Chapter 4: The Secret Behind Our Marriage

Nobody spoke after the message appeared.

The party guests who had come to celebrate us now looked at Daniel like they were seeing him for the first time.

Maybe they were.

Because I realized something terrifying.

I wasn’t the only person who didn’t know the truth.

Everyone believed Daniel was exactly who he appeared to be.

Successful.

Honest.

Reliable.

The perfect husband.

I had spent five years protecting an image that never existed.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you use my name?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Daniel.””

His shoulders dropped.

“I can explain.””

I shook my head.

“That’s all you ever say.””

He looked desperate.

“Emily, I was trying to protect us.””

“Protect us?””

I pointed toward the documents.

“You put me in something I didn’t agree to.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Keep your voice down.””

The words made me stop.

Not because he said them loudly.

Because he said them like he was more worried about being embarrassed than hurting me.

I stared at him.

“You’re worried about the guests hearing?””

He looked away.

And that moment broke something inside me.

For years, I had thought Daniel’s biggest strength was that he always knew what mattered.

Now I realized he only knew what mattered to him.

Sophia stepped forward.

“Emily, there’s more.””

Daniel immediately looked at her.

“No.””

She ignored him.

“I found out because he asked me for help.””

I looked at her.

“You helped him?””

Her face fell.

“At first, yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I thought he was just struggling financially. I thought he needed advice.””

She looked at Daniel.

“Then I found out he had been hiding everything from you.””

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“You’re making this worse.””

Sophia shook her head.

“No. You did that yourself.””

I watched them.

And suddenly, I wondered how long this had been happening.

Not the affair.

The lies.

The secrets.

The hidden conversations.

The fake smiles.

“How long?”” I asked.

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

“How long have you been pretending?””

His eyes softened.

“Emily…”

“How long have you looked me in the face every morning knowing you weren’t telling me the truth?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

Then my father walked toward me.

“Emily, we need to call someone.””

I nodded slowly.

Because I finally understood something.

This was bigger than a broken marriage.

This was about protecting myself.

I looked back at Daniel.

“There is one thing I don’t understand.””

He swallowed.

“What?””

“If you were hiding money problems…”

I held up the documents.

“Why involve Sophia?””

Nobody moved.

Sophia looked uncomfortable.

Daniel looked at the floor.

That was when I knew.

There was another secret.

One they both were afraid to say.

My eyes moved from one person to the other.

“You weren’t just having an affair.””

Sophia’s face turned pale.

Daniel whispered, “Emily…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Tell me the truth.””

Sophia looked like she wanted to speak.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

The sound echoed through the silent room.

He looked at the screen.

His entire expression changed.

Not guilt.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

I walked closer.

“Who is calling you?””

He slowly locked the phone.

But not before I saw the name.

A name I had never heard before.

A name that made Sophia cover her mouth.

Because she knew exactly who it was.

Daniel looked at both of us.

Then whispered:

“We have to leave. Now.””

May you like

And for the first time in five years, I realized my husband wasn’t afraid of losing me.

He was afraid of what I was about to discover.
