Chapter 6: The Truth We Built Our Lives On
I walked away from the crowd before I realized I was moving.
The music was still playing softly in the background.
The decorations were still hanging.
The cake with our names written on it was still sitting untouched on the table.
Everything looked exactly the same.
Except my entire life had changed.
I held the phone against my ear.
“Marcus, tell me the truth.””
On the other end, he was silent for a moment.
“I should have told you sooner.””
My eyes moved toward Daniel.
He stood across the room, watching me.
Waiting.
Terrified.
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because Daniel convinced me you already knew.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Another lie.
“About what?””
Marcus sighed.
“The company wasn’t just in trouble.””
I waited.
“It was built using money that wasn’t his.””
My heart dropped.
“What does that mean?””
Before Marcus could answer, Daniel suddenly appeared beside me.
He reached for the phone.
I pulled away.
“No.””
“Emily, you don’t know what he’s trying to do.””
I stared at him.
“Then explain.””
He stayed silent.
That silence was becoming his answer.
Marcus continued.
“Emily, check the property records.””
I frowned.
“What property?””
“The house.””
I looked around.
Our home.
The place Daniel and I bought together three years ago.
The place where we planned our future.
“What about it?””
Marcus said quietly:
“Your name was added because Daniel needed your credit history.””
My hands went cold.
I looked at Daniel.
“Is the house mine?””
His expression changed.
Not much.
But enough.
“Emily…”
“Is the house mine?””
He looked away.
And that was when I knew.
The house wasn’t the safe place I thought it was.
It was another secret.
I ended the call.
The room was still watching.
I didn’t care anymore.
“Everyone leave.””
Nobody moved.
I raised my voice.
“I said leave.””
My father immediately walked toward me.
My mother followed.
One by one, the guests began leaving.
The anniversary party ended without a goodbye.
Without congratulations.
Without the happy ending everyone expected.
Only Daniel, Sophia, and his mother remained.
When the doors closed, the silence felt heavier.
I placed the documents on the table.
“Start talking.””
Daniel sat down slowly.
For the first time, he looked smaller.
“I was trying to fix everything.””
I crossed my arms.
“That’s not an explanation.””
He looked at me.
“I made bad decisions.””
“You made decisions about my life without me.””
He looked down.
Sophia quietly spoke.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
That surprised me.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just regret.
Daniel looked at her angrily.
“You’re really going to stand there and act innocent?””
Sophia looked at him.
“No.””
Her voice became firm.
“I’m not innocent.””
The room went quiet.
“But I’m done protecting you.””
Daniel stared at her.
Then at me.
And suddenly, his phone buzzed again.
He looked at it.
This time, he didn’t hide the screen fast enough.
I saw the fear in his eyes.
“What now?””
He didn’t answer.
I walked closer.
“Who is it?””
Daniel slowly turned the phone around.
A new message appeared.
Three words.
Three words that made Sophia step backward.
Because she knew what they meant.
*“They found you.””*
I looked at Daniel.
“Who found you?””
He didn’t speak.
Then someone knocked on the front door.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
May you like
Daniel whispered:
“They’re here.””
