Chapter 7: The Price of the Truth

For three seconds, Adrian Bennett could not move.

On the security monitor, the black SUV disappeared beyond the estate gates. Serena's face flashed behind the rain-streaked window, her mouth forming a word he could not hear.

Then the screen went dark.

“Lock every exit!”” Adrian shouted.

“Get me the vehicle's last known location!””

Daniel Reeves was already speaking into his radio.

“Units to the north road. Black SUV, partial registration available. Suspected abduction. Two occupants, including Thomas Whitaker.””

Adrian grabbed his coat.

“I'm going after them.””

“Sir, wait.”” Daniel caught his arm.

“We don't know whether they have weapons. We need police support.””

“They have my wife!””

“And if you drive into an ambush, your daughter loses both parents.””

The words stopped Adrian cold.

Behind him, Chloe stood on the staircase, holding her stuffed rabbit. She had heard enough to understand that something terrible had happened.

“Daddy?”” she whispered.

“Where's Mommy?””

Adrian turned.

He wanted to lie. He wanted to tell her that Serena had gone to the hospital, that everything was fine, that he would bring her back before dinner.

But his daughter had already spent seven years living inside a lie.

“Someone took Mommy,” he said, kneeling before her.

“I'm going to bring her home.””

Chloe's chin trembled.

“Grandpa said she would disappear again.””

Adrian felt those words like a knife.

“Grandpa was wrong about a lot of things, sweetheart. But I won't let anyone tell you that your mother chose to leave you. She never did.””

Chloe threw her arms around his neck.

“Bring her back.””

“I promise I'll do everything I can.””

He kissed her forehead, then handed her to Daniel's deputy.

“Keep Chloe somewhere secure. Nobody gets near her without your approval.””

Daniel nodded.

“And Adrian,” he added quietly, “the police have confirmed something. The SUV belongs to Whitaker Holdings. It was purchased six months ago under a false identity.””

“Where is Thomas taking her?””

“We're tracing the vehicle.””

Adrian's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

“Where is Serena?””

Thomas laughed softly.

“Straight to business. You always were impatient, Adrian.””

“If you've hurt her—”

“She's alive. For now.””

Adrian clenched his teeth.

“What do you want?””

“The notebook. The original documents. Everything your wife found.””

“You mean the evidence that proves you and my father imprisoned her?””

“I mean the evidence that could destroy the Bennett family.””

“You destroyed it yourself.””

Thomas sighed.

“You still think this is about money. That's why you'll never understand what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

“Bring the notebook to the abandoned Whitaker textile mill outside town. Come alone. If I see police, you'll receive Serena in pieces.””

The call ended.

Adrian stood motionless, staring at his phone.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You're not going alone.””

“He specifically demanded it.””

“Which means he expects you to come without backup.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Can you track the call?””

“Already trying.””

“Then do it. Quietly.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Sir, I need to tell you something else. We found a second vehicle registered to Whitaker Holdings. It's been parked near the textile mill for three days.””

Adrian nodded slowly.

“Then that's where we're going.””

He returned to the study, retrieved the leather notebook, and placed it inside his coat.

Before leaving, he looked at the photograph of his mother lying on the desk.

For thirteen years, he had believed her death was a tragedy no one could have prevented.

Now he wondered whether he had spent his entire adult life protecting the people responsible for it.

The abandoned textile mill stood at the edge of an industrial district, its broken windows reflecting the pale afternoon sky. Rusted machinery sat behind chain-link fencing. Weeds pushed through cracks in the concrete.

Adrian parked outside the main entrance.

His phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel appeared.

We have a team in position. Keep your phone on. Do not enter any secondary rooms alone.

Adrian slipped the phone into his pocket.

He walked through the entrance.

“Thomas!””

His voice echoed through the empty building.

A metal door slammed somewhere in the darkness.

Then Serena appeared on a platform above him.

Her hands were tied in front of her. Her face was bruised, but she was standing.

“Adrian!”” she shouted.

He started toward the stairs.

Thomas stepped from behind a rusted machine and raised a pistol.

“Stop right there.””

Adrian froze.

Thomas wore an expensive suit beneath his open coat. He looked older than the man in the photographs, but unmistakably alive.

“Let her go,” Adrian said.

“Put the notebook on the floor.””

“First, Serena walks down those stairs.””

Thomas smiled without warmth.

“You're still trying to negotiate.””

“I'm trying to give you a chance to leave here alive.””

Thomas laughed.

“Your father used to say the same thing when we were younger. He always thought he could buy his way out of every problem.””

“Then why did you help him?””

“Because your mother was going to destroy us.””

Adrian stared at him.

“What did you do to my mother?””

Thomas's expression tightened.

“Eleanor was a sentimental fool. She thought the law would protect her after she discovered what Richard had been doing.””

“What happened to her?””

Thomas looked up at Serena.

“Tell him.””

Serena shook her head.

“Tell him yourself.””

Thomas pressed the gun closer to Adrian's chest.

“Your mother discovered that Richard had been siphoning money from the foundation for years. She threatened to expose him. I arranged for the records to disappear, but she had copies.””

“And then she died.””

“An unfortunate medical emergency.””

Adrian's voice dropped.

“Was it?””

Thomas said nothing.

Adrian took one slow step forward.

“You and Richard have spent thirteen years making people disappear, haven't you?””

“People disappear every day, Adrian. The world only cares when the missing person is rich enough to make the newspapers.””

Serena suddenly kicked the metal railing beside her.

The sharp clang distracted Thomas for a fraction of a second.

Adrian lunged.

The gun fired.

The sound thundered through the mill.

Pain tore across Adrian's upper arm as he slammed into Thomas. They crashed against a workbench, sending tools scattering across the concrete.

Thomas struck Adrian across the face.

“You stupid bastard!””

Adrian drove him backward.

“You took my wife!””

Thomas swung again, catching Adrian's cheek.

“And your father let me!””

The words came out in a furious scream.

Adrian stopped for half a heartbeat.

That was enough for Thomas to wrench free and reach for the gun.

Then Serena hurled herself down the final steps and struck Thomas's wrist with the heavy metal chain that had bound her hands.

The weapon skidded across the floor.

Daniel and two officers burst through the entrance.

“Police! Hands where we can see them!””

Thomas tried to run, but Daniel tackled him against the workbench. Officers forced his hands behind his back and secured the cuffs.

Adrian staggered toward Serena.

She caught him before he fell.

“You're bleeding,” she whispered.

“So are you.””

“I'm fine.””

“You're a terrible liar.””

She gave a shaky laugh that turned into a sob.

He held her against him while the officers searched the mill.

For one precious moment, he thought the nightmare might finally be over.

Then Daniel approached, carrying a mobile phone recovered from Thomas's coat.

“Sir, you need to hear this.””

The phone contained a recording scheduled to play automatically when someone entered a particular code.

Daniel pressed the screen.

Richard's voice filled the abandoned mill.

“If Adrian has found the notebook, the original files must be destroyed. Thomas, make certain Serena never reaches the police. Vanessa will handle the trust transfer.””

A second voice followed.

Vanessa.

“And if Thomas fails?””

Richard answered without hesitation.

“Then you do what I taught you to do seven years ago.””

The recording ended.

Adrian stared at the phone.

Thomas, now kneeling between two officers, began to smile.

“You think you've won,” he said.

“You haven't even reached the worst part.””

Adrian stepped toward him.

“What worst part?””

Thomas lifted his head.

“The woman who helped your father bury the truth about Eleanor Bennett wasn't Vanessa.””

He paused, watching Adrian's expression.

“It was the doctor who signed your mother's death certificate.””

Daniel's radio crackled.

A voice reported that Dr. Samuel Price had been found unconscious in his home.

Beside him lay an empty medicine bottle and a handwritten note addressed to Adrian.

May you like

The note contained only one sentence.

Your mother didn't die of an illness.
