Chapter 8: The Secret Hidden In My Mother's House

Nobody spoke after the call ended.

The silence was unbearable.

My father was alive.

He knew about the records.

And he had just warned me not to trust Daniel or Mark.

Two men standing in front of me.

Two men who had already lied.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you know my father was alive?””

His face changed immediately.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

I noticed.

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Then why didn’t you look surprised when he said your name?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Mark watched the argument quietly.

Almost like he was waiting for something.

That bothered me.

“What are you waiting for?”” I asked him.

He smiled slightly.

“For you to realize everyone around you has been using you.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Why should I listen to you?””

He stopped.

Because he knew he had no answer.

The next morning, I drove to my childhood home.

The house had been empty since my mother passed away.

Nobody had touched it.

Nobody had entered it.

Except now I wondered if someone had been searching.

The old wooden door creaked when I opened it.

The smell hit me immediately.

Dust.

Old books.

Memories.

I walked through the rooms slowly.

Everything looked exactly the same.

The family photos.

The furniture.

The small marks on the walls where I grew up.

Then I entered my mother’s bedroom.

My father’s words repeated in my head.

“Your mother hid them.””

I searched every drawer.

Every cabinet.

Nothing.

For hours, I found nothing.

Until I noticed something strange.

A painting above the bed.

It was crooked.

My mother hated crooked things.

She used to fix picture frames immediately.

I removed it from the wall.

Behind it was a small envelope taped to the back.

My hands shook.

Inside was a key.

And a note.

Only one sentence.

“If Claire finds this, she is ready.””

My heart pounded.

Ready for what?

The key had a small tag attached.

A number.

214.

I knew that number.

It was the old storage unit my mother rented years ago.

I drove there immediately.

The storage facility manager looked surprised.

“Claire Bennett?””

“Yes.””

“You haven’t been here in years.””

“I need access to unit 214.””

He checked the system.

Then frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“What?””

“It was opened recently.””

My stomach tightened.

“By who?””

He looked at the screen.

“I can’t tell you without authorization.””

I pulled out my ID.

After several minutes, he finally gave me the information.

The person who accessed the unit was listed.

My hands went cold.

Because the name was not Daniel.

Not Mark.

Not Rachel.

It was my mother.

But my mother had been dead for years.

“That’s impossible,” I whispered.

The manager looked uncomfortable.

“There’s more.””

“What?””

“The unit wasn’t just opened.””

He handed me a paper.

“It was cleared out yesterday.””

Yesterday.

The same day Daniel left.

Someone knew.

Someone was always one step ahead.

I drove home with the key still in my hand.

When I arrived, the front door was slightly open.

My heart raced.

I never left it that way.

I stepped inside carefully.

“Hello?””

No answer.

Then I heard something upstairs.

A floorboard creaking.

Someone was inside.

I grabbed my phone and called 911.

But before I could speak, a voice came from the hallway.

“Claire.””

I froze.

A woman stepped into view.

Not Rachel.

Not anyone I expected.

She looked older.

Tired.

But familiar.

I stared at her face.

Because I had seen that face before.

In old photographs.

My mother’s closest friend.

The woman who disappeared after my mother died.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

I couldn’t move.

“Who are you?””

She took a shaky breath.

“My name is Evelyn.””

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your mother didn’t die because of an accident.””

My blood ran cold.

“What are you saying?””

Evelyn looked toward the locked door behind her.

May you like

Then whispered:

“She was trying to expose the same people who are standing in your life right now.””
