Chapter 4: The Truth Behind The Disappearance

I didn’t sleep after that message.

I sat beside Emma’s bedroom door until sunrise, listening to her breathe.

The fear wasn’t for me anymore.

It was for my daughter.

Daniel knew exactly where to hurt me.

And that was when I realized something.

The man who left our family was not trying to escape.

He was trying to control what happened next.

The next morning, I drove straight to Daniel’s office.

The receptionist looked surprised when she saw me.

“Claire? I thought you and Daniel were handling everything through lawyers.””

“I need to see his files.””

Her expression changed.

“I’m not sure I can allow that.””

I placed Melissa’s business card on the desk.

“You can either cooperate, or my attorney can request everything officially.””

The woman swallowed.

“His office is upstairs.””

Daniel’s office looked exactly the same.

The same desk.

The same expensive chair.

The same family photo sitting beside his computer.

Except now, I saw it differently.

It wasn’t a memory.

It was a performance.

I opened drawers carefully.

Most were empty.

Too empty.

He had cleaned everything before leaving.

But people always forget something.

Behind the bottom drawer, I found a small USB drive taped underneath.

My hands went cold.

I took it straight to Melissa.

An hour later, we sat in her office while she opened the files.

The first few documents were boring.

Invoices.

Business records.

Then she stopped.

“Claire.””

Her voice changed.

“What?””

She turned the screen toward herself.

“I think you need to see this.””

“What is it?””

“A list of payments.””

I looked closer.

There were transfers made every month.

Same amount.

Same account.

Same name.

I recognized the company.

The one Daniel sent money to.

“Who owns it?””

Melissa typed quickly.

Then she looked up.

“Claire…”

“What?””

“It’s registered under your name.””

I felt like the air disappeared.

“That’s impossible.””

“It shouldn’t exist unless someone used your information.””

I stared at the screen.

Someone had created a company pretending to be me.

And Daniel had been moving money into it.

“Why would he do that?””

Melissa leaned back.

“Because if the company is connected to you, he could make it look like you were the one hiding money.””

My hands tightened.

“He was planning to blame me.””

“Yes.””

The realization hit harder than the divorce.

Daniel wasn’t leaving because he was unhappy.

He was building a story.

A story where he was the victim.

And I was the person everyone would blame.

That evening, I returned home to find Rachel standing outside my front door.

I almost didn’t recognize her.

Her eyes were red.

Her face looked exhausted.

“Claire, please.””

I stopped several feet away.

“You have five minutes.””

She nodded.

“I deserve that.””

“Why?””

Rachel looked down.

“Because I lied to you.””

The words hurt more because she admitted them.

“How long?””

She closed her eyes.

“Two years.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Two years?””

“I never planned for this to happen.””

“Then what did you plan?””

Rachel wiped away a tear.

“Daniel came to me because he said he needed someone who understood you.””

I laughed.

“Understood me?””

“He told me your marriage was already over.””

“And you believed him?””

“At first.””

She looked ashamed.

“Then I found out the truth.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Daniel threatened me.””

I stared at her.

“With what?””

Rachel reached into her bag.

She pulled out an envelope.

“I found this after he left.””

I didn’t move.

“What is it?””

“Proof that Daniel wasn’t just hiding money.””

She handed it to me.

Inside was a document.

A name.

A date.

And a signature.

My stomach dropped when I saw it.

Because it wasn’t about money.

It wasn’t about the house.

It was about something Daniel had hidden since before we were married.

Rachel looked at me.

“Claire, there’s something you need to know about Daniel.””

I looked at the document again.

“What?””

Her voice became a whisper.

“Your husband didn’t choose to leave you.””

I looked up.

“He was running from someone.””

Before I could ask who, a car pulled up outside.

Rachel’s face changed.

She stepped back from the window.

“Oh no.””

“What?””

May you like

She looked terrified.

“Claire… he found me.””
