Chapter 3: The Envelope He Never Wanted Me To See
I stared at the envelope sitting on the table between us.
A few minutes earlier, I had been surrounded by people celebrating my marriage.
Now, every person in that room was watching me discover what my husband had been hiding.
My hands trembled as I reached for it.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Emily, don’t.””
The panic in his voice stopped me for a second.
Not because I trusted him.
Because I had never heard fear in his voice before.
Daniel was always the calm one.
The man who handled problems.
The man who told me everything would be okay.
But now he looked like someone watching his entire world collapse.
I picked up the envelope.
“Why shouldn’t I open it?””
Daniel looked around the room.
“Because this is between us.””
I almost smiled.
“Between us?””
I held up the envelope.
“You brought this into our anniversary party.””
Sophia looked down.
“I didn’t know how else to tell you.””
I looked at her.
“You had five years.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
The room became painfully quiet.
I opened the envelope.
Inside were printed documents.
The first page had Daniel’s name.
My eyes moved across the paper.
At first, the words didn’t make sense.
Then they did.
And suddenly, the entire room felt smaller.
“What is this?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was my answer.
I looked at him.
“What is this, Daniel?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“You don’t get to say my name like that anymore.””
Everyone stood frozen.
My father stepped closer.
“Emily, maybe we should leave.””
But I couldn’t move.
Not yet.
Because the woman who had betrayed me was now the only person willing to tell me the truth.
Sophia took a deep breath.
“Daniel didn’t just cheat on you.””
Daniel looked at her sharply.
“Stop.””
She ignored him.
“He’s been hiding financial problems for almost two years.””
A wave of confusion hit me.
“What?””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“It’s not what you think.””
I looked down at the documents again.
Bank statements.
Property records.
Loan agreements.
My stomach tightened.
“You told me the company was doing better than ever.””
“It was complicated.””
“Complicated?””
I looked at him.
“You bought a new car last month.””
Daniel stayed silent.
“You told me it was because we were finally celebrating your success.””
Sophia whispered, “He was trying to make everyone believe he was still successful.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Sophia said quietly.
“You don’t get to pretend anymore.””
That sentence shocked me.
Because for the first time, Sophia wasn’t defending herself.
She was exposing him.
I looked between them.
The two people who had destroyed my trust were now fighting each other.
And somehow, that made everything worse.
“Why?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“Why what?””
“Why lie to me?””
His expression changed.
“I didn’t want you to worry.””
I laughed softly.
A painful laugh.
“You didn’t want me to worry?””
I held up the papers.
“You let me believe our future was safe.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“I was going to fix it.””
“When?””
He stopped.
“When everything was already gone?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
The silence said enough.
Then I noticed something.
One of the documents had a date from six months earlier.
My name was on it.
My signature was supposed to be there.
But I never signed anything.
I looked closer.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“Why is my name on this?””
His face changed.
Only for a moment.
But I saw it.
Fear.
“What?””
I held up the document.
“This agreement says I approved this.””
Daniel didn’t speak.
My heart started racing.
“I never signed this.””
Sophia looked shocked.
“What?””
I turned the page.
There was my name.
My information.
My personal details.
But something was wrong.
Something was very wrong.
“Daniel…”
He took a step back.
And that was when I realized the affair wasn’t the biggest betrayal.
The kiss was only the thing that exposed him.
The real secret had been hidden much deeper.
My phone suddenly buzzed on the table.
Everyone looked at it.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
One sentence.
May you like
And it changed everything.
“Emily, ask your husband why he used your name to protect himself.””
