Chapter 7: The Truth My Father Buried
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The name hung in the air like a warning.
My father.
A man who had been gone from my life for almost ten years.
A man I believed had disappeared because he wanted nothing to do with us.
I looked at Daniel.
Then at Mark.
Then back at the phone in Mark’s hand.
“What does my father have to do with this?””
Mark didn’t answer immediately.
That was the first time I saw uncertainty on his face.
Not confidence.
Not control.
Fear.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Claire, you need to hear this from me.””
I turned toward him.
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“You have had years to tell me the truth.””
Daniel looked down.
“And you chose silence.””
He swallowed.
“I was scared.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I pointed toward the door.
“My husband was scared. My best friend was scared. Now this man is scared.””
I looked at Mark.
“But somehow I’m the only person who wasn’t allowed to know anything.””
Nobody argued.
Because they knew I was right.
Mark finally spoke.
“Your father wasn’t who you thought he was.””
My jaw tightened.
“Be careful.””
“I’m not trying to hurt you.””
“You’re standing in my house after my husband destroyed my life. Don’t tell me what you’re trying to do.””
Mark looked at Daniel.
“Tell her.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then he sat down.
For the first time since he left, he looked broken.
“When I met you, I didn’t tell you everything about my past.””
I crossed my arms.
“Obviously.””
“My father was involved with Mark’s company.””
I frowned.
“My father?””
Daniel nodded.
“Years before we met, your father discovered what Mark was doing.””
“What was he doing?””
“Moving money. Creating fake records. Hiding ownership.””
I looked at Mark.
He didn’t deny it.
That made my stomach twist.
“Then why is my father the villain?””
“He wasn’t,” Daniel said quietly.
The room went silent.
“He tried to expose Mark.””
I stared at him.
“Then why did he leave?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because someone made sure everyone believed he was the problem.””
A memory suddenly flashed through my mind.
I was nineteen.
My father standing at the kitchen table.
My mother crying.
Papers scattered everywhere.
“You don’t understand,” he had said.
I remembered my anger.
I remembered telling him I hated him.
I remembered him looking at me like those words broke something inside him.
I had spent years believing he abandoned us.
But what if I was wrong?
“Where is he now?”” I asked.
Daniel hesitated.
“I don’t know.””
Mark suddenly laughed.
A quiet, cold laugh.
“You two really believe that story?””
Everyone turned.
Mark shook his head.
“Daniel, you were always too emotional. Claire, you were always too trusting.””
My anger flared.
“What does that mean?””
Mark stepped closer.
“It means your husband is telling you half the truth.””
Daniel stood.
“Don’t.””
“No, she deserves to know.””
Mark looked at me.
“Your father didn’t just discover my company secrets.””
I waited.
“He took something.””
“What?””
Mark smiled.
“The original records.””
Daniel’s face changed.
I noticed.
“What records?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel whispered:
“The evidence.””
My heart started racing.
“Evidence of what?””
“Everything.””
Mark stepped forward.
“And that evidence is the reason your husband married you.””
The words hit me like a slap.
I looked at Daniel.
“What?””
“That’s not true.””
Mark continued.
“He knew your father had hidden the records somewhere. He believed marrying you would eventually lead him to them.””
My eyes filled with disbelief.
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Claire, listen to me.””
“Did you marry me because of my father?””
His silence was the only answer I needed.
The pain was different this time.
Not the pain of being abandoned.
Something worse.
The feeling that my entire marriage might have started with a lie.
I stepped back.
“You used me.””
“No.””
“You found me because of my father.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“I fell in love with you.””
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
“Before or after you realized who I was?””
Daniel looked away.
That hurt more than any confession.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Nobody moved.
I looked at the screen.
A feeling told me to answer.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a weak voice spoke.
“Claire?””
My breath stopped.
I knew that voice.
Even after ten years.
Even after all the anger.
Even after everything.
“Dad?””
Daniel and Mark both froze.
My father’s voice trembled.
“I don’t have much time.””
I grabbed the phone.
“Where are you?””
“Listen carefully.””
His breathing became heavier.
“The records Daniel and Mark are looking for…”
I waited.
“Your mother hid them before she died.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“And Claire…”
His voice lowered.
“Don’t trust either of them.””
The call suddenly cut off.
I stared at the phone.
Then slowly looked up.
May you like
Because for the first time, I realized something terrifying.
Maybe I had been searching for the wrong truth.
