Chapter 9: Beneath the Telescope
The old observatory stood beneath a canopy of oak trees, its stone walls darkened by decades of rain.
Adrian remembered climbing the narrow staircase as a boy, carrying a flashlight and a notebook while his mother taught him the names of constellations. He remembered the warmth of her hand around his, the sound of her laughter, and the way she would pretend that every falling star was a wish waiting to be granted.
Now he approached the building with two officers positioned beyond the tree line and Daniel monitoring the security feeds from a vehicle parked down the road.
Serena had insisted on coming.
“I won't stay behind while another secret about your mother is uncovered,” she said.
Adrian had argued, but she had met every objection with the same unyielding expression.
Finally, he had agreed to let her accompany him as long as she stayed behind him and followed Daniel's instructions.
The observatory door was unlocked.
Inside, dust covered the furniture. The old telescope pointed toward the domed ceiling, and a faint smell of damp wood lingered in the air.
Adrian stepped toward the instrument.
“Beneath the telescope,” he murmured.
He crouched and examined the circular platform. One section of the wooden floor had been replaced more recently than the others. He pressed against it, and a small panel shifted.
Inside lay a metal box.
The lock opened with the brass key Serena had recovered from the portrait.
Adrian lifted the lid.
There were no stacks of money, no jewelry, and no dramatic confession written in blood-red ink.
Instead, he found a series of documents, a small audio recorder, and a sealed letter addressed to him in his mother's handwriting.
He opened the letter first.
My dearest Adrian,
If you are reading this, I have failed to protect you from the truth. I wanted to believe your father could still choose what was right, but I have finally accepted that the man I married is capable of terrible things.
You must understand something. Richard's crimes began long before you were old enough to notice. I helped him build the foundation because I believed it would allow us to support families who needed help. When I discovered that he was using it to conceal illegal payments, I confronted him.
He told me I was confused.
When I refused to be silenced, he told me I was dangerous.
Adrian's hands trembled.
The letter continued.
I do not know whether Richard intends to hurt me. But I know he has been speaking to Thomas about making my concerns disappear. I have made copies of the records and hidden them here.
There is one more thing you must know. The person who first warned me about Richard was not your uncle.
Adrian stopped.
He read the sentence again.
It was Serena.
He looked up at his wife.
Serena's face had gone pale.
“What does that mean?”” he asked.
She lowered her eyes.
“I found the records first.””
“When?””
“Months before your mother died.””
Adrian stared at her.
“You knew what my father was doing?””
“I knew something was wrong. I worked with your mother to trace the payments. She trusted me because I had no financial interest in the company, and because I could recognize the names of charities that had never received the money recorded in their accounts.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Serena's voice cracked.
“Because your mother asked me not to. She said she wanted to confront Richard herself, and she believed she could persuade him to stop.””
Adrian looked back at the letter.
“Did she know she was in danger?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't she leave?””
Serena swallowed.
“Because she believed Richard would come after you. She thought staying close to him gave her a chance to protect you.””
Adrian felt anger rise, followed by a terrible wave of grief.
His mother had not been oblivious to her husband's cruelty. She had been fighting him quietly while trying to shield her son.
And Serena had carried that knowledge alone for years.
“You should have told me,” he said.
“I wanted to. But after your mother died, Richard warned me that if I revealed what we had found, he would make sure you lost everything. He showed me copies of confidential medical records and claimed he had enough influence to make any accusation disappear.””
“So you kept quiet.””
“Yes.””
Serena looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
Adrian turned away.
He understood fear. He understood coercion. He understood that people could be forced into silence by threats they could barely endure.
But understanding did not erase the hurt.
“Was there anything else you didn't tell me?””
Serena hesitated.
That hesitation frightened him more than any answer could have.
“Yes,” she whispered.
“Your mother didn't die immediately after the hospital visit.””
Adrian turned back.
“What?””
“She was discharged. She came home for two days. Then she called me and said she had found something in Richard's private files. She wanted to meet me at the observatory.””
“Did you meet her?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Serena wiped her cheeks.
“She arrived frightened. She said Richard had discovered the copies. She gave me the brass key and told me to keep it hidden. Then she left.””
“And afterward?””
“Richard told everyone she had been readmitted to the hospital. Two days later, he announced her death.””
Adrian stared at her.
“You saw her alive before she died.””
“Yes.””
“Did she seem ill?””
Serena closed her eyes.
“No. She was exhausted, but she wasn't dying.””
A sound came from the doorway.
Both of them turned.
Richard Bennett stood in the entrance, his silver hair damp from the rain. He held no weapon. He wore the same immaculate suit he had worn to the wedding, but his face had lost its usual composure.
Behind him stood Vanessa.
She looked directly at Adrian.
“I told you the truth was complicated.””
Adrian rose slowly.
“You have ten seconds to explain why you're here.””
Richard glanced at the open box.
“Put the documents down, Adrian.””
“No.””
“Those records belong to the family.””
“They belong to the truth.””
Richard sighed.
“You have no idea what those documents could do.””
“They could prove you murdered my mother.””
Richard's face tightened.
“You think I wanted Eleanor dead?””
“I think you hid the circumstances of her death. I think you paid to imprison Serena. And I think you've spent thirteen years making sure no one could prove what you did.””
For the first time, Richard looked old.
Not powerful. Not untouchable.
Just old.
“You don't understand what happened that night,” he said.
“Then tell me.””
Richard looked toward Vanessa.
She folded her arms.
“Don't look at me,” she said.
“You promised me this would be finished.””
Adrian's gaze sharpened.
“You promised her what?””
Vanessa's composure began to crack.
Richard raised a hand.
“Enough.””
“No,” Adrian said.
“Nobody tells anyone to be quiet anymore. Not in this family.””
He turned to Vanessa.
“What did my father promise you?””
Vanessa looked at him with an expression that mingled fury and something close to desperation.
“He promised me control of the foundation. He said once Serena was gone, you would eventually marry someone who understood the family business. I was supposed to be that person.””
“You were his choice?””
“I was the person who could fix what your mother and Serena threatened to expose.””
Adrian looked at his father.
“You used Vanessa to get to me.””
Richard said nothing.
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“And he used me to get to you. Don't imagine I was the only person being manipulated.””
“You imprisoned Serena,” Adrian said.
“I was told she would be held temporarily. Richard said she had information that could ruin us. I agreed to help because I thought it would be a few days.””
Serena stepped forward.
“A few days? You threatened my daughter.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“I never wanted to hurt Chloe.””
“You sent people to photograph her in her bedroom!””
“I needed leverage!””
The words burst from her before she could stop them.
Silence filled the observatory.
Adrian stared at her.
Vanessa pressed her lips together, realizing what she had admitted.
“You have no idea what it's like to spend your entire life being told you're almost good enough,” she said.
“Richard promised me a future. He said you would never question the arrangements if everything appeared normal.””
“So you decided my wife and daughter were obstacles.””
“I decided I wasn't going to be discarded after doing his dirty work.””
Richard stepped toward her.
“Vanessa, stop talking.””
She rounded on him.
“You stop! You promised me the trust. You promised me the company shares. You promised that once Adrian signed the papers, I'd never have to worry about money again.””
Adrian understood.
The wedding had been the final piece of their plan. Once he signed the trust documents, Vanessa would have gained financial control while Richard retained influence behind the scenes.
Serena's return threatened the entire arrangement.
“Why did you take her from the house?”” Adrian asked.
Vanessa looked toward the door.
“Because Thomas told me Richard was preparing to abandon us both. He said if I wanted to survive, I had to get the notebook before the police found it.””
“Where is Thomas now?””
“Under arrest, I assume.””
Adrian watched her carefully.
“And the doctor?””
Vanessa's eyes flickered.
That was all the confirmation he needed that she knew more than she was admitting.
Before he could question her further, Daniel's voice crackled through his earpiece.
“Adrian, we have a problem. The police have arrived at the estate. Your father has issued a statement claiming you stole confidential documents and assaulted him.””
Richard lifted his chin.
“I warned you that your actions would have consequences.””
Adrian looked at the documents in his hands.
“Then let the police hear everything.””
He reached for the audio recorder in the box.
Richard moved suddenly.
He lunged toward the table, knocking the metal box to the floor. Documents scattered across the boards.
Serena shouted.
Adrian caught his father by the arm.
“Don't!””
Richard struggled, and the two men crashed against the telescope platform.
Vanessa screamed as the telescope toppled, striking the floor with a deafening crash.
Then the audio recorder activated.
A woman's voice filled the observatory.
Eleanor Bennett.
“If anything happens to me, Richard, I want you to know that I recorded our conversation.””
Richard froze.
Eleanor's voice continued, clear and steady.
“You told me that if I exposed your accounts, you would make sure Adrian never learned what kind of man his father really was.””
A pause followed.
Then Richard's younger voice answered.
“You don't understand what I've done to keep this family alive.””
Eleanor replied with a sentence that silenced everyone in the room.
“I'm not talking about the money, Richard. I'm talking about the child.””
Adrian slowly released his father's arm.
The recording continued.

And what Eleanor said next revealed that the deepest secret in the Bennett family had nothing to do with the foundation, the missing money, or even her death.
It had to do with Adrian himself.
