Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Adrian stared at the screen until the image blurred.

Thomas Whitaker had vanished twelve years earlier after a boating accident off the coast of Maine. His empty boat had been found drifting near the rocks, and although no body was recovered, the authorities eventually presumed him dead.

Richard had handled the arrangements.

Richard had delivered the news to the family.

Richard had stood beside Adrian at the memorial service and assured him that the sea sometimes took what it was owed.

Now Thomas was walking into a hidden room beneath Bennett House.

Alive.

“Run the footage again,” Adrian ordered.

Daniel replayed it.

Vanessa stepped out of the car first. Thomas followed, carrying a black bag. They exchanged a few words near the garage entrance, but the microphone captured nothing intelligible.

Then Vanessa placed a hand on Thomas's shoulder.

He leaned toward her and kissed her cheek.

Adrian felt physically sick.

“How long has he been here?””

“We don't know,” Daniel replied.

“The camera system has several gaps. But the vehicle appears to have been registered under a company associated with the Bennett Foundation.””

“The foundation Vanessa was supposed to control after the wedding.””

“Yes, sir.””

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

The wedding had never been merely a celebration. It had been a transfer of power disguised as romance.

He had planned to give Vanessa access to the family trusts, believing she wanted to build a future with him and help support Chloe. His father had encouraged the arrangement, describing Vanessa as intelligent, loyal, and capable of handling the foundation's complicated affairs.

Meanwhile, Serena had been held captive beneath the estate.

The timing could not be a coincidence.

“Find Thomas,” Adrian said.

“We've already searched the property. He's not here.””

“Then find the car.””

Daniel hesitated.

“There's another issue. The vehicle is registered to a company called Whitaker Holdings. Its directors include Vanessa, your father, and a man listed as Thomas Whitaker.””

Adrian let out a bitter laugh.

“They resurrected a dead man on paper before they resurrected him in person.””

He walked toward the study.

Serena was sitting beside the fireplace, with Chloe asleep against her shoulder. A blanket covered them both. The nurse had left a tray of food on the table, most of it untouched.

Serena looked up as he entered.

“What happened?””

Adrian pulled a chair close.

“Someone else was involved in your disappearance. Someone we believed was dead.””

Her face tightened.

“Who?””

“My uncle Thomas.””

For several seconds, Serena did not respond.

Then she whispered, “The man who came to the room.””

Adrian leaned forward.

“You saw him?””

“Not clearly. They kept the lights low, and I was usually blindfolded when they moved me. But I heard his voice. He called Richard ‘sir’ at first, then Richard told him to stop pretending they were strangers.””

Adrian rubbed his forehead.

“Did he ever speak to you?””

“Once.””

“What did he say?””

Serena glanced toward Chloe, making sure she remained asleep.

“He asked me why I couldn't simply accept what had happened. He said my disappearance was necessary because you were too weak to make the right decisions.””

Adrian's hands curled into fists.

“Did he hurt you?””

“He didn't have to. He made it clear that he was willing to.””

Serena looked toward the fire.

“Adrian, there was something else. On the last night before they moved me, I heard him arguing with Vanessa.””

“What about?””

“The money. He said she'd promised him a larger share once you signed the documents. She told him he would get nothing if he continued making mistakes.””

Adrian stood abruptly.

“That's enough.””

“Adrian—”

“No. You've been through enough.””

He paced to the window and called Daniel.

“I want every financial record connected to Whitaker Holdings. Bank transfers, property purchases, offshore accounts, everything. Get our forensic accountants on it immediately.””

“Understood.””

“And locate Thomas before he leaves the country.””

“I'll do my best.””

Adrian ended the call.

Behind him, Serena spoke softly.

“You look like your father when you're angry.””

The observation made him stop.

He turned.

“I never wanted to become him.””

“You aren't him.””

“You don't know that anymore.””

Serena looked at him for a long moment.

“I know the man who stayed awake beside me when Chloe was born. I know the man who learned how to braid hair because I was too sick to get out of bed. I know the man who used to read me terrible poetry because he thought it made him romantic.””

Despite herself, she smiled faintly.

“You were terrible at poetry.””

“I was told I had potential.””

“You had enthusiasm.””

For a moment, the room felt almost like home.

Then Serena's smile faded.

“But I also know the man who let your father decide when to stop searching for me.””

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“I should never have stopped.””

“No,” she said gently.

“You shouldn't have.””

He accepted the answer without defending himself.

“I can't undo those seven years. But I can make sure he never hurts you again.””

Serena reached across the table and touched his hand.

“Then don't become cruel just because you've discovered what cruelty looks like.””

Before Adrian could answer, his phone rang.

The caller ID displayed an unfamiliar number.

He answered.

“Adrian Bennett.””

A man's voice came through the speaker.

“You've been busy.””

Adrian recognized the voice from the recordings.

Thomas.

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere your father can't reach me.””

“Then why are you calling?””

A short laugh.

“Because you're making a terrible mistake. Serena was never supposed to be found.””

“Where is Vanessa?””

“She has more sense than you think.””

“If you come near my daughter—”

“Your daughter?”” Thomas interrupted.

“You should be asking why your father chose to keep Serena alive rather than let her disappear permanently.””

Adrian's heart hammered.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you're asking the wrong questions. Richard didn't start this because he hated Serena. He started it because Serena discovered something that could destroy the entire Bennett family.””

“What did she discover?””

Thomas went silent.

Then he said, “Ask her what happened the week before the accident.””

The call ended.

Adrian stared at his phone.

Serena had heard every word.

When he looked up, she was trembling.

“What happened the week before the accident?”” he asked.

Serena closed her eyes.

“I found financial records that didn't make sense. Money was disappearing from the foundation, and several properties were being transferred to companies that didn't exist.””

“Did you tell Richard?””

“I confronted him. He said I had misunderstood the documents. Then I told him I would speak to you.””

Adrian remembered that week. Serena had been distracted, frequently making calls from the garden and asking him strange questions about the foundation.

He had assumed she was planning a surprise for his birthday.

“What happened next?””

“She told me she had proof that your father was using the company to move money through false charities. She said he was stealing from the family.””

Adrian felt the floor shift beneath him.

“And Thomas?””

“He was the one who helped her trace the payments.””

That made no sense.

Thomas had supposedly been dead for years before Serena disappeared. But the financial records could have been from a much earlier period, and his apparent death might have been part of the same scheme.

“Did Thomas tell you what he found?””

Serena nodded.

“He said the money wasn't the worst part. He said your father was using the foundation to pay people who had done terrible things, then hiding those payments as charitable expenses.””

Adrian sat slowly.

“Did you see the records?””

“I did.””

“Where are they?””

Serena stared at him.

“I hid them before they took me.””

“Where?””

Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

Then she looked at the portrait above the fireplace.

It was a painting of Adrian's mother, Eleanor Bennett, commissioned shortly before her death.

“Your mother helped me,” Serena whispered.

Adrian followed her gaze.

“My mother died when I was seventeen.””

“I know.””

“She never met you. She died before we married.””

Serena shook her head.

“Not the records. The key.””

She stood unsteadily and approached the portrait.

Behind the frame, concealed against the wall, was a narrow wooden compartment.

Adrian had never noticed it.

Serena reached inside and withdrew a small brass key attached to a faded blue ribbon.

“I took it from your mother's jewelry box the night I found the transfers,” she said.

“She had told me to use it only if something happened to her.””

Adrian stared at the key.

His mother had died after a sudden illness that the family had always described as an aggressive infection.

He had never questioned the explanation.

Now Serena was holding a key his mother had hidden, and his uncle was claiming that his father's crimes went back much further than seven years.

“What does it open?”” Adrian asked.

May you like

Serena looked at him with haunted eyes.

“The room where your mother kept the truth about her death.””
