Chapter 2: The Woman In The Photograph
I stared at the photograph until my eyes started burning.
It was Daniel.
Standing outside a restaurant.
Smiling.
But he wasn’t alone.
A woman stood beside him.
She was holding his arm.
And the worst part wasn’t that she was there.
It was that Daniel looked happy.
A kind of happy I hadn’t seen in years.
I turned the photograph over again.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
“Find the truth before he takes everything.””
My first instinct was to call Daniel.
My fingers hovered over his name.
Then I stopped.
Because if he was hiding something, I couldn’t warn him that I knew.
I needed answers first.
The next morning, I called my best friend, Rachel.
She arrived at my house within twenty minutes.
The second she saw my face, she knew something was wrong.
“Claire, what happened?””
I handed her the photo.
Her expression changed immediately.
“Who is this?””
“I don’t know.””
“Have you seen her before?””
I shook my head.
Rachel looked closer.
“Where did you get this?””
“Inside the divorce papers.””
She slowly lowered the picture.
“Inside the papers?””
“Yes.””
“That means someone wanted you to find it.””
I looked toward the window.
The driveway where Daniel used to park his truck was empty.
“He planned everything before leaving.””
Rachel sat beside me.
“Claire, you need to be careful.””
“I need to know the truth.””
Later that afternoon, I went through old files in Daniel’s office.
It felt wrong.
Like I was entering a place I wasn’t supposed to be.
But after fifteen years together, I knew every drawer, every shelf, every hiding spot.
Except one.
Behind a row of business books was a small locked box.
I had never seen it before.
My hands trembled as I picked it up.
Inside was not money.
Not jewelry.
Not anything valuable.
There were printed emails.
Hotel receipts.
And dozens of photographs.
All showing Daniel with the same woman.
My chest tightened.
This wasn’t new.
This had been happening for a long time.
Then I found something that made everything worse.
A document with Daniel’s signature.
I read the first line.
“Transfer of ownership agreement.””
My breath caught.
The date was from six months ago.
Daniel had been preparing to move the company.
Our company.
The one we built together.
I grabbed my phone and called Rachel.
“Come back.””
Her voice immediately became serious.
“What happened?””
“I found something.””
“What?””
“He was planning this.””
I looked at the documents spread across the desk.
“He wasn’t just leaving me.””
A long silence followed.
“What do you mean?””
“He was trying to take everything.””
That evening, Emma came home from school and found me sitting in Daniel’s office.
She stopped at the doorway.
“Mom?””
I quickly covered the papers.
“What are you doing?””
I forced a smile.
“Just sorting some things.””
She looked at me carefully.
“Is Dad coming back?””
That question hurt more than anything.
“I don’t know, Emma.””
She swallowed.
“I heard him talking to someone before he left.””
My heart stopped.
“What did he say?””
Emma looked nervous.
“I don’t know if I should tell you.””
“Sweetheart, please.””
She sat down slowly.
“He said, ‘Once Claire signs everything, there won’t be anything connecting me to this place anymore.’”
The room went silent.
A cold feeling moved through my entire body.
“Who was he talking to?””
Emma looked toward the floor.
“I don’t know.””
“Emma, did you see the person?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
My voice became quieter.
“Who was it?””
Before she could answer, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
“Claire Bennett?””
“Yes?””
“You don’t know me, but I think you deserve to know why your husband really left.””
I stood frozen.
“Who are you?””
The woman paused.
Then she whispered:
“I’m the woman Daniel told you never existed.””
The call ended.
And a second later, a message appeared on my phone.
A photo attachment.
It was a picture of Daniel.
But this time, he wasn’t with the woman from the restaurant.
He was standing beside someone else.
Someone I knew.
Someone who had been in my house many times.
Someone who had comforted me after Daniel walked away.

My hands started shaking as I read the name attached to the photo.
Rachel.
