Chapter 7: The Visitor At The Door

The knocking stopped.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

The house that had always felt like my sanctuary suddenly felt unfamiliar.

Every wall held a memory.

Every room held a moment I thought was real.

And now I wondered how many of those moments had been built on lies.

Daniel stood frozen near the kitchen.

His face had lost all color.

I had seen him nervous before.

Before important meetings.

Before difficult conversations.

But I had never seen him look afraid of a person standing outside our door.

I walked toward him.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

His eyes met mine.

“Emily, you need to listen to me.””

I almost laughed.

Because those words were becoming a pattern.

Listen to me.

Trust me.

Let me explain.

But never the truth.

“Open the door.””

His expression changed.

“No.””

That single word made my heart sink.

Because if there was nothing to hide, he would have opened it.

Sophia stood near the table, holding her arms tightly.

“I think she deserves to know.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You’ve done enough.””

Sophia shook her head.

“No. I stayed quiet for too long.””

The knocking came again.

This time louder.

I walked to the door.

Daniel moved quickly.

“Emily, wait.””

I turned around.

“Why?””

He stopped.

Because he didn’t have an answer.

I opened the door.

A man stood outside.

Late forties.

Gray jacket.

Serious expression.

He looked past me.

Straight at Daniel.

“It's been a long time.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“Marcus.””

The name felt heavier hearing it in person.

I looked at the stranger.

“You’re Marcus Hale.””

He nodded.

Then he looked at me.

“I’m sorry we’re meeting like this.””

I didn’t respond.

Because I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

Marcus stepped inside.

Daniel immediately said, “You shouldn’t be here.””

Marcus looked around the room.

“The truth should have been here years ago.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“What do you want?””

Marcus ignored him.

He looked at me.

“I want to show you something.””

I crossed my arms.

“Another secret?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Daniel moved between us.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to stop this anymore.””

Marcus reached into his briefcase and pulled out a folder.

He placed it on the table.

“I spent two years trying to recover what Daniel took from me.””

Daniel’s voice became angry.

“You’re lying.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Am I?””

The room became silent.

Marcus opened the folder.

Inside were emails, contracts, and financial records.

I looked at the papers.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I needed to.

Marcus pointed at one document.

“Daniel created a second account without telling you.””

I looked at Daniel.

His eyes dropped.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life he controlled.

“Why?””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Because I was desperate.””

The honesty shocked me.

Not because it helped.

Because it came too late.

Marcus continued.

“He wasn’t only hiding money problems.””

I looked at him.

“What else?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he said:

“Daniel was preparing to leave.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

I looked at my husband.

“What?””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“That’s not true.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You planned everything.””

My hands started trembling.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus opened another document.

“He had already contacted a lawyer.””

I stared at Daniel.

“A lawyer?””

Daniel looked away.

“I was trying to protect you.””

The anger that rose inside me surprised even me.

“Protect me from what?””

He stayed silent.

“From the truth?””

I looked at the documents.

The affair.

The money.

The lies.

The secret plans.

Everything suddenly connected.

Daniel wasn’t trying to save our marriage.

He was preparing an escape.

Then my eyes caught something on the final page.

A date.

Three months before our anniversary.

A signature.

A name.

Not Daniel’s.

Not mine.

Sophia’s.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Sophia’s face changed.

“Emily…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You were involved in this too?””

Sophia looked like she was about to cry.

“I can explain.””

I stared at her.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

The room fell silent.

Then Marcus quietly said:

“That’s not even the worst part.””

I turned toward him.

“What could possibly be worse?””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

May you like

And his next words changed everything.

“Your husband wasn’t planning to leave you alone.””
