Chapter 8: The Plan Hidden Behind The Marriage

I couldn’t speak.

The sentence repeated in my head.

Your husband wasn’t planning to leave you alone.

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

And somehow, that scared me more than anything.

Because Daniel always had an answer.

A reason.

An explanation.

But now he was silent.

Marcus looked at me.

“He knew you would question everything eventually.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You’re twisting this.””

Marcus ignored him.

“He needed someone to take the blame if things went wrong.””

I felt a chill.

“Take the blame for what?””

Marcus looked at the documents.

“The company.””

I stared at Daniel.

“No.””

He looked away.

And that was enough.

I felt like I was watching a stranger.

Not the man who held my hand when my father was sick.

Not the man who promised me forever.

A stranger.

“Were you going to blame me?””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Emily, it wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””

My eyes filled with anger.

“That’s not an answer.””

He stepped closer.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“But you were willing to.””

He stopped.

The silence between us was unbearable.

Sophia wiped her eyes.

“I need to tell you something too.””

I looked at her.

“Of course you do.””

She accepted the anger.

“I helped Daniel hide things at first.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why are you doing this?””

She turned toward him.

“Because I’m tired of being the person who helps you destroy people.””

Those words surprised me.

Sophia took a deep breath.

“When Daniel first came to me, he told me you were already leaving him.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He said your marriage was falling apart.””

I looked at Daniel.

“That’s what you told her?””

He looked ashamed.

Sophia continued.

“I believed him.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought I was helping someone who was already abandoned.””

I shook my head.

“You believed him without asking me?””

Sophia looked down.

“I know.””

The room became quiet.

Then Marcus placed another folder on the table.

“This is why I came tonight.””

I looked at it.

“What now?””

Marcus pushed it toward me.

“Records of the accounts Daniel created.””

I opened it.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Then I saw something.

A transfer.

A large amount of money.

Transferred days before our anniversary party.

My heart stopped.

“Where did this money go?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Daniel.

“Where did this money go?””

He swallowed.

“I can explain.””

I closed the folder.

“No.””

My voice became calm.

“Not anymore.””

Daniel looked hurt.

But I was done confusing his fear with my pain.

I looked at Marcus.

“Who received it?””

Marcus hesitated.

That hesitation bothered me.

“Tell me.””

He looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“The account belongs to someone connected to your family.””

My entire body went cold.

“My family?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

I felt the room spinning.

“No.””

Daniel suddenly stepped forward.

“Emily, please.””

I turned toward him.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Marcus slowly pulled out his phone.

“I didn’t want to show you this at your anniversary party.””

He placed it on the table.

“But you need to see it.””

I stared at the screen.

A name appeared.

A name I recognized immediately.

A name that made me forget how to breathe.

Because it wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone I trusted.

Someone who had been sitting in that room with us.

Marcus looked at me and whispered:

“Emily, your betrayal didn’t start with Daniel.””

May you like

I looked at the name.

And realized the person who helped destroy my marriage had been hiding in plain sight.
