Chapter 6: The Enemy Behind The Smile
The SUV door opened slowly.
A man stepped out.
He wasn’t wearing anything intimidating.
No dramatic expression.
No obvious threat.
Just an expensive suit and a calm smile.
That somehow made him more frightening.
Daniel immediately moved away from the window.
“Claire, listen to me.””
I looked at him.
“You need to leave.””
“No.””
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand enough.””
The man walked toward the house.
Rachel grabbed her bag.
“We need to go.””
I looked at her.
“Go where?””
“Somewhere he can’t control.””
Before I could answer, the doorbell rang.
The man outside spoke.
“Claire? My name is Mark Lawson.””
Daniel whispered, “Don’t open it.””
I looked at him.
“You’re telling me what to do now?””
His expression softened.
“I’m telling you because I know what he’s capable of.””
I walked to the door.
This time, I opened it.
Mark stood there smiling.
“Mrs. Bennett.””
“I’m not interested in whatever you’re selling.””
He laughed softly.
“I’m not selling anything.””
His eyes moved behind me.
When he saw Daniel, the smile disappeared for half a second.
Then it returned.
“Daniel.””
The tension between them was obvious.
Two people who knew each other too well.
“Interesting,” Mark said.
“You finally decided to tell her.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What does he mean?””
Mark ignored him.
“Claire, your husband has been under a lot of pressure.””
I stared.
“My husband?””
“Yes.””
“The same husband who disappeared?””
Mark sighed.
“I know he hurt you.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don’t pretend you care.””
Mark looked at him.
“You always were emotional.””
That sentence made Daniel angry.
“You destroyed everything.””
Mark smiled.
“No, Daniel. You destroyed everything when you got curious.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What exactly did Daniel discover?””
Mark looked at me.
“Ask him.””
Daniel didn’t speak.
I turned.
“Tell me.””
He looked exhausted.
“Mark created fake companies.””
Mark smiled.
“Careful.””
Daniel continued.
“He moved money through them for years.””
“And you have proof?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“I had proof.””
My heart sank.
“Had?””
Mark answered for him.
“Your husband is very dramatic.””
I looked back at Mark.
“Why are you here?””
His smile faded slightly.
“To help you.””
I almost laughed.
“Help me?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“By showing you who Daniel really is.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Mark reached into his coat and pulled out a folder.
He held it toward me.
“I think you deserve the truth.””
I didn’t take it.
“What is that?””
“Evidence.””
“Of what?””
Mark looked directly at Daniel.
“Ask your husband why your marriage certificate was almost never valid.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Daniel.
“What is he talking about?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
And that scared me more than anything.
“Daniel.””
He finally spoke.
“Claire…”
His voice cracked.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
He looked away.
“Before I left.””
I felt my anger rising.
“You keep saying you were protecting me.””
Daniel whispered:
“Because if you knew the truth about me, you would never have married me.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Mark watched silently.
Almost enjoying it.
I looked at Daniel.
“What truth?””
He opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, Mark’s phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
Then his expression changed.
For the first time, he looked worried.
“What is it?”” Daniel asked.
Mark didn’t respond.
He looked directly at me.
Then he said:
“Claire… someone else knows everything.””
I froze.
“Who?””
Mark slowly lowered the phone.
May you like
And whispered a name I never expected to hear.
“Your father.””
