Chapter 4: The Room at the End of the Hall

Adrian reached Chloe's bedroom in less than a minute.

He threw open the door so hard that it struck the wall.

“Chloe!””

The room was empty.

Her pink cardigan lay across the bed. A half-finished drawing sat on the desk, showing three figures holding hands beneath a yellow sun. On the windowsill, a small porcelain horse had been knocked onto its side.

But Chloe was gone.

Adrian's blood turned cold.

“Where is my daughter?””

Daniel Reeves appeared behind him, breathing hard.

“The cameras show your father entering the east wing three minutes ago. He went into this room, then the feed cut out.””

“Find him!””

“We're checking every exit.””

“Check them faster!””

Adrian swept his gaze across the room. The balcony doors were locked from the inside. The windows were too narrow for an adult to climb through. There was nowhere a ten-year-old girl could have gone without leaving a trace.

Then he noticed the wardrobe.

Its door stood slightly open.

Adrian approached slowly.

“Chloe?”” he called.

“Sweetheart, it's Daddy. You can come out.””

A faint sound came from inside.

“Daddy?””

He yanked the door open.

Chloe was crouched among the hanging dresses, clutching her stuffed rabbit against her chest. Tears streaked her cheeks.

Adrian dropped to his knees and pulled her into his arms.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

“Grandpa told me not to tell you.””

Adrian went still.

“What did Grandpa tell you?””

Chloe sniffed and wiped her nose against his shirt.

“He said Mommy was going to disappear again. He said if I wanted her to stay, I had to come with him.””

Adrian held her tighter.

“Did he touch you?””

“No. He just took my hand. Then I heard Mommy calling for me, and I ran back here.””

“Where is he now?””

Chloe shook her head.

“He said he had something important to do. Before he left, he told me that you wouldn't believe me because you always believed him.””

The words cut deeper than Adrian expected.

For years, Richard had been the authority in their household. He had decided which doctors Chloe saw, which schools she attended, and how Adrian should handle Serena's disappearance. Even after Serena was declared dead, Richard had insisted that Chloe needed structure, not endless questions about a mother she would never see again.

Adrian had mistaken control for protection.

He kissed Chloe's forehead.

“You did the right thing, sweetheart. You hear me? You did exactly the right thing.””

“Are you going to let Grandpa take Mommy away?””

“No.””

His answer came without hesitation.

“Not ever again.””

A sharp knock interrupted them.

Serena stood in the doorway, supported by a nurse. She had heard the commotion and refused to remain in the study.

When Chloe saw her, she scrambled out of Adrian's arms and ran to her mother.

Serena dropped to her knees and caught her daughter.

“I'm here,” she whispered.

“I'm right here.””

“Grandpa said you were bad,” Chloe sobbed.

“He said you left us because you didn't love us anymore.””

Serena closed her eyes.

“Oh, baby. No.””

She kissed Chloe's hair again and again.

“I never left you. Not for one second.””

Adrian watched them, his chest aching with a mixture of relief and shame.

Then Daniel's voice came through his radio.

“Sir, we found your father.””

“Where?””

“West garage. He's attempting to leave the property.””

Adrian handed Chloe to the nurse.

“Stay with your mother. Lock the door, and don't open it for anyone except me or Daniel.””

Chloe caught his hand.

“Daddy, please don't let him hurt you.””

Adrian crouched in front of her.

“He won't.””

But when he reached the garage, Richard was already standing beside his black Mercedes, speaking calmly to two security officers.

He looked almost offended by their presence.

“Move aside,” Richard ordered.

“I have a meeting with my attorneys.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“I'm afraid you can't leave, sir.””

Richard stared at him.

“You work for my son because I approved your appointment.””

“I work for Mr. Adrian Bennett.””

“Then remember who built the company that pays your salary.””

Adrian walked into the garage.

“Enough, Father.””

Richard turned.

For a moment, his expression softened into the familiar look of a disappointed parent.

“Adrian. Thank God. Your security team has lost all sense of proportion.””

“You went into Chloe's bedroom.””

“I checked on my granddaughter.””

“You frightened her into hiding.””

Richard sighed as if Adrian were being unreasonable.

“She is a child. She doesn't understand what's happening. Neither do you, apparently.””

Adrian approached until they stood only a few feet apart.

“Seven years ago, you helped make Serena disappear.””

Richard's face remained composed.

“Be careful what you accuse me of.””

“I saw the footage. I found the payment records. I found Vanessa's letter.””

At Vanessa's name, Richard's expression changed almost imperceptibly.

“You've been rummaging through confidential family records,” he said.

“You have no idea what you've uncovered.””

“Then explain it.””

Richard looked at the security officers.

“Leave us.””

Nobody moved.

Adrian folded his arms.

“Whatever you have to say, you can say in front of them.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“Your mother would be ashamed of you.””

Adrian felt the old instinct to retreat, to apologize, to become the son who needed his father's approval.

He resisted it.

“My mother is not part of this conversation.””

“She would have understood the sacrifices required to protect this family.””

“Did protecting the family require locking my wife underground?””

Richard's eyes hardened.

“Your wife was a threat.””

The words hung in the garage.

Adrian stared at him.

Richard seemed to realize what he had said. He straightened his jacket and tried to recover his composure.

“I meant that Serena was emotionally unstable. She threatened to destroy everything we had built.””

“She was your son's wife.””

“She was a woman who couldn't understand the world she had married into.””

“And Vanessa?””

Richard's silence lasted one second too long.

Adrian stepped closer.

“What did she promise you?””

“Nothing.””

“Then why did you help her?””

Richard looked toward the garage doors.

“You're making a mistake. Whatever you think you saw, you don't understand the full picture.””

“Give me the full picture.””

Richard's face twisted with frustration.

“You think love is enough to run an empire? You think you can hand everything to a woman who knows nothing about our business and expect the world to respect you?””

Adrian stared at him.

“Is that what this is about? Serena wouldn't let you control me?””

“This is about survival!””

Richard's voice thundered through the garage.

Then, suddenly, he lowered it.

“You have no idea how many people depend on this family. How many livelihoods, how many investments, how many reputations. Your sentimental decisions threatened all of it.””

“And Vanessa offered to help you save it?””

Richard said nothing.

Adrian turned to Daniel.

“Take him to the library. Call the police and report everything we've found. Tell them we have evidence of unlawful confinement, fraud, and a possible kidnapping.””

Richard's face reddened.

“You wouldn't dare.””

“I would.””

“You're destroying your own father!””

Adrian stopped at the garage entrance.

“No, Father. I'm finally stopping you from destroying everyone else.””

Security escorted Richard away.

For the first time in his life, Adrian watched his father leave without following him.

But his relief lasted only until Daniel approached with another tablet.

“Sir, there's a problem with the footage from the lower level.””

“What now?””

“The system recorded another person entering the underground room last night. We identified the vehicle, but the face is unclear.””

“Who was it?””

Daniel enlarged the image.

A woman stepped out of the car, carrying a leather document case.

She wore a long black coat.

The timestamp read 10:17 p.m.

Adrian recognized the shape of her face, the way she carried her shoulders, and the distinctive diamond bracelet on her left wrist.

It was Vanessa.

But she wasn't alone.

A second figure emerged from the passenger side.

And when Daniel enhanced the image, Adrian saw the face of the man who had supposedly been dead for twelve years.
