Chapter 10: The Truth Beneath the Roses

The recording crackled as Eleanor Bennett spoke again.

“Adrian deserves to know who he is.””

Richard's recorded voice sounded furious.

“He is my son.””

“No, Richard. He is the child you agreed to protect.””

Adrian stood motionless.

Serena had gone completely still beside him. Vanessa's face drained of color, while Richard stared at the recorder as though it were a weapon pointed directly at his heart.

On the recording, Eleanor continued.

“You promised me that you would never use him to cover your crimes. You promised that when he was old enough, he would have the right to know the truth.””

Richard's voice dropped.

“If you tell him, you will destroy everything.””

“You destroyed it when you decided the truth belonged to you.””

The recording ended with the sound of a chair scraping across the floor.

Then silence.

Adrian looked at his father.

“What was she talking about?””

Richard's lips parted, but no answer came.

“Father. What did my mother mean?””

Richard straightened his jacket, reaching for the last scraps of authority he could still command.

“This recording is incomplete.””

“Then complete it.””

“You're upset. You're injured. You have been manipulated by Serena and Vanessa, and you're allowing a collection of old recordings to dictate your future.””

Adrian stared at him.

“Did you kill my mother?””

Richard's face hardened.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“Then why did she say you were hiding the truth about me?””

Richard looked toward the doorway.

Outside, the sound of approaching vehicles grew louder.

He knew the police were coming. He knew the evidence was no longer confined to a room beneath his own house.

And for the first time, Adrian saw something in his father's eyes that no amount of money could conceal.

Fear.

“Eleanor discovered that the foundation was being investigated,” Richard said.

“She wanted to report everything. I told her we could resolve it privately.””

“You falsified her medical records.””

“I was protecting the family.””

“You imprisoned Serena.””

“I was protecting the family.””

“You used Vanessa to steal from your own son.””

Richard's voice rose.

“Everything I did was to protect what your grandfather built!””

Adrian stepped closer.

“No. You did it because you couldn't bear the thought of losing control.””

Richard looked at him with open contempt.

“You think you're different from me? You built your company using the same principles I taught you. You learned to negotiate, to dominate, to win.””

“I learned those things from you. I learned what they cost from everyone you hurt.””

Serena moved beside Adrian.

“Tell him the truth about Eleanor,” she said.

Richard's gaze snapped toward her.

“You have no right to speak about her.””

“I was there when she gave me the key. I saw her two days before she died. She wasn't dying. You told everyone she was.””

Richard's composure fractured.

“You have no idea what she was suffering.””

“Then explain the toxicology report.””

He said nothing.

Adrian felt his hands shaking.

“Did you poison my mother?””

Richard stared at him for a long moment.

Then he whispered, “I didn't intend for her to die.””

The words seemed to drain all the air from the observatory.

Adrian took a step backward.

“What did you do?””

Richard's eyes glistened, but his expression remained stubborn.

“She found the accounts. She threatened to expose me. I gave her medication to calm her down. I thought it would make her sleep.””

“What medication?””

“I don't remember.””

“Was it prescribed?””

Richard looked away.

Adrian understood then that his father was not about to offer a confession that could be neatly contained in a single sentence. He would reveal only what he thought he could survive admitting.

“You altered her medical records,” Adrian said.

“You stopped the investigation. You let me believe she died naturally.””

Richard lowered his head.

“Yes.””

“And when Serena discovered the same crimes, you locked her away.””

“I never wanted Serena dead.””

“You wanted her silent.””

Richard did not deny it.

Adrian looked at the man who had taught him to tie his shoes, helped him through school, and sat beside him at his mother's funeral.

He had spent years believing that grief was something he had inherited from the world.

Now he understood that some of it had been placed in his hands by the very person who claimed to protect him.

The sound of police officers entering the observatory broke the silence.

“Richard Bennett,” an officer called, “step away from the table.””

Richard looked toward Adrian.

“Tell them this is a family matter.””

Adrian's voice was steady.

“It stopped being a family matter when you made it your prison.””

The officers approached.

Richard did not resist when they took his arms, but as they led him toward the door, he turned one final time.

“You'll regret this,” he told Adrian.

“Everything your grandfather built will fall apart. The company, the estate, the reputation. You'll have nothing left.””

Adrian looked at Serena.

Then he thought of Chloe, who had spent her childhood believing her mother had abandoned her.

“Then I'll build something honest.””

Richard was led outside.

Vanessa remained beside the broken telescope, staring at the floor. When the officers approached her, she lifted her hands without being asked.

“I want a lawyer,” she said.

“You'll have one,” Adrian replied.

She looked up at him.

“Do you hate me?””

Adrian considered the question.

“I hate what you did. I hate that you used my daughter. I hate that you turned my wedding into another opportunity to hurt my family.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“But I never wanted Chloe to suffer.””

“Wanting something doesn't erase what you chose to do.””

The officers escorted her away.

For several minutes, Adrian stood in the silent observatory with Serena.

Then she touched his injured arm.

“We should go home.””

He nodded.

“Home,” he repeated, as if he were learning the word again.

The investigation lasted months.

The recordings, financial records, and medical documents gave prosecutors enough evidence to charge Richard with multiple crimes, including unlawful confinement, fraud, and conspiracy. Thomas faced additional charges connected to Serena's kidnapping and the destruction of evidence. Vanessa's role in the scheme was documented through her messages, financial transfers, and recorded admissions.

The question of Eleanor's death remained more complicated. Investigators established that her medical records had been altered and that the original toxicology findings had been suppressed. Richard's confession and the surviving records became central to the inquiry, but the precise circumstances of her final hours required further forensic review.

Adrian refused to use his wealth to influence the investigation.

He turned over the company's records, cooperated with independent auditors, and resigned temporarily from several foundation positions while the board reviewed the accounts.

Some investors withdrew.

Some friends disappeared.

Newspapers printed photographs of the Bennett family beneath headlines that reduced thirteen years of pain to a scandal.

Adrian let them.

For the first time, he understood that protecting a reputation could become another way of protecting a lie.

Serena received medical treatment and began the long process of rebuilding her life. Some nights she woke screaming, convinced she could hear the lock on the underground door turning. Adrian would sit beside her until she recognized the room around her.

He never told her to forget.

He never asked her to hurry.

He simply stayed.

And Chloe slowly learned that her mother could leave the room without disappearing forever.

One afternoon, several months after the wedding, the three of them sat in the garden beneath the old oak tree.

Chloe was drawing a picture with colored pencils while Serena read beside her. Adrian watched them from the terrace, holding three cups of lemonade.

“Daddy,” Chloe called, “come look!””

He crossed the lawn.

On the page, three figures stood beneath a bright yellow sun. One was tall, one had long dark hair, and the smallest held both their hands.

Above them, Chloe had written:

*MY FAMILY IS HOME.*

Adrian crouched beside her.

“It's beautiful.””

“Do you think Grandma can see it?””

He looked toward the sky.

“I hope so, sweetheart.””

Chloe considered the drawing.

“Do you think she knew you would find Mommy?””

Adrian swallowed.

“I think she hoped someone would.””

Chloe nodded, apparently satisfied.

Then she pointed toward the flowerbeds.

“Can we plant roses there?””

Adrian glanced at Serena.

For a moment, neither spoke.

The roses had once hidden the woman he loved. They had concealed a crime, transformed a wedding into a nightmare, and forced him to question everything he believed about his family.

But flowers did not choose what people did with them.

“Yes,” Adrian said finally.

“We can plant roses.””

Chloe smiled.

“White ones?””

Serena reached for Adrian's hand.

“Maybe some red ones, too.””

That spring, they planted both.

They planted them along the garden wall, where the morning sunlight reached the soil first. Chloe insisted on watering them herself, even when the watering can was too heavy and the earth splashed onto her shoes.

Adrian watched her work and thought about the years they had lost.

He could not return those years to Serena. He could not erase the nights Chloe had cried for a mother she believed was gone. He could not undo his own failure to question the comforting explanations his father had offered.

But he could choose what happened next.

He could raise his daughter to ask difficult questions.

He could build a company that did not require silence to survive.

He could love Serena without pretending that love alone would heal every wound.

And he could tell the truth about the people who had hurt them, even when that truth damaged the family name he had once believed he must protect at any cost.

One evening, as the sun sank behind the trees, Serena joined him beside the roses.

“Do you ever think about what would have happened if Chloe hadn't heard me?”” she asked.

Adrian looked at the white flowers moving gently in the breeze.

“Every day.””

“Would you have found me?””

He took her hand.

“I don't know.””

The honesty hurt, but he would not replace it with another comforting lie.

Serena leaned against him.

“Neither do I.””

They stood quietly for a moment.

Then Adrian turned toward the house, where Chloe was calling them to dinner.

Before following her, Serena looked back at the roses.

“They were beautiful that day,” she said.

Adrian knew which day she meant.

“The wedding?””

She nodded.

“And I thought beauty meant something was safe.””

He squeezed her hand.

“Not anymore.””

“No,” Serena agreed.

“Now I know safety is what people do when nobody is watching.””

Together, they walked back toward the lighted windows.

Behind them, the roses moved in the evening wind, no longer concealing anything.

And for the first time in thirteen years, the Bennett family had something more valuable than wealth, status, or a spotless reputation.

May you like

They had the truth.

And this time, nobody would be allowed to bury it.
