Chapter 9: The Truth Everyone Tried To Hide

I couldn’t move.

The words replayed in my mind.

“My mother didn’t die because of an accident.””

For years, I had accepted the official story.

A rainy night.

A dangerous road.

A tragic mistake.

That was what everyone told me.

That was what I forced myself to believe because the alternative was too painful.

But Evelyn stood in front of me with tears in her eyes, and suddenly every memory I had buried started coming back.

My mother’s fear.

My father’s disappearance.

The secrets everyone refused to explain.

“Who are you talking about?”” I whispered.

Evelyn looked toward the window.

“We need to leave this house.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because if they know I’m here, they’ll come.””

I stepped back.

“You’re talking like they’re watching me.””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

From Daniel.

“Claire, wherever you are, leave immediately.””

I stared at the screen.

How did he know?

I looked at Evelyn.

“You told him?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Another message appeared.

“Do not trust Evelyn.””

My chest tightened.

Everyone had a warning.

Everyone had a story.

And somehow, I was always the last person to know.

I looked at Evelyn.

“Tell me everything.””

She nodded slowly.

“Your mother discovered that Mark was using the company to hide illegal financial activity.””

I listened carefully.

“But she didn’t know how deep it went.””

“What happened?””

“She found documents showing that several people were involved.””

“Who?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then said, “People close to your family.””

My heart sank.

“Daniel?””

She looked away.

“Not at first.””

That answer bothered me.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn walked toward the old bookshelf.

She pulled out a small wooden box hidden behind the books.

“I kept this because your mother asked me to.””

Inside was a stack of old papers.

And one photograph.

My mother.

My father.

Mark.

And a younger Daniel.

I stared at the picture.

“Daniel knew my family before he met me?””

Evelyn nodded.

“That’s the part nobody wanted you to discover.””

I felt betrayed all over again.

“He told me he met me by chance.””

“Maybe he wanted to believe that.””

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Daniel was involved before he understood what was happening.””

I looked through the papers.

There were notes.

Dates.

Names.

Then I saw one name repeated over and over.

Mark Lawson.

But another name appeared beside it.

Daniel Bennett.

My hands started shaking.

“No.””

Evelyn sat down.

“Claire, your husband was not innocent when this began.””

The pain returned.

Different.

Sharper.

“Then why did he leave?””

“Because he found out Mark was planning to destroy everyone who knew the truth.””

I looked at her.

“Destroy?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Your mother tried to expose him.””

“And she died.””

Silence.

That was enough.

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Evelyn immediately stood.

“We need to go.””

I looked toward the window.

A black SUV was parked outside.

My heart dropped.

Mark.

Again.

But this time, I wasn’t the same woman who watched her husband walk away.

I grabbed the box.

“No.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“What are you doing?””

“I’m done running.””

The front door opened before I could move.

Daniel walked inside.

His eyes went straight to the papers in my hand.

“Claire.””

I stepped back.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“I know what you found.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

His face fell.

“I wanted to.””

“When?””

He looked down.

“Before I married you.””

The honesty hurt.

More than another lie would have.

“Did you love me?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Or did you love what I represented?””

He didn’t answer.

A loud crash came from outside.

Everyone turned.

The window shattered.

Not from an attack, but from something thrown through it.

A small device landed on the floor.

Evelyn’s face went pale.

“No.””

“What is it?””

She whispered:

“The backup.””

Daniel looked terrified.

“What backup?””

Evelyn stared at the device.

“The one your mother created.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Created for what?””

Evelyn answered quietly.

“To expose everyone.””

The device began flashing.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A voice I recognized immediately spoke.

My father.

“Claire…”

I held my breath.

“Dad?””

His voice was weak.

“Listen to me carefully.””

I looked at the papers.

At Daniel.

At Evelyn.

“Where are you?””

“I’m coming home.””

My heart stopped.

“Home?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Because the person who betrayed us all is someone you still trust.””

The call ended.

I looked around the room.

And realized something terrifying.

May you like

The biggest secret wasn’t who left.

It was who stayed.
