Chapter 1: The Hand Behind the Altar

“Daddy, there’s a woman hiding behind the flowers.””

Ten-year-old Chloe Bennett whispered the words just as her father was about to marry the woman he believed would make their broken family whole again.

At first, Adrian Bennett barely heard her over the orchestra, the applause, and the gentle rustling of expensive silk dresses inside the grand ballroom of his family's estate. Then Chloe tugged harder on his sleeve, her small fingers trembling.

“Daddy,” she repeated, pointing toward the towering wall of white roses behind the altar.

“Someone’s crying in there.””

Adrian followed her gaze.

A second later, something moved behind the flowers.

Then a pale hand pushed through the roses.

The music stopped.

Three hundred wedding guests turned toward the altar as a woman’s fingers clawed desperately at the decorative wall. White petals scattered across the marble floor. Someone screamed. A champagne glass shattered.

And Vanessa Whitmore, Adrian's beautiful bride, went completely white.

“Get away from that wall!”” Vanessa shouted.

Her voice was so sharp that Chloe stumbled backward.

Adrian immediately stepped between his daughter and the bride.

“Vanessa, what is going on?””

“Nothing!”” Vanessa snapped, grabbing his arm.

“It's part of the decorations. One of the staff members must have gotten trapped back there.””

“Then why are you screaming at my daughter?””

Vanessa released him and forced a laugh that sounded painfully unnatural.

“I’m nervous, Adrian. This is our wedding day.””

Behind them, the roses shook again.

A weak voice emerged from the darkness.

“Please…”

Adrian's expression changed.

He was a billionaire real estate developer, a man who had negotiated million-dollar contracts without raising his voice. Yet the sound coming from behind that wall made something cold settle in his stomach.

“Security!”” he called.

Before anyone could respond, Chloe darted toward the flowers.

“Chloe, stop!”” Adrian shouted.

But his daughter was already pulling at the roses.

“Someone needs help!””

Adrian rushed forward and tore away a section of the floral arrangement. Beneath the flowers was a narrow opening concealed by a movable decorative panel. The space behind it was barely wide enough for a person to sit.

Inside, a woman was curled against the wall.

Her dark hair was tangled. Her pale face was streaked with dirt, and her wrists bore angry red marks. Her wedding dress, once perhaps beautiful, hung in torn layers around her thin frame.

She looked up at Adrian.

For one suspended moment, neither of them moved.

Then her lips parted.

“Adrian?””

His heart seemed to stop.

He knew that voice.

He had heard it in his dreams for seven years.

“Serena?””

The woman began to cry.

Serena Bennett was his first wife, the mother of Chloe, and the woman he had believed was dead.

Seven years earlier, her car had been found wrecked near a mountain road. The police had recovered blood from the driver's seat, a damaged wedding ring from the roadside, and enough circumstantial evidence to declare that Serena had almost certainly died in the crash.

Her body had never been found.

But Adrian had buried her anyway.

He had buried her in his heart, too, as much as a man could bury someone whose last words to him had been, I'll be home before dinner.

Now she was reaching toward him from behind a wall of roses.

“Oh my God,” Vanessa whispered.

Adrian slowly turned his head.

Vanessa stood several feet away, one hand pressed to her mouth. Her other hand gripped the stem of her bridal bouquet so tightly that the white roses bent beneath her fingers.

“You knew?”” Adrian asked.

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“No! Adrian, I swear, I have no idea who she is.””

Serena suddenly grabbed Adrian's wrist.

“Don't let her take me back.””

Her grip was weak, but her terror was unmistakable.

Chloe knelt beside her mother.

“Mommy?””

Serena stared at the little girl as if she were seeing a ghost.

“Chloe?””

The child burst into tears.

“You came back! Daddy said you weren't coming back!””

Serena reached for her daughter, but when Chloe leaned closer, the older woman flinched at the sound of a security guard's footsteps.

“Please don't lock me up again,” Serena begged.

“Please. I won't tell anyone. Just don't put me back in that room.””

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Adrian helped Serena out of the hidden compartment and wrapped his tuxedo jacket around her shoulders. She weighed almost nothing.

“Who did this to you?”” he asked.

Serena's gaze flickered toward Vanessa.

The bride immediately stepped forward.

“Adrian, listen to me. This woman is clearly traumatized. She may be confused. We need a doctor, not a public spectacle.””

“Then why does she know my name?””

“Because everyone knows your name!””

“Why does she know Chloe's?””

Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it.

Serena struggled to stand. Adrian steadied her, and she clung to his sleeve.

“She told me you were dead,” Serena whispered.

Adrian stared at her.

“Who told you?””

“Vanessa.””

A collective gasp rolled through the ballroom.

Vanessa's face twisted with indignation.

“That is a lie! This woman has been missing for seven years. How could I possibly have kept her prisoner?””

Serena looked directly at her.

“Because you didn't do it alone.””

Adrian felt the room tilt beneath his feet.

“Who helped her?””

Serena's lips trembled.

She glanced past the altar, toward the front row where Adrian's father, Richard Bennett, sat in an immaculate charcoal suit.

Richard was seventy-two, silver-haired, and respected throughout the city. He had raised Adrian after his mother died, taught him how to build an empire, and helped him survive the years following Serena's disappearance.

When Serena saw him, she made a strangled sound.

Richard rose slowly.

“Adrian,” he said, his voice calm enough to be insulting, “this is a private family matter. Have security escort this woman somewhere quiet before she causes any more distress.””

Serena shrank behind Adrian.

“No,” she whispered.

Richard's eyes narrowed.

Adrian noticed it.

His father had never looked at Serena with hatred before. He had barely looked at her at all during their marriage, dismissing her as too emotional and too fragile for the Bennett family.

But this was different.

Richard looked at her as if he had just seen something he had spent seven years trying to bury.

“Father,” Adrian said slowly, “why does Serena look terrified of you?””

Richard adjusted his cuff.

“Because she is clearly unwell.””

“That's not an answer.””

“Think carefully before you turn an unfortunate situation into a family scandal.””

Adrian had heard that tone before. It was the tone Richard used whenever he wanted someone to remember who controlled the money, the lawyers, and the doors through which powerful people entered.

But Adrian was no longer a boy.

He turned toward the head of security.

“Lock down the estate. Nobody leaves until we understand what happened here.””

Vanessa stepped forward, tears suddenly spilling down her cheeks.

“You can't do this to me on our wedding day.””

Adrian looked at the diamond ring on her finger.

Only an hour earlier, he had slipped it onto her hand while Chloe scattered rose petals along the aisle.

Now those same petals lay beneath Serena's bare feet.

“Our wedding is over,” he said.

Vanessa's tears stopped.

For one second, the mask fell completely.

Beneath the wounded bride's expression was something cold, calculating, and furious.

Then she leaned close enough for Adrian alone to hear her.

“You should have let the police declare her dead.””

Before he could respond, Serena gripped his arm so hard that her fingernails dug into his skin.

“Adrian,” she whispered, “there's something you need to know about the night I disappeared.””

She looked toward Richard.

May you like

“Your father was the last person I saw before I woke up underground.””

And for the first time in his life, Adrian wondered whether the man who had raised him had also helped destroy his family.
