crying quietly.
“I didn’t know about Emily’s name.””
I turned toward her.
“Did you know about Linda?””
Sophia hesitated.
“Yes.””
That hurt.
But differently now.
I was running out of places inside me for betrayal to land.
“Why did you sign that document?””
Sophia wiped her face.
“Daniel told me it was part of separating his personal assets from the company.””
“And you believed him?””
“At first.””
“At first?””
She nodded.
“Then I found the other records.””
“The flash drive.””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at Sophia.
“You stole private files.””
Sophia laughed bitterly.
“You used Emily’s identity.””
Then she looked at me.
“That’s when I realized everything he told me could be a lie.””
I studied her.
“Even what he told you about us?””
Her face crumpled.
“Yes.””
For the first time, I saw the affair differently.
It didn’t make Sophia innocent.
She had betrayed me.
But Daniel had built separate realities for each of us.
To me, he was a faithful husband.
To Sophia, he was trapped in a dying marriage.
To Linda, he was a frightened son who needed protection.
To Marcus, he was a business partner until the money disappeared.
Daniel didn’t simply lie.
He designed different versions of himself depending on who was standing in front of him.
My phone rang.
Unknown number again.
I almost ignored it.
Then Marcus said, “Answer.””
I put it on speaker.
“Hello?””
A woman spoke.
“Mrs. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Rachel Bennett. I represent Hale Financial Recovery.””
Daniel suddenly moved toward me.
Marcus blocked him.
Rachel continued.
“We received the materials Mr. Hale submitted. There is something you need to know before you sign anything your husband gives you.””
I looked at Daniel.
His eyes widened.
“What?””
Rachel paused.
“There’s a document scheduled to become effective tomorrow morning.””
My heart started pounding.
“What document?””
Daniel whispered, “Emily, hang up.””
I didn’t.
Rachel answered.
“A marital settlement agreement.””
The room disappeared around me.
“I never signed a settlement agreement.””
“I know,” Rachel said.
I stared at Daniel.
Rachel continued.
“And Mrs. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“The signature on it matches the forged signature on the financial guarantee.””
I looked at my husband.
Tomorrow morning, according to paperwork carrying my fake signature, my marriage was supposed to end on Daniel’s terms.
And suddenly I understood why our anniversary party had mattered so much.
May you like
Daniel had never been celebrating five years with me.
He had been counting down our final hours.
