Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Running Away
The car outside my house stayed there for almost a full minute.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Rachel stood frozen beside the window, staring through the curtain with fear in her eyes.
I had seen Rachel scared before.
But never like this.
“Who is it?”” I whispered.
She didn’t answer.
“Rachel.””
Her lips parted.
“Daniel.””
My heart dropped.
“He followed you?””
She shook her head quickly.
“No. That’s the problem.””
I looked toward the driveway.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel grabbed the envelope from my hand.
“Claire, you need to understand something. Daniel isn’t the person controlling everything.””
I stared at her.
“Then who is?””
Before she could answer, there was a knock on the door.
Not loud.
Not angry.
Almost polite.
That made it worse.
I stepped toward the entrance.
Rachel grabbed my arm.
“Don’t.””
“Why?””
“Because if he knows I told you, we’re both in danger.””
I pulled away.
“You already dragged me into this.””
The knocking came again.
A calm voice followed.
“Claire, I know you’re home.””
Daniel.
My hands curled into fists.
A month ago, hearing his voice would have made me cry.
Now it only made me angry.
I opened the door but kept the chain locked.
Daniel stood there wearing a dark coat, looking nothing like the man who walked away.
He looked nervous.
Not confident.
Not victorious.
Nervous.
“Claire.””
“What do you want?””
His eyes moved past me.
Then he saw Rachel.
His expression changed.
“You told her.””
Rachel stepped back.
“Daniel, it’s over.””
He laughed quietly.
“No. You have no idea what you’ve done.””
I stared at him.
“Explain.””
He looked at me.
For a second, I saw hesitation.
Then he said, “I never wanted this.””
I almost laughed.
“You left your family.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
The words were so unbelievable that I didn’t know whether to be angry or confused.
“Protect me?””
“Yes.””
“By stealing my money? Forging my signature? Threatening me?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“You found the documents.””
“Enough to know you lied.””
He looked down.
Then he whispered, “You don’t know the whole story.””
“Then tell me.””
He glanced around the neighborhood.
“Not here.””
“No.””
“Claire—”
“No. You walked away. You don’t get to appear at my door and decide when I hear the truth.””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“I found out something about my business partner.””
I frowned.
“What business partner?””
His eyes moved to the envelope in my hand.
“Who gave you that?””
“Answer my question.””
He hesitated.
Then said, “Mark Lawson.””
The name meant nothing to me.
“Who is that?””
Daniel looked genuinely afraid.
“The man who helped me build the company.””
I crossed my arms.
“And?””
“And the man who has been secretly moving money through fake accounts.””
I stared at him.
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
“It explains everything.””
He stepped closer to the door.
“When I discovered what Mark was doing, I tried to expose him.””
“Then why leave?””
“Because Mark knew.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Knew what?””
“That I found out.””
The street became silent.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“He threatened me.””
Rachel shook her head.
“You’re leaving out the part where you used Claire as a shield.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Rachel, you don’t understand.””
“No, I understand perfectly.””
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Daniel made everyone believe he was disappearing because he wanted a new life.””
She swallowed.
“But he was trying to make Mark think he had control.””
I stared at Daniel.
“You used me.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I was trying to keep you safe.””
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“You made me believe my husband abandoned me.””
“I had no choice.””
“You always had a choice.””
Daniel looked away.
And that was when I noticed something.
He wasn’t acting.
He really was scared.
But fear didn’t erase what he had done.
“What was on that document?”” I asked.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“Claire…”
“What was hidden before we married?””
He didn’t answer.
That silence told me enough.
Rachel stepped forward.
“You need to tell her.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then he said something that changed everything.
“Before I met you, I worked for Mark.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“I helped him build the company.””
“And?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Then I discovered the company wasn’t built the way everyone thought.””
A car engine suddenly started outside.
All three of us turned.
A black SUV was parked across the street.
Daniel’s face lost all color.
“No.””
Rachel whispered.
“He’s here.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Who?””
Daniel stared through the window.
May you like
Then he said:
“Mark.””
